iOS 17 AirTag sharing with child

Finally found the answer. Not the one I was looking for. I mean what the heck? Why cant we track the same keys or bike or wallet? If my son can see it, why cant I? And vice versa?

Another crappy apple policy, would take another 10 years and than they anounce it as major enhancement…

This does not seem to be an informed decision from Apple, just some programmer that run into some kind of trouble when sharing with child account for some reason.

lets be honest, why can’t I share a tag with a child? Give me a valid reason?

If I give my son a key from our house and that key has an AirTag, I can add it into my account and share it with my wife. I can even share it with my creepy neighbor (if I had one). But I cannot share it with my son?

Who was the brilliant scientist that decided this would be a feature?

Where I live, we have a word to describe this but it may be considered offensive so I will not use it.

Someone please bring Apple to the reason?

I have the same problem and I cannot believe, I am actually stunned that I cannot share child’s AirTag with me and my wife. AirTag which I bought, with my money, for my own child. 

This is a huge problem which needs Apple attention. I want to secure my child’s property like keys, backpacks etc. but I WANT TO BE IN CONTROL! Child of 5-10 years old is not old enough to make proper decidions. Maybe in US but in rest of the world children are children.

This is not a very helpful answer. My 12-year-old daughter has an EpiPen that she needs, and has in some cases left it behind. We didn’t know about the limitation when we purchased our AirTag, and I don’t understand why this would be a feature Apple wouldn’t add. I would like to know if she leaves without the EpiPen, or suitcases if she left it behind I need to find it. Why would you limit this feature in a child account?

I suppose, technically, it was. Back when that answer was posted, there was a program in the forums where "Community Specialists" who were Apple employees, would post answers to questions that could be answered by posting a reference to or quote from a support article and which had gone unanswered by the forum users. But, even though they were Apple employees they were not empowered to answer "why" questions. And they didn't collect feedback. Most significantly, though, is that the program no longer exists. So, though I hope the person who gave that answer still has a job with Apple, it's no longer answering questions here.

Your suggestion makes a lot of sense. Make sure it gets to Apple by using Feedback.

I spent the better part of 15 minutes trying to get my head around why I can’t share an AirTag from one family account to another. There really shouldn’t be any sort of technical limitation here. I mean, I can track location of my children’s devices as part of managed setup… but I can’t share with them the ability to look-up the location of an AirTag? Please tell me this is just an oversight. Otherwise I fear Apple is becoming the new Facebook. All about that revenue and too big to care about what actually matters. Please prove me wrong and fix this.

No, totally opposite. If you add AirTag to your child’s phone you can’t share it with yourself. Even if your child is in Family group and even if it is your freaking child!

this Apple decision is so mind blowing.

AirTag is on my sons bicycle and connected to my phone.

Yes we know there is option to provide feedback. But we also want everyone to know that Apple doesn’t want parents to control their children’s property which in fact is property of parents.

The limitations with child accounts are really annoying.
