My AirPods Pro (1st generation) make crackling, buzzing or static sounds

I have a pair of Airpod Pro (1st gen) that has the know issue with one of the airpods making a horrible crackling or buzzing sound making them un-usable. This can happen to one or both sides. My set has the problem with the right Airpod. I read about the recall program for this problem where they would be fixed or replaced at no charge. That makes a lot sense since it is a manufacturing defect and I paid $249 for these and I was happy to hear it. I have taken perfect care on these and the problem was not caused by misuse. So I went on the Apple website and it asked me to make an appointment with the Apple Genius bar to begin the process. When they checked them out I was told that in fact the right unit failed and then told me that the left one failed too. Then he explained that the replace/repair program is for AIrPods that were manufactured before October 2020. I bought these from Kohls in December of 2020 so clearly mine must fall under this replacement program with this widely known issue. Well I was told that mine were manufactured in October of 2020 and don't qualify and the replacement program!!! What?!!! Obviously these are part of the units that have the problem! He told me I would have to pay to replace both failed units and it would cost me $180!!!! What?!!! I asked if I can replace just one and he said NO! They both failed and that I had to pay for both!! Then he told me that he would not recommend I do that because I can purchase a new pair of 2nd generation on Amazon for $190 to $200 if I looked for sales and that the 2nd gen are much better!! What?!! This is not right or fair! How was this date determined? ... Randomly? or based on how many units the company was willing to replace?? Looking into this community and this issue I am reading that others with units made in 2021 also have the same problem and they are not covered either!! So if mine were made literally a few weeks earlier they would have been covered by the replacement program that Apple created to cover their KNOWN and ADMITTED manufacturing defect issue. That's crazy! My AirPods are un-suable and the only solution is buy new ones!!!??? Before writing this I called customer service and was escalated to a "Senior" support specialist after I explained my issue. She basically told me the same thing that the "genius" did in the Apple store and there is nothing she can do. When I said it was unacceptable and I want to talk to someone above her she said the only thing I can do is write a letter and gave me the Apple corporate headquarters address in Cupertino!!!! WHAT?!!!! I have to snail mail a paper letter and then pray someone reads it and gets back to me some time in the distant future in 2023 when digital communication to anywhere in the world is common place for just about the entire civilized world???!! LMAO ... That is completely insane and completely irresponsible for a company like Apple to not deal with their own defect. I have been an Apple customer since 1984!!!! I bought a Mac Plus for $2500 and I have been a loyal customer ever since owning almost every Macintosh model ever made and even worked for an Authorized dealer in the 90's. For one of the largest company's in the world to not make sure EVER SINGLE PERSON who spent $249 for a pair of defective AirPod Pros get their units replaced at no cost to them is completely UNACCEPTABLE! Especially people like me who have a pair that was clearly part of that batch of defective units. So I will start here on the Apple website and hope someone in the company with some sort of position of authority will see this or it will be brought to their attention and a brand new pair be sent to me with an apology for selling me a defective pair of premium ear buds. If that doesn't happen soon I will spread this message across social media and anywhere and everywhere I can until this issue is addressed and those of us with these broken AirPods are compensated. Thanks for you attention to this issue!

Yep, exact same thing happened to me! Brought them in and was told verbatim what they've told everyone else on this thread. At least the genius bar tech absolutely agreed that it was complete BS and advised me to buy a diff pair of earbuds from a competitor or if I wanted to stay with the AirPods pros go to Best Buy because they're on sale for $189. Apple makes billions and they just F us customers over. The fact that we can't even trade in the defected AirPods to use towards a new pair makes it even worse! Shady.

I’ve had almost exactly the same problem as GreggMig. Right pod of my airpodpro 1st generation A2084 crackles under all conditions. Did an exhaustive chat to check all issues and was told that they were manufactured October of 2020 and I could fix them on my own. Not covered under warranty or recall. I see at least 33 other people on this thread with the same issue crackling in right pod. If anyone knows of a class action suit or wishes to start one, please respond to me on this thread so I can read it. I plan to contact someone about this Apple just put me in a dumpster with no recourse to contact tech, manufacturing, or any other department to see if Apple has been told about this issue after September 2020.

