Precisely!

Thusfar 25% of its' first year has been blighted by this and other well documented problems.

I'm more upset at the erosion of trust than anything else.

But what you're failing to remember is there is nothing new here. At the launch of every significant upgrade to the iPhone there have been issues and some of them pretty sizable. When the 1st 3G came out, the thing wouldn't connect to 3G even you danced on cell tower. The masses were upset. Apple solved the problem, but it took some time for the first significant update. The 2G also had proximity issues. It took time for an update. And the list goes on. People need to just chill here. And respect the company who single handedly revolutionised the smartphone and who depends on over 1/3 of their annual revenue on this device and understand they need it to work and they need people to continue buying it. As such, they will do everything they can to ensure major issues are resolved.

But this constant bickering and the "holier than thou, I know and can predict the future with 100% certainty," needs to stop.

I mean really, who was it that suggested emily is really a bald man who wants to be a pretty blond (paraphrasing of course).....was there any reason to say something that childish and rude?

Firstly, thanks for your even tempered and considered response.

Next.../puts hand up/ yes it was I who suggested emilylab was etc etc. It was my poor attempt at humor, whilst trolling for a response from emilylab. He/she/it (dammit there goes that stupid childish humor thing again...stoppit now dammit!) did not deserve to be the butt of my joke - apology offered.

You're welcome and I hope emily accepts your apology without reservation......

Sometimes we (myself included) get too caught up in our emotions and the fact that we have such strong emotions for a device to begin with says a lot about the device. Now, to the hopeful thought that Apple has listened (my bet is they have) and the PS issue will be distant memory very soon......

Cheers.......

12 pages into the 3rd version of this thread and 80% of the comments are arguments between the same people (Michael Empire, golfying, mbassoc2003, chotty1, rbrylawski).

Shame, shame I'm really disappointed in you people. It's like you have a undying urge to reply to every little thing each other says, cuz everyone wants to think they're always right. 😝

I guess it makes for passing the time whilst waiting for apple to get its' act together 😉 Apologies if it ticks you off more than waiting interminably for a fix to arrive which should never have been necessary in the first place.

*The real shame* is that apple could at one fell swoop render this thread utterly redundant yet it chooses not to.

No offense, but I for one don't care if you're disappointed in what I've written. And what purpose does your post serve?

Point proven... your uncontrolable urge to reply. And I bet you're going to reply to this as well. LMAO 😝

I'm just bored man, no need to be all serious. We're on the 3rd thread about this issue and none of us has heard anything really new or official from Apple since Steve Jobs press conference. I think we're all just bored, uptight and have resulted to going back & forth yelling at one another, and no one has contributed anything useful in the last month. Just speculations and name calling.

Your presence here has made posting on this forum practically unbearable. This is one of the reasons I don't post here. You and Himoura would make a nice couple. I have said what I have said regarding the proximity sensor issue and that's that. I am not an engineer, I am making assumptions based on what I do know. I find you guys and your attempts to discredit me rather amusing. If I have no credibility than please continue to mock one another and argue amongst yourselves.
And if I am simply taking pics that have been posted on the internet then please show me one example? What pics did I steal off the internet and use for my own evil agenda on this forum?

I resent that. Himoura's my wife. How dare you post disparaging comments about her. You're right. You're not an engineer. You are deducing things based on supposition just like everyone else. Either that ot you are confessing to breaching your confidentality agreement with Apple as a beta tester. You don't have the succinct clarity of someone who writes for the press, so if you are in the media, I'd assume it's something flowery. Either way, you said it yourself. You're not an engineer and you're only posting what you've deduced from the information you've gathered. Welcome to the forum That's what we're all doing here.

@germanylostthewar its not that im trying to discredit you its just that we have no way of knowing if you are giving us accurate information or not. i should just believe everything you say without any skepticism? um ok. and btw i guess apple did kick you off the forum if you had to make up a new user ID...

@mbassoc2003 ... eh..

Aug 24, 2010 6:19 AM in response to Nubz N.

this thread has digressed into worthless banter. i have only one more intelligent thought to add to it.

It is my personal opinion that IOS4 is the culprit in all the issues plaguing the Iphone4 right now. I believe the phone is a feat in engineering and design marred by an unfinished and overhauled new version of the Iphone OS.

I am sure apple already knows this and is addressing more then just the PS issue in the new OS. I will say this though. If all they address in 4.1 is just the PS issue then i will be severely disappointed. IOS4 needs a lot of trouble shooting.

~Proximity Sensor Issue
~headphone voice activation bug (this is IOS4 not faulty headphones)
~Typing Bug on Keyboard (there is a bug that causes you to skip to the end of a paragraph when trying to correct a mistake)
~Safari browser crashes (this is an old bug that still has not been addressed)

Over all i think apple was a wonderful product on their hands but some of the bugs in the new OS that were not present in the old one are simply unacceptable. I love this product but would also like to see some of this stuff get fixed. the fact that they rolled out an update to fix a security hole so fast and neglected to fix the stuff that really matters speaks volumes to me about how they prioritize their updates and fixes.

Customers > AT&T ... this should be the mentality but sadly its not.

I heard someone say you can press the Home button and it takes you to your apps, so when you cradle the phone on your shoulder, it won't hang up the call. You might open your stocks, calendar and facebook but atleast you're still talking. Does it work?

What a lot of people have reported as a workaround, is to hit home and select calculator. You might see a number of keystrokes in the calculator, but you won't mute, hangup or do anything unplanned to the call......

I may be wrong, but I thought that pressing the home button cancelled the call.

Wow this thread should be in the Guinness Book Of Records! I've not experienced the issue yet, as I just got my iPhone 4 three days ago and haven't used it (until I get my otterbox case, or at the very least screen protectors, I am not taking any chances).
However, reading a sizeable portion of this topic (I'm not that mad as to read every post...I'd not get any work done for a week!) I was wondering if anyone has tried to compile a list of users with proximity sensor issues and one of those without the issue containing details of what case they're using, if they have screen protectors or if their phone is naked. That way we could maybe get a feel for the real world impact of this issue...i.e. does it show itself more frequently if a certain type/brand of case/protector could be making it worse.

Now, before anyone has a go, I do believe the issue is with the design of the sensor and that some people without the issue affecting them may have ears suited to the placement of the phone (iEars???) or other ways of holding the phone during the conversation.

In terms of those claiming it has to be a hardware re-design, I'm not sure, but may be the case, time will tell. A software/firmware fix should be possible, though. After all, what's to stop Apple changing the OS to behave differently when the phone app is being used, such as making the screen lock automatically in such a way that the only way to wake the screen is to press the home button and then drag a slider on the touchscreen (much like the way you wake the phone screen up when on standby. After all, the Samsung M8800 I've upgraded from used the hold button to unlock the touchscreen during a call.

Obviously the home button press would need to be configured to prevent the call from hanging up, to allow in-call functions like speaker etc..

If the proximity sensor is an issue, Apple are no doubt on the case and hoping it's not just fixable with a mass recall, so the list of the circumstances causing the issue for users (like cases/screen protectors) etc would help decide if they need to adjust the gain of the sensor. Also our suggestions for ideas of software interface methods of waking the screen will help as well. That way it'll get fixed quicker and everyone with the problem will be happier.
