Apple TV 4K 3rd generation eARC sound issues, no problems with Apple TV 4K 2nd generation

I have the Apple TV 4K 3rd generation with ethernet and 128 GB. I got a new tv and sound bar, LG 65OLED3CAUA and Sonos Arc. All of my devices work fine except for the Apple TV 3rd generation. Initially the Apple TV alone with the Sonos Arc works without problem but as soon as I add another device and switch HDMI input and then switch back to the Apple TV only content with Dolby Atmos plays but Dolby 5.1 and HD content have no sound. It doesn't matter what app or content. I also have an Apple TV 4K 2nd generation, 64 GB with ethernet and no problems. To get Dolby Atmos with Sonos Arc I must have eARC enabled on the LG TV and I can't turn off CEC because it immediately switches on again.

Here is a link to the Sonos community with all of the things I have tried:

For now I have switched the Apple TV 2nd gen to my new LG TV and Sonos Arc. It is disappointing that I can't use the Apple TV 4K 3rd generation. I'm hoping someone has figured this out.

Thanks.

It broke with TVOS 17.0. Previous to 17.0, the Apple TV 3rd gen could distinguish between Dolby, 2 channel and 5.1 channel audio via the 'Auto' setting. Now - just as you said, if you want to listen to Atmos or Dolby 2 channel audio - use Auto. If 5.1 (the majority of TV programming), you have to force the audio to 'Change Format - 5.1 audio' in the audio settings. It will not work otherwise. Yep - I brought this up to Apple in September. I have heard no acknowledgement of it as an issue. It showed up in early TVOS 17.0 betas prior to it being released.

I only get sound from Apple TV 3rd when the content is in Dolby Atmos. For instance if the Netflix movie is Dolby Atmos I get sound. If it is in some other sound format, no sound. With the Apple TV 2nd all sound formats play just fine and I get Dolby Atmos when I am supposed and the other formats too. It's just weird. Do you think the implementation of the HomePod speakers with eARC could be causing the problem? I don't even use the homepod mini for a tv speaker. Both of my devices are Apple TV 4K. One is the latest model and one is the previous model. All are updated with the latest version of TVOs.

I have now spent about an hour each on the phone with Sonos support, Apple support, and LG support and many hours online trying to find a solution but no luck. One person pointed out that if you go to LG settings in the support section and turn off the privacy agreement, the Applet TV will work temporarily until you switch to another HDMI input and then back to Apple TV. LG support had me unplug the LG TV and hold the power button for 60 seconds. When I power on the LG TV the Apple TV will work again until I switch to another HDMI input and then back to the Apple TV. For now I am using WebOS apps built into the LG TV and hoping one of the three companies might issue a software update to correct the problem. Again this only happens with the Apple TV 4K 3rd generation but not the 2nd generation and only if you want to use eARC. (the eARC and the improved sound was a big reason I got new equipment.

Thanks for the reply. I have only had my setup for a couple of months. I had the problems with tvOS 16 and 17. As I mentioned the 2nd generation Apple TV 4K works fine only the 3rd generation has the problem. I also discovered your trick but switching the settings depending on content is inconvenient.

I got a reply from Apple Support and I am supposed to call. I also got a reply from Sonos support and they want me to call. I hope to get that done later this week. If I find a solution, I will post it here.

I had the follow up with Apple Support. They recommended setting my LG C3 to Auto instead of passthrough. I had already tried that. Apple feels there is a problem with the Sonos Arc. I spent 2 1/2 hours with Sonos support. They collected log files with different settings and were going to speak to an engineer and then follow up with me. I will likely go back to my Apple TV 4K 2nd generation as it has no problems.

Same issue also here.

LG C3 with Apple TV 3rd gen, Fire Cube 3rd gen and Sonos Arc with Sub and Era 300s.

Connecting the Apple TV alone without the Fire Tv, and the 5.1 audio sources are playing fine.

As soon as I connect the Fire Tv, no audio anymore from the Apple TV. Only Atmos and stereo sources are working fine.

