Go to settings, go to notifications, go to Messages. Now make sure you have one of these selected. Mine was grey and didn’t have one selected. When I chose Notification Center my sound came back! 😎✌🏼

My wife just discovered this as well. Neither do I hear a sound, nor does the phone illuminate the lock screen when receiving an iMessage. I do feel a tap on my watch, but the watch screen does not show the message, nor does the watch make a sound. No difference with watch mute on or off.

Worth noting however, taking off the watch then allows the phone screen to turn on and make a sound. I wonder how many others with this issue also have watches.

If you have a Apple Watch and updated to the most recent OS, you will only receive notifications on your watch per support:

This is a new feature from the last software :/

Notifications appear on your Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both.

If your iPhone is unlocked, you'll receive notifications on your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch.

If your iPhone is locked or asleep, you'll receive notifications on your Apple Watch, unless your Apple Watch is locked.

you can see that the information is true in this article from Apple: Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

You can provide feedback using this link and select watch because this was a watch update: Feedback - Watch - Apple

Rebooted the phone between setting changes, made so many I forgot what I set things to. I went back and made sure that notifications were enabled for my apps in question (banners, sound, and badges). Also set previews to always. iMessage started to show notifications w/ sound on my lock screen, yea! Mail still wasn’t working. For mail it was the fetch setting that was causing the problem. It was set to automatic (won’t fetch with this set unless you are using the app). Setting this to every 15 min and my lock screen sounds and banners started working.

Not a step by step solution; however, it worked for me…

Just my 2 cents worth. I spent a while in a chat with Apple this morning, they didn't know what the fix was either. But just one thing on the list of things we checked, worked. Well for me anyway. Brand new iphone 15 and ios 17.2

settings> face id & passcode <scroll down and disable the button beside Attention Aware Features. Who knew something so obscure would muck up everyone's settings?

Point to note, notifications are now working AND working with non native apple tones. Hope this helps someone out.

For Signal viber messager WhatsApp messengers, the sound and display of new messages on the locked screen did not work. Messages could only be seen by opening the application. What helped was deleting all these instant messengers, rebooting the phone, re-installing instant messengers and turning on all possible notifications for these applications in the phone settings and the applications themselves. And then the phone overloads again 🤓 I think the old messenger settings after updating to iOS 17 just stopped working (?) (!) iphone 11 pro, ios 17.0.3

Having struggled like others for weeks with notification problems with iOS 17 both on my old XR and my new 15 Pro I've now found an acceptable work around that sorts things out for me - I was experiencing similar issues as everyone else such as missed calls because the phone never rung, notifications in WhatsApp never pinging or showing etc etc. I had tried all previous user suggestions to no avail and as a final roll of the dice I decided that the 'Focus' features may be the source of some of the problems I was experiencing as the issues seemed to parallel what 'Focus' was intended to do - ie silence calls and notifications (Settings > Focus). My 'Focus' was set to give me peace and quiet from midnight to 08:00 hrs and had a couple of exclusions such as emergency calls that I was prepared to take during quiet hours. I had no other exclusions or filters set that I could see that would give me a problem. In any event I decided to just turn every feature off that I could see so see if it would help. I also added pretty much every key contact I had and all my critical Apps as exceptions (Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb). I got quick results - App notifications were returned to normal and App calls resumed as well. So for me it's slightly inconvenient to lose the ability to silence my device at night but it's an acceptable work around for me as the phone more or less is completely functional in all other respects. If you are struggling I suggest you give it a try to see if it works for you.

This can occur sometimes when you setup a new phone by restoring from a previous cloud backup.

Some apps may be still using the previous phones push notification token which is specific to each device.

Most apps will update the token on app launch so hard closing and relaunching app should fix the issue for these apps. Some apps may have a different logic as to how and where it stores the push notification token of your device on their servers.

For whatsapp I think just hard closing and opening the app should reset the token. You may also restart your phone as well to make sure. For messages I believe you need to restart the phone.

This may not be a fix for all who are experiencing this but hopefully will help some. Also as mentioned do be sure to check your focus settings and obviously notification settings for each app you are having issues with.

I found the issue and and it's definitely an Apple bug introduced in iOS 17. Apps that have notifications in CarPlay (Message, Whasta, Telegram, etc...) can play sounds without the need of displaying any notification alert. If you turn "Show in CarPlay" to off, which is the default value for all other apps, sound will not play unless you check at least one alert type.

Reposting just to reach out to more people affected by this bug:

I just got off the phone with Apple Care. It's a known issue and there engineers are working on it. In the meantime, here's what worked for me:

Go to Settings --> General --> Transfer or Reset iPhone

Choose to Reset Settings (as long as you only reset settings, it won't delete your data)

Wait for your phone to reboot

It worked after that. BUT if you go into Settings --> Notifications --> Messages and you try to disable all of the Alerts (where the choices are Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners), it will stop working. It appears at least one of them has to be enabled.

I had the same thing for months. I managed to fix mine by changing a setting notifications.

Settings (apple)

notifications

select what apps

I didn't have one of these selected. (Lock screen, Notification Centre and Banners)

I have always had these disabled on What'sApp but when I selected Banners my alerts started to work.

My other setting remain the same

Allow Notifications (on)

Banner Style (temporary)

Badges (on)

Show Previews (When unlocked)

Notification Grouping (Automatic)

Clearly its still not right but hopefully enabling (banners) may allow you to get alerts again like me.
