I forgot to mention in my post above that I've had a chat with my brother-in-law and he said that he's not had the sensor issue since getting his phone (He's only had it for 1 week - maybe too early to tell) and he doesn't use any screen protector or case at the moment. He'll update me when his bumper arrives and he's had a chance to test it a bit.

I just got my iPhone 2 days ago and I have this issue. I've only made mostly short calls, but about 1 in 4 experiences a problem (speakerphone being turned on, or call getting muted). I have a Best Skins Ever clear protector on the front.

Since I have 27 more days to see if a fix comes out, I'll just see how it goes. If there's no fix in 27 days, the phone will be returned. What I don't understand is why anyone would keep a phone that has this problem. Return it!

Many people kept the phone past the 28 days threshold after being promised that a fix was 'coming in the next couple of weeks' Yet here we are 2 months later and stil no fix.

That's my point. I wouldn't have kept mine. If a fix is promised in October and my 30 days are up in September, I'm still returning it. I have a tendency to believe the consumers opinions more than Apple's promises. 😉 Then, when the real fix is out (if it ever is), I'll go back and get it. It's my fault for not looking into this issue before I purchased. I knew about it a month or so ago, I had just assumed it was resolved.

Okay - Forther to the info I posted before, when I first got my phone I full body wrap screen protector on it that same day. It was never taken off until last weekend when it was taken off to place the phone in the Otterbox Defender. I never had a single instance of PS sensor issue with the screen protector (like Zagg Invizible Shield but the US Bodyguardz version). It goes without saying that a screen protector, particularly this type of screen protector, desensitises the screen. I have also not had the PS issue with the Otterbox Defender, but I have read reports that some users with the Otterbox Defender do have PS issues.

Without evidence to the contrary (ie a user who has a faulty phone, returns it, and then gets a perfectly working handset), I am left with the conclusion that all the iP4s have the PS sensor issue, just as they all have the antenna attenuation issue. It seems that the user's use of the phone dictates whether the PS issue becomes a fault, or becomes a non-issue (ie just a face torch). Users either have no issue with any handset, or they have an issue with all handsets.

That said, even after your 30 days, you could continue to have your handset swapped out for a nice shiny new one on the grouns that your handset is not fit for the purpose of making phonecalls. If they refuse to swap out the phone, tell them you cannot make phonecalls on it, and can you have the handset returned to the factory for testing, and will they provide you with a replacement working handset whilst yours in being repaired. If they refuse and you signed up through a service provider, go to your service provider and ask them to intervene citing that they have failed to ensure you have a working handset and are not fulfilling the service contract, and asking them to stop billing you until such times as service is provided by them or their manufacturer. Make sure you make it clear that it is 'their manufacturer'. They chose who to purchase the iPhones from and in what condition, not you. You purchased from them ion trust and promise that it was suitable to fulfil the contract.

So long as you know your rights, you can play the faulty handset game from now until eternity, going through handset after handset until Apple either offer a full refund themselves, or they provide you with a better replacement handset (ie the next model). If you decide to go down this route, read up, make sure you know the differences between the iP4 and the iP3GS so that you can fend off the iP3GS offer as a suitable alternative handset. Be determined and be robust, and if you need to be loud in store and dominate the environment, do so. Don't get offensive or angry.

I'm sure I don't need to explain to you guys how to win an arguement and look after your rights. If I do, you need to start looking after yourself better.

Why on earth would I go through all that hassle?! If my phone won't make calls, I'll return it and go back to my 3GS. Problem solved. I am not going to fight the cell phone company or Apple. I'll just get the runaround, excuses and if I did manage to get my phone swapped out, a phone with the same problem. I can't even get our local AT&T retail store to pick up the phone when I call, so I sure as **** am not going to run back to the store every time I have a faulty iPhone 4.

I'm going to save myself some time and a lot of hassle: problem not resolved in 27 days by iOS 4.whatever, the phone is going back. I have tons more in my life to do besides fight with two companies who give no crap about me or my cell phone problems. I can't believe more people with this problem aren't doing the same.

I am wondering if they will also release iOS 4.1 by Friday just a few days before this event?

Maybe they are just going to have a sing along, why else would they put an image of a guitar in the invite? Sing Kumbaya or something like that to bring peace to ME's tortured soul. 😉

You sure you are getting a "new" phone? See my other post.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that after I raised so much h3ll over 2nd replacement's scratch that they are sending me new phone and it's not scheduled to ship until Sept. 10th. Not sure if that has any significance. Good luck.

I've had about all I can take with the proximity sensor and called Apple this morning. They're overnighting a new phone. Hopefully I won't have the issue with the new one.
