Custom tones dissapeared after iOS 17 update

Has anyone noticed that after the update to IOS 17, the ability to have custom text or notification tones have disappeared?

I am not bothered about the stock tones by Apple, and loved having the option to have custom tones. This seems a step backwards for users

Yes, me too. My painstakingly hand made ringtones are still available to assign as ringtones, but not as text tones.
With the contacts who had previously been assigned custom text tones I still have the option to select the custom ones (haven’t tried to change one yet because I don’t want to lose the option) but if a contact does not currently have a custom text tone assigned the only options are the Apple ones.

You need to update to iOS 17.1. The problem ha been resolved.

I auditioned all of them, and I’m currently using “Chord” for incoming email, as I like it better than the old custom tone I was using for that purpose.

I have certain custom tones which I’ve used for well over 10 years, particularly the AT&T Merlin ringtone as featured on the TV show “24.” There’s also a custom chime that I use as the default text notification tone, which is very easy for me to hear even at lower volumes.

As an aside, I am also not thrilled with the new system notification tone, as it is rather quiet compared to the tone used in iOS 16 (and earlier). As far as I know, this cannot be customized by the end user, so I’m stuck with it, as is everyone else on the planet running iOS 17. I’ve always thought this limitation was rather odd, but clearly that’s by design.

Indeed, once you understand the process, it takes only a few minutes.

I’m a bit old-school, so instead of using a plist editor, I simply converted the binary Ringtones.plist file into XML plaintext and edited it manually. I discovered that there is no need to convert it back to binary format, as iOS will read either, so I simply uploaded the XML plaintext file as is.
