MacBook Pro 13-inch Model A2338 - Login Screen with only the Background showing

Hello Apple Community,

I’ve been asked by my neighbour’s daughter to check out her 13-inch MacBook Pro where the built-in display doesn’t work but will output to an external monitor or TV. As far as I can get with this machine is to the point where it will show the Big Sur Wallpaper and the Mouse Cursor that will move around but I can’t do anything with it. She needs the data off of it and trying to boot into Recovery Mode from the laptop just results in a blank screen from the external monitor. Is there any way I can get past this? The model is A2338.
