I'm using a 2021 M1 iMac with Monterey. My wired USB-A mouse occasionally fails, which is a bother. Can't move the cursor, and it's possible that the cursor doesn't even show. What fixes it entirely is unplugging the mouse and plugging it back in. The mouse has been connected in various ways, through several different ports on different hubs, and the problem repeats, so the issue doesn't appear to be USB connectivity. Is this possibly a system issue, or should I understand that my mouse just needs replacement? That is, is this an understood failure mode for wired mouses?

You're the first to bring it up here, so no. Have you checked the cable or wiggled the cable at the port end to see if there's a hardware connection problem. The best solution would be an Apple Magic Mouse (B/T).

As I said, the mouse has been connected in several different ways, though several different ports. So the issue is clearly not a hardware connection problem. Why is a wireless mouse the best solution? Wired mice are SUPPOSED to work, and I dislike chasing batteries.

You can always test it on a different computer or test a different mouse on the same computer. I don't know that there are typical signs of mouse failure.

Yes, I have now switched mice with another machine, and will see what happens. Just curious if this behavior was a recognized failure mode.

The new Magic Mouse has rechargeable batteries. I recharge mine about once a month with its USB charging cable. The system its setup for it and has many customizations available in System settings.

OK, I've used a replacement wired mouse at the same location for about a week.NO PROBLEMS. Therefore, what I described IS a failure mode for wired mice. Good to know.