The only way to get the Apple TV 3rd gen to work properly is to shut-down the Fire TV.

Tried to reset everything. All HDMI cables certified 2.1. Tried also different of them.

Disconnected everything, power cycles on all the devices, waiting 30 minutes, reconnected: same problem.

Passthrough, Auto, tried all the audio settings from the C3.

Not really understanding why it’s not properly working.

Here's the facts from my POV. We have another person with my same exact problem, where 'Auto/Atmos' on Apple TV 3rd generation (wired) will product 5.1 audio only in the back right surround speaker. Everything else will be silent. Forcing the 5.1 through Apple instead of 'Auto/Atmos' - 5.1 and 2 channel audio works normally. If listening to Atmos content, set the 'Auto/Atmos' and it works there. This, to me, is clearly an Apple audio detection problem. When I first had the issue I searched the internet and found several beta TVOS17 people complaining about this issue with their Apple TV 3rd gen working with the Sonos Arc. Apple released the iffy code to the masses anyways.

And BTW, I had my Apple TV 3rd gen before TVOS 17 was released and the 'Auto/Atmos' worked fine with Atmos and 5.1 content - never had to force the change. Silly me for installing the latest Apple build right away. Apple - STEP UP AND FIX THIS!

LG sent a local technician out. He said there were no error codes showing on the LG TV when I was having the sound problem. I can reproduce the problem. With only the Apple TV and the Sonos Arc attached the Apple TV 3rd generation works fine. Adding a third device causes the problem and unplugging the third device brings the sound back. The technician didn't recommend replacing a circuit board since he couldn't find a problem. I am back using the Apple TV 2nd generation and I can have all of the HDMI ports connected. I still have 2 weeks to return the LG TV to Costco. I considered switching to a Sony but I really like the LG TV except for this problem and I am not sure that switching the TV would solve the issue.

I would not buy another TV either. This is an Apple problem. Again - previously working Auto/Atmos configuration before TVOS 17 came out. Wish I had not upgraded. None of the features are terribly useful compared to always having to toggle the audio from Auto/Atmos to Dolby 5.1. It's a nuisance. I have gone to using my Roku memory stick as it handles passthrough Atmos and 5.1 without any issue.

I will wait until TVOS 17.1 comes out, but I do not intend to use my AppleTV again until this is fixed, if ever.

Hi I’m having a very similar issue with my Apple TV 4K 3rd gen I’m on TVOS17.1 and I do get sound for 5.1 however it shows on my Sonos app as PCM 5.1 and every few seconds the audio will cut out however it does not happen when watching Dolby Atmos content having to manually switch the change format setting to on in the settings is frustrating has anyone else still got this issue or found a workaround/solution?

I called Apple on my September 26th submission of this issue. They said they were not aware of it and said I should have submitted it in a different way. They didn’t even react to the fact that there was a problem, but I didn’t follow the process. The person I spoke to on 9/26 said they would take care of it. They did not. It’s becoming Microsoft where they work hard to not speak to you directly or address your problems.

I read via straight google searches on the issue, Apple was aware of this issue in the 17.0 beta, but didn't seek to fix it before the release of 17.0. Now nearing 17.2 release and they still don't have fix? Merry Christmas from Apple. If I had left the ATV 4k 3rd gen pre-17.0, audio would have worked fine. Now will be trusting Apple updates less and less and researching them before applying...especially for the Apple TV. Like I said below, the Roku with pass-through Dolby Atmos/5.1 support works great for $25. :)

Same problem with the latest .2 b3ta but it does seem to have improved just a bit. Get no sound when watching Paramount Plus (unless I switch off (AUTO,ATMOS) to 5.1 only. Some app seem to be better though. It does seem to be somewhat intermittent. It worked in Paramount PLus as it is supposed to then after a day or 2 no sound again. Using eArc & a SONOS ARC soundbar on an LG g2. Didn't have any problems on my GEN 2 Apple TV just the new GEN 3. Moved the GEN 2 to the bedroom TV. My GEN3 is the ethernet version.
