After iOS 17.2.1 the whole notifications cocktail involving the iPhone and Apple Watch is a complete disaster, utter shambles. I receive an SMS yet I get NO notification sound AT ALL on either the phone or the watch and no visible indication that I have received an SMS either, nothing, I literally have no idea I have received a message unless I open the app! Nothing on the watch and nothing / no badge on the phone. Yet I can open up Messages on the watch or the phone and can see them all sat there, unread. What's the point of having these insanely expensive devices if they can't even perform the most basic phone functions? This will be the last Apple purchase for me. Sure Android has its problems but Apple is total shambles at the moment! I get the feeling Apple is trying to be way more clever than it actually is, trying to link and mirror too many things and when the wheel comes off it comes off big time, and takes way to long to put back on!!!

I have tried the solutions that other people have offered on this site. Unfortunately, none of these solutions have been proven to be effective. I, along with many other people are still not receiving the notifications on our iPhones.

I have spent three hours on the phone with Apple Support and it is my impression that they are being told NOT to admit that this is a problem. Why do I say this.... it is because they are going through the motions of trying to fix the problem that we are having, but now after almost a month, the problem remains.

We all know that Apple is a company that is on the forefront of technology, but what comes before technology is sales, and that is where their focus is.

In my experience, it is better to have happy customers who are enjoying their Apple product rather than unhappy customers who have spent a lot of money for their phone and then not get to use it to its fullest capability.

I believe that if there is someone who can contact a technology reporter/writer and have them report on this issue, then there will be a fix. Otherwise I think that it is going to be a long and ultimately futile process. I would already have switched to a Samsung product if I had not just purchased a new phone three months ago. I am stuck until this is paid off.

I welcome all suggestions in trying to fix this problem, and hopefully someone will stumble onto a universal solution. Thank you everyone for your help!

If you have a Apple Watch and updated to the most recent OS, you will only receive notifications on your watch per support:

This is a new feature from the last software :/

Notifications appear on your Apple Watch or iPhone, but not both.

If your iPhone is unlocked, you'll receive notifications on your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch.

If your iPhone is locked or asleep, you'll receive notifications on your Apple Watch, unless your Apple Watch is locked.

you can see that the information is true in this article from Apple: Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

You can provide feedback using this link and select watch because this was a watch update: Feedback - Watch - Apple

Updated to IOS 17 today. A few of my apps, Messenger, Snapchat, Instagram, Tiktok, all have the same notification sound now. It's quiet and it's short. The only one I was able to fix was Messenger. I have deleted the other's and re-downloaded them, tried to turn my phone off and back on, and still no change. I also have to leave Discord running in the background because when I completely shut the app down and go to re-open it later, it freezes on the start up Discord logo and then crashes. I have had to delete and re-download 4 times. I'm more concerned with the notification for the above apps mentions since each one had different distinct ones and now they are all the same and too quiet even when ringer is all the way up. It's annoying and I want my regular notification sounds back.

So here’s an update email I received from Apple.

Note: I provided them with multiple screenshots and diagnostic reports from my phone which has the same issues report here.

This was the response:

I received a response from Engineering this morning. At this point, they’ve collected all of the data that is needed regarding your case. I’ve been advised that the solution to the issue you are experiencing with notifications will likely come in the form of an iOS update.

There is no schedule for an update release; however, when an update comes out, please go ahead and complete the update. Engineering will alert me when an update has been released that they feel should resolve the issue but that alert frequently comes a bit late.

Please let me know of any changes to the behavior you are experiencing and/or if an update resolves the issue for you. I look forward to the resolution.

Note: If it’s not fixed by Thursday of next week I’m simply just going to return the three 15 Pro Max iPhones I purchased for my family and I, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 2. I’ll just give another phone brand a try.

My wife just discovered this as well. Neither do I hear a sound, nor does the phone illuminate the lock screen when receiving an iMessage. I do feel a tap on my watch, but the watch screen does not show the message, nor does the watch make a sound. No difference with watch mute on or off.

Worth noting however, taking off the watch then allows the phone screen to turn on and make a sound. I wonder how many others with this issue also have watches.

After the iOS 17 update, I was not receiving iMessage notifications with sound unless the app was open on my phone. I had to enable iMessage notifications on my Lock Screen before I was able to receive the sound notifications. Enabling just Banners was not enough to get the text sounds on my iPhone SE, but enabling just the Lock Screen was.

I hope this is just a bug because I don't want iMessage notifications on my Lock Screen.
