Custom tones dissapeared after iOS 17 update

Has anyone noticed that after the update to IOS 17, the ability to have custom text or notification tones have disappeared?

I am not bothered about the stock tones by Apple, and loved having the option to have custom tones. This seems a step backwards for users

I took your advice and reported it to Apple. Hope it gets fixed, because it's a pain in the ***! I guess until then, no customizing already set textones or contact sounds, unless it's a ringtone. So stupid. So inaccessible. I count on my phone making certain noises to indicate certain people and events. And I like custom tones, because it sets them apart from everyone else who has an iphone!

I would do anything to go back to iOS 16 just to have my custom text and other alert tones back

That is not supported. You can submit feedback to Apple here:

Meanwhile, you may want to start your own thread about your keyboard problem. Apparently, your punctuation keys are not working. Which is unfortunate as it makes your post hard to read.

What I don't understand is that my text tones were purchased via itunes store on my phone. And so none of the actual downloads are listed under Tones. But my husband and daughter through my contacts still have the previous text tone I downloaded prior to ios 17, but my son does not...it's gone. Very strange. And when I go to Download previous purchases from Tone Store, there's nothing there. But it's on my iTunes backup. I really don't know what they did. Talk about messing up with people's phones. I can understand if the tones weren't from their store, but mine were.

I think that's the part that's the bug. The iTunes Store clearly thinks you can still purchase tones and assign them to a contact. But, you can't. About half of my purchased tones are still available but some are not.

It's not clear to me if the not allowing homemade text tones, on the other hand, is a bug or intentional.

me too...Absurd.

Greetings. I'm new here, I just signed up to reply: I encountered this problem too.

I still see them all in the "ringtones" list, but as far as "tones" are concerned there is nothing left.

Not even in customizing the tones of a contact.

In the contact data I see the name of the custom sound, but when I go to edit, the cursor is on "default" and there is no trace of the personal ones.

As recommended by some of you, I wrote my feedback at Apple support.

I encourage everyone to do same, so as to (hopefully) speed up the resolution time of this (hopefully) bug.

Greetings from Italy.

So, 17.0.3 does not have the fix…. You’d think they could just refer that part of the code that allows you to select ringtones for test tone use

No one here would know Apple's roadmap for updates. The iOS 17.0.3 appears to primarily aimed at the overheating problem that some people were reporting. This is obviously a more immediate need. It may be that that update was limited in order to get it out quickly.

i had a specific tone for my text alert! I want it back! Now apple has released three updates to ios17 and they still haven’t fixed the problem. Get on it apple! This is my phone, and I want it to work for me, not you! Get on it!

Apple does not read here for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:

And, while you may own the hardware, you don't own the system software that runs on it. You only have license to use it and Apple retains the right to make changes in that software as they see fit. You may not like that but, short of not using the phone, there's not much you can do about that.

I have spoke to Apple Support and took the time to clearly define the problem. She has escalated it to enginerring and urged me to write it up in their "Feedback" system -> Product Feedback - Apple

And to maybe clarify the issue, this is not missing alert tones supplied by Apple, they're still there. Many people do not know they can do what we are talking about because they are the basic enduser (no insult) level. The original site I learned how to do it is here -> Custom Alert Tones It's one of many sources that indicate the process to make, tailor, move to iPhone, and use these works of art we can have a lot of fun with. Bear in mind I also have a MacBook Air that is used in this process and know of no other methods, but I'm confident there's others. Again, I hope this helps.......

Hello ~ Communication is always best but in this situation again speculation will enter the picture so I will not be engaging. You may also be best served by leaving your comments about communication here…

Also a reminder this has affected us all and complaining about it here solves nothing. This forum is not a way for us to communicate with Apple. Apple is more capable than I in worrying about their customer relations. I can’t think of one single product I own that I am 100% perfectly without issue. It will either get worked out or it won’t. I am not pleased about this and have voiced my displeasure.

You are not alone. Why get rid of something that is there and working...Tones are as important as ringtones in distinguishing who is reaching out to you...I have created one for people in the groups that I belong to, one for family members, one for doctors, one for my husband, one for my best friend...one for my brother and sister-in-law which is different from the one for family, not to mention ones for restaurants and businesses that I regularly order from either for pickup or delivery...TEXT TONES ARE AS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT AS RINGTONES.
