Custom tones dissapeared after iOS 17 update

Has anyone noticed that after the update to IOS 17, the ability to have custom text or notification tones have disappeared?

I am not bothered about the stock tones by Apple, and loved having the option to have custom tones. This seems a step backwards for users

I took your advice and reported it to Apple. Hope it gets fixed, because it's a pain in the ***! I guess until then, no customizing already set textones or contact sounds, unless it's a ringtone. So stupid. So inaccessible. I count on my phone making certain noises to indicate certain people and events. And I like custom tones, because it sets them apart from everyone else who has an iphone!

I think folks need to read the contents of this thread closely.

Numerous Individuals here have stated that they have talked to some level of Apple Support about this bug. They have all been informed that Apple’s software engineers are aware of the problem and are working on fixing it, most likely in the next iOS 17 update.

in the meantime, there are (at least) two methodologies to mitigate this issue until an official patch is available. They are detailed elsewhere, and at this point have been disseminated and can easily be found by searching the web.

I successfully applied the plist modification technique to my iPhone 13 Pro, and now all of my text/notification tones are accessible again, just like they were in iOS 16.6.1.

Peace out.

I just finished talking with someone from Apple. Apparently, it's a glitch in iOS 17 in which all tones are being recognized as ringtones, even if they are text tones. They are working on a fix and will push the update once it is available. Definitely report it to apple as the more people that do the quicker they will find the fix (which you would think it would be simple given it's written in the code of prior iterations of iOS...).

i used to be able to set ringtones as text tones. i purchased over 30 ringtones that were short enough to be a text tone & now the only option i have on iOS 17 to set a text tone to is whatever is listed & the few that i purchased that were labeled as text tones. they’re mostly ringtones that are 1-2 seconds long that i used to use & now i can’t. i sure hope this is a bug that will be fixed, it’s very infuriating.

The apple text tones are all terrible. I had custom ringtones for text messages, which I paid for through iTunes. They are all gone from ios17 except as ringtones. Downloading purchased tone doe nothing. Who calls? Everyone texts! There are other problems but custom text tones deleted is at the very top of my list. I wish I had never purchased a new phone. I am angry that Apple is dictating how I can use my phone to receive texts messages.

Hello ~ First of all this isn’t about me personally and I am probably more affected by this than most because I count on them having accessibility problems myself. Remember…we are all in the same boat and being rude which the TOU you agreed to discourages does nothing to help. Apple will either fix it or not. That’s pretty simple. As a business model they would sell more ringtones if they fixed it. Second of all I volunteer here every single day to try and help someone and will continue to do so. This issue will pass and another will take it’s place…such is life. Just wait to see if this is remedied like everyone else. Take care.

I refuse to pay for a text tone that was previously part of my Iphone, which was a recent purchase. I am partially deaf and I had text tone set up for tone I could hear well. After upgrade, I had to choose one that I don't like and I have difficulty hearing it. This really sucks. I called Apple and they helped me at least get my sounds back on, but still can't change text tones. Ring tones seem to be ok, but not great.

Took me a while to understand the changes. The tone I previously used (By The Seaside) for texts, can be used for my phone ringtone. Every time my Phone rings, I think it's an incoming text. If anyone knows the REASON for this aggravating change, please post it so everyone else will know.

Is the tone more than 30 seconds long? If so, it can't be used as a text tone. And, is your iPhone updated to the latest version of iOS (ios 17.2.1 at the time of this writing)? If you have not updated, you may not be able to use custom tones at all for text tones. That ability was removed in iOS 17 but added back in a later update.

That’s the same with me onky ringtones and when I go to download and try assign the tone to the contact text message it won’t do it

like why I don’t bloody get it

The "why" is because Apple changed it. No one here in this user-to-user forum really knows more than that.

I suggest that you submit feedback to Apple:

Note that iOS 17 is not yet an option for selection in the drop down menu. Just make sure it's in the text box.
