how to properly eject iPhone after transferring pics using Mac's Photos app? (OS13)

I do not use iCloud for my iPhone photos. I remove them from iPhone 13 and transfer to a Mac running OS 13. But once the photos are transferred to "Photos" app, I cannot see any way to safely EJECT the phone.

I eject it in a Finder window, but its still recognized inside "Photos" app. The "help" section inside Photos offers this advice, but when I try it, I do not see "UnMount" is it Safe to unplug at this point? Thanks, Deb

  • Note my OS is currrently 14.4.1, NOT OS 13. I am running Photos version 9.0

Came back to this post to try to get a clearer reply some months later. Just tried connecting my iPhone 13 AGAIN. STILL dont see a eway to EJECT inside Photos app. So the ONLY way to PROPERLY eject is via a FINDER window?

thanks !

Hi Deb,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you'd like to learn more about ejecting your iPhone from your Mac once you've finished importing photos to your Mac.

Once you're through importing your photos, you can simply disconnect your iPhone from your Mac as outlined here: Import photos from a camera or phone using Photos on Mac - Apple Support

"Import photos from a camera, iPhone, or iPad

  1. Connect a camera, iPhone, or iPad to your computer.
  2. Make sure the camera or device is turned on and the camera is set to the correct mode for importing photos.

For information on which mode to choose, see the instructions provided with your camera. If your camera has a “sleep” mode, make sure it’s disabled or set to a time span long enough to allow your images to download.

3. Open Photos (if it isn’t already open), then click the device under Devices in the sidebar.

Note: Devices appears in the sidebar only when a camera or storage device is connected.

Photos on the device that you’ve already imported are shown at the top of the Import window; new photos are at the bottom. At the top center is the Album pop-up menu. The Import All New Items button is at the top right.

Photos displays all the photos and videos on the device.

Tip: If you want Photos to open whenever you connect this device, select the Open Photos checkbox.

4. If you want to delete photos from the camera after importing them, select the “Delete items” checkbox.

This option does not appear for all cameras.

5. To set where to import the photos, do one of the following:

  • Import into an existing album: Click the Album pop-up menu, then choose the album you want from the list.
    • Note: If you participate in an iCloud Shared Photo Library, choose Your Library or Shared Library from the Add To pop-up menu.
    • Import into a new album: Click the Album pop-up menu, choose New Album, enter an album name, then click OK.
    • Import into the Photos library without specifying an album:  Click the Album pop-up menu, then choose None.

6. Do one of the following:

    • Import all new photos: Click Import All New Items.
    • Import a selection of photos: Click the photos you want to import, then click Import Selected.

7. If a message asks whether you want to delete or keep the photos on your camera after they’re imported, click Delete Items to remove the photos, or click Keep Items to keep them on the camera.

Photos imports your photos. To cancel importing, click Stop Import.

8. When all photos have been imported, disconnect the camera or device from your computer.

If you didn’t import the photos into an album, they appear in the Imports album in the sidebar. They also appear among the other days and months in your Photos library; to browse them, click Library in the sidebar. To organize imported photos into albums, select photos in the Imports album and drag them into albums in the sidebar.

If you have photos taken with a film camera, you can import them into Photos by converting them to digital files (using the Image Capture app and a home scanner). With Continuity Camera, you can take a picture or scan a form or document using your nearby iPhone or iPad and have the photo or scan appear instantly on your Mac. See Insert photos and scans with Continuity Camera. You can also use the Image Capture app to set Photos to open automatically whenever you connect your camera. See Scan images in Image Capture and Transfer images in Image Capture.

Tip: You can change the date and time of scanned images in Photos; select the image and choose Image > Adjust Date and Time."

We hope this helps.

Take care!

Alas, this is what I do each and every time I connect a digital camera or an iPhone. I’ve been using iPhoto since 2009 and finally switched to Photos!

now, in the photos app, the ONE thing that I notice is, there is NO EJECT symbol. No “UNMOUNT” prompt as outlined in the above instructions, appears!

that is, No way to right click, no other way I can see to highlight the device IN ORDER TO eject it properly! Does closing OUT photos app PROPERLY eject, do you know?

I DO see the option in FINDER only! THAT is how I ended up ejecting.

I posed the question because I am consistently flummoxed by the (new to me due to max upgrade) Photos app, and I DO really miss the ease of use of iPhoto, which I used until January 2023.

I’m asking why the EJECT feature went away between the former iPhoto —->to Photos ? but I guess my question has been answered by your kind reply! Thanx 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

THAT is exactly what the original question is about. HOW to eject iphone INSIDE the PHOTOS app. used to be able to eject inside the iPhotos app. Now that it is Photos, the "unMOUNT" option when right clicking on the device no longer exists. Thus begging the question, how to properly EJECT inside Photos app?