I appreciate the response and effort the try and help but It's not a problem with interference. I tried everything and the right one is not working correctly. As I said in my original post, I brought my AirPods Pro to the Apple store and they confirmed that it failed the test they do to determined whether it needs to replaced or not. In fact both the right and left one both failed and they said they need to replace both of them and didn't even give me an option to replace only the only I am having the problem with. The cost would be $90 each ... I think he said the total would be $183 to have them both replaced with another set of 1st gen AirPods Pro. Like I also said, if I am going to spend $183 I will put that towards a new pair of 2nd gen AirPods Pro that I can get on sale right now, brand new, for $199.99 at Best Buy or Verizon rather than pay $249 at the Apple store. But all this has put a bad taste in my mouth for Apple and this product and I am think I should compare them to the many choices now available for wireless earbuds. For $200 I have choices, but that's not the point of my post. My AirPods Pro clearly has the defect that the ones being replaced for free have that were built before Oct 2020. Mine were built in October 2020. Apple is trying to say that they fixed the problem in September 2020 and starting in October 2020 the AirPods Pros being manufactured in did not have the defective. I am telling you all that this is NOT TRUE! There are others who have said the same thing and even some people who bought theirs in 2021 that have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM! Apple should face the facts and do the right thing. This is a mistake that they made and they need to move that date to a much later month and year when the problem was actually fixed!! I don't know the exact day mine were manufactured but it was Oct 2020 so it may have been 1 day!! ...or at most 31 days that I missed the cut off even though I got a pair with the defect that was their fault and their problem. I paid full price for them and now can not use them. They are unusable and I am being offered no recourse except to pay close the the full price of a new improved gen 2 pair for a presumably refurbished pair of gen 1. This message needs to flood all the groups and chats out there discussing AirPods and Apple products because I'm not the only one getting screwed here.

I have had the same exact experience. Apple as we use to know it, is over. They no longer do the right thing. I am slowly transitioning away from Apple starting today. What a dumb decision on Apple’s part, make a defective product, acknowledge that they have done so, create a program to fix it and make it right, only to turn around and not accept responsibility. All that I can say is, wow! This is how you lose lifelong customers, and people that promote your brand to so many others. All over $250, that in your corporate greed, you want people to send to you every six months, when you send a software update that renders their device unusable. Wow! Cannot believe it would come to this.

It's incredible how many people have the same problem and Apple is giving the same answer to everyone. In my case it was exactly the same. The problem is only in the right earphone and the company is not responsible. They tell me that it is out of the warranty period. On top of that, when I sent it to the technical service, they are forcing me to change both earphones because according to their review, "Both" have problems, but only the right one fails. Now, to change both, I practically have to buy new ones. There are many of us who were Apple fans, but this type of situation makes it impossible to continue with that loyalty. We have to see how the company takes responsibility. It is unacceptable that such an expensive product does not give you the guarantees. It is a terrible way to force consumers to change the product. We MUST take action on the matter. We cannot accept this answer.

AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues


Apple has determined that a small percentage of AirPods Pro may experience sound issues. Affected units were manufactured before October 2020.

An affected AirPods Pro may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors:

  • Crackling or static sounds that increase in loud environments, with exercise or while talking on the phone
  • Active Noise Cancellation not working as expected, such as a loss of bass sound, or an increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise


Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will service the affected AirPods Pro (left, right or both), free of charge.

Yes. A thousand times yes. Or more realistically four times yes.

I had my right Airpod, and one time even the case, replaced FOUR times under warranty. The last time they actually held up the longest (just outside of warranty), but then started crackling again. Went to the Apple Store and they just tried to sell me new ones.

The first time I went, the guy literally said "lemme guess, 1st gen?".

Honestly the correct move for Apple would just be to upgrade 1st gen owners to 2nd gen but instead we're being told too bad.

It's always the right bud which is the one I fall asleep with the most. But one of the times I visited they confirmed both had the issue and I rarely even use the left one.

I've been left with a really sour taste over this and there's no way I'd take a chance on the 2nd gens.

obviously, they underestimate how destructive this policy is. Yes, I used my AirPods Pro for more than a year after the issue occurred. I had so effectively learned that Apple stuff is so bombproof that I thought the problem was me. My job is too dusty, or my ears are too dirty. Breaking that perception of durable long-lasting products with reliable warranties; is like the first time your old reliable car has a check engine light. Every brand has a lifecycle, and I hope this isn’t the beginning of the end for this brand. It’s for sure a misstep.

This is exactly what happened to me. Found the article, made the appointment using the link in the article. I go and am told yes the left one is broken, the right one also failed. My serial number IS in the recall, but it was passed the 3 years. It has been broken for more than a year, but I just put them away because I had no idea about the recall. You want to tell me apple doesn't know how to send out a message to let us know??? The Apple Store employee told me they also think it's not fair and told me of some better options than the apple brand. Clearly they know something and want to steer us away from them doing this to us again. Such a rip-off. I hardly use AirPods unless I'm on a trip with friends. A rare event! The left ear, the minute you put it in sounds like an AM radio. Static only. Even when nothing is playing.
