To be clear: Standby Mode does work on older phones. Always on Display only works on the iPhone 14 and 15 ranges.

And no, AOD is not ever going to get added to older phones. They don't have the hardware for it.

Kind of. Sort of useless if you have to tap the screen to get it work with the phone in landscape mode on a charger. It really has its advantage if one owns an iPhone with an Always on Display, then Standby Mode is active all night when the phone is on its charger and in landscape orientation without ever having to wake it up.

I'm not IdrisSeabright, but it's actually pretty simple. The Always On Display which arrived with iPhone 14 Pro and now in the 15 models is using the same LTPO display in the Apple Watch that lowers the refresh rate all the way down to 1Hz, so it uses as little power as possible. This is a hardware change, which simply is NOT built into iPhone models lower than the 14 Pro models. Yes, you can leave your iPhone display on always on a lower model and yes, maybe get screen burn-in, which is entirely your choice. You can do this by turning off Auto Lock on your iPhone. But a phone model lower than 14 Pro doesn't have the same screen hardware. And this is NOT apologetics. It's fact.

If you want to use the Standby Mode that is available on the two most recent generation iPhones, then you need to buy one of the models which has the screen which supports it.

You are not wrong. The feature to use Night Stand mode as it was intended to work with iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro models, requires an iPhone with an Always On Display, which no iPhone older than iPhone 14 Pro models have. That doesn't you can use Standby Mode on an older iPhone, but it does require tapping the phone to wake it on older iPhone models.

Sorry Samlanham but I may need to revise my opinion that you are a genius. Tried using the phone as a bedside clock but sometime during the night the display went off. Not much use as a bedside clock if the display does not show 24/7. Will have to find an app.

If you have a phone with an AOD (iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max), Standby mode will come on if it senses movement. Waving your hand in the general direction works. If you have a phone without AOD, you'll need to nudge or tap your nightstand.

Personally, I like this feature as it is much less disturbing than having a clock glowing in the room. And it's very easy to ask Siri to tell you the time without moving much at all.

So that means, with those old devices or new NON Pro models, you wake up in the night, you move or turn to look at the clock, and it lights up ready for you to see it ?

From Apple:

With the Always-On display (on iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max), StandBy stays on to show useful information. For all other iPhone models, it’s easy to activate StandBy any time by either tapping the screen, gently nudging the table your iPhone is on, or using Siri.

Then tell Apple what you think they need to do. I can pretty much guarantee you, they won't bring Always On to iPhones which weren't engineered to have Always On to begin with. Which means your iPhone which is about to be 3 generations behind (iPhone 15 releases in 3 days), just won't have that feature. If it's important to you, trade or sell your iPhone to get a newer iPhone which was engineered to have Always On.

I understand. But I'm afraid our OP here, thinks Apple should magically update iPhone 12 models to become Always On, so they can have the newest and greatest features iOS 17 offers. We both know that's never going to happen. So if someone really wants Standby Mode to work like it will on a newer iPhone with AOD, then they need to buy a newer iPhone which has an AOD.

It would be a good feedback to Apple Because releasing standby mode in IOS 17 and saying that it will be part of new features on iphone models supporting IOS 17 is not fair. The bottom line is that Apple’s announcement does not show the reality.

Standby is part of the new features on older phones. It just doesn't work quite the same way on devices without AOD. That's as fair as life gets.

You could always turn the feature off and pretend that Apple just didn't offer it on your phone.

With standby turned on, If I press single button ,on side, to darken screen, while charging, and in stand, the clock will display for 20 seconds, and turn off. Before the 20 seconds expires, simply touch the screen for 2 seconds and clock will shrink a little and will function fully , and will stay on until picked up and turned face up .

Don't press "done".

When I pick up phone, if I don't turn phone/screen face up to ceiling, I can change clock styles and colors.

Don't ask me how I discovered this because I don't know.
