On My Mac mails disappeared

After formatting and reinstalling Mac OS, I could reinstall the Mail app, but the mails that I have archived on On My Mac were gone. Are they not saved on TM (Time Machine) ?

It is unclear why all your old files were not restored, including 'on my Mac' emails. If Migrating all your user data did not produce your emails, you can ask time machine to show them to you directly.

With you Mail window frontmost, and your time machine drive connected, click on the Time Machine Icon in the Menubar and select "Enter Time Machine". You get the current Mail window on top of a stack of Mail windows going back, back, back in time.

The presentation is Mail as it was at each backup date. It really is pretty cool. But it takes a moment each time you change something, so be patient.

if the set of backups is very small, you may have accidentally started a new backup when you updated your system, rather than continuing with the old one.

Recovering eMails from a Time Machine Backup:

If these eMails were on the Mac when the Time Machine Backup was created, then, yes they would reside on it. So, use Migration Assistant to perform the restore.

  1. Go Here: Transfer from PC to Mac with Migration Assistant - Apple Support
  2. As it Reads: "Use Migration Assistant to transfer your contacts, calendars, email accounts, and more from your Windows PC to the appropriate places on your Mac."

"On My Mac mails disappeared: I have a backup on Backblaze (online backup). I can see the Library folder there which is quite large so I wonder if I can recover it from there

Exporting from Backblaze:

Ask Backblaze if you can export it. You’d find that in of the Contact Us site of their Web site.

  • If possible, Drag & Drop it from that backup.

  • Another option might be to Copy & Paste the eMails: “Select All” > Copy > Paste

.

  • A third option might be to perform this data transfer using the Mail app on a Mac, and then select Mail in iCloud settings on your Mac and on your iPhone, so that all transfers between to two.

If there are thousands of items to transfer, then it will take some time.
