General and ongoing cleaning can help you maintain your AirPods or AirPods Pro.

Noise cancellation with one AirPod keeps turning OFF

AirPods Pro by default doesn't allow noise cancellation unless both AirPods are put in your ears. If you try enabling it with only one earpiece, the iPhone gives you a haptic vibration and resets the setting back to "transparency".

However, there's a setting in the AirPods settings under "Accessibility", called "Noise Cancellation with One AirPod". Enabling this setting allows noise cancellation to be turned ON even if only one AirPod is being used. Very well.

EXCEPT THIS SETTING IS TURNED OFF EVERY OTHER DAY OR SO!!!!

Why is this happening? I've seen here this same issue reported by multiple people, and all they got were cookie-cutter responses about noise cancellation in general. I suppose those responses were coming from AI bots, because they have nothing to do with the issue at hand.

So, dear non-bot Apple employees: please send this issue to the developer team responsible for the AirPods accessibility settings, and make them fix it!

Thanks.

Are you even human? 🙄 Because what you wrote has nothing to do with the issue I described! You just pasted a cookie-cutter response about noise cancellation in general. I KNOW HOW NOISE CANCELLATION WORKS, IT WORKS FINE. The issue is that iOS or the "AirPods OS" keeps forgetting the "Noise Cancellation with One AirPod" setting.

Do you comprehend this?

Hey tzahola,

Follow these steps to ensure ANC is working correctly on your AirPods Pro:

  1. Make sure you have the latest software on your connected iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac.
  2. Put both AirPods Pro in your ears and check that Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is turned on.
  3. Clean the mesh located on the top of your AirPods Pro. Sometimes, Active Noise Cancellation can be affected if debris or earwax builds up in the area shown below.

If Active Noise Cancellation still isn't working as expected on your AirPods Pro (1st generation), refer to AirPods Pro Service Programme for Sound Issues.

I hope this helps! Any more questions? Just reply!

Hi tzahola,

I understand your frustration with this recurring issue with your AirPods Pro. It's frustrating when a problem persists, especially when you've tried to address it through community forums and have received responses that don't seem to directly address your issue.

It's worth noting that community forums can sometimes have a mix of responses from users with varying levels of expertise, and not all responses may provide the specific help you need.

Here are some additional steps you can take:

  1. Contact Apple Support Directly: If the issue persists and the community forum hasn't provided a satisfactory solution, consider reaching out to Apple Support directly through their official support channels. You can use this link or use the Apple Support app on your Apple device to initiate a chat or call with a support representative.
  2. Provide Detailed Feedback: When you contact Apple Support, be sure to provide detailed information about the issue, including the steps you've taken to reproduce it, the frequency of occurrence, and any specific error messages or behaviours you've observed. This will help Apple's support team understand the problem better.
  3. Check for Software Updates: Keep your iPhone and AirPods Pro up to date with the latest software updates. Sometimes, issues like this can be resolved through software updates, as Apple continually works on improving the performance and stability of their devices.

I apologize for any frustration you may be experiencing, and I hope that one of these steps will lead to a resolution for your issue. It's essential to persist in seeking assistance from official Apple support channels as they are best equipped to address specific problems with their products.

My GOODNESS you are correct. This absolutely seems like bot responses or at the very least, weak cookie-cutter responses that do NOT address the issue whatsoever. A bane in the world of support which I work in professionally.

I remember activating the setting you're talking about then got EXTREMELY annoyed to find it undone. Perhaps an iPhone OS update does this? Either way, I have no idea why they would have this setting to begin with or why it would be included in the Accessibility area. It is NOT an accessibility function but rather a basic toggle a user should ALWAYS be in control of.

Hey, fellow human! I Don't think it's related to OS updates, because it happens too often for that. Maybe it's related to the AirPods getting restarted due to drained battery, or not using it for more than a day or so? But it definitely feels like I have to do this every other day or so. (I sleep on my side, so I only put in one of the earpieces, on the opposite side that I'm sleeping on)

Interesting. I don't use it every day but I did use them today and when popping one Airpod Pro into my ear, it did work with noise cancellation. Perhaps it is the battery drainage? I was recently on a long flight where the battery completely ran out and that may be the cause of this. I wonder if it resets other things as well. I also sleep on my side and put one in which is how I usually find out about this.

This noise control toggle button is what is being discussed. Not dirty AirPods. I turn it on and then a day or week go by and it is off. I have all current updates on phone and airpods. I have even went through apple support. I was told that there is no way this can be happening. But I am not alone and it is happening. So yes. Please find a fix.
