After iOS 17.2.1 the whole notifications cocktail involving the iPhone and Apple Watch is a complete disaster, utter shambles. I receive an SMS yet I get NO notification sound AT ALL on either the phone or the watch and no visible indication that I have received an SMS either, nothing, I literally have no idea I have received a message unless I open the app! Nothing on the watch and nothing / no badge on the phone. Yet I can open up Messages on the watch or the phone and can see them all sat there, unread. What's the point of having these insanely expensive devices if they can't even perform the most basic phone functions? This will be the last Apple purchase for me. Sure Android has its problems but Apple is total shambles at the moment! I get the feeling Apple is trying to be way more clever than it actually is, trying to link and mirror too many things and when the wheel comes off it comes off big time, and takes way to long to put back on!!!

What I have found is that if you do not have an alerts setting selected (Lock Screen, Notification Center, and/or Banners) your sounds will not work. As soon as I select one of these tada sounds started working for texts, snaps, etc. I personally like just the sound notifications without an alert type. Guess Apple feels like you need them.

I found the issue and and it's definitely an Apple bug introduced in iOS 17. Apps that have notifications in CarPlay (Message, Whasta, Telegram, etc...) can play sounds without the need of displaying any notification alert. If you turn "Show in CarPlay" to off, which is the default value for all other apps, sound will not play unless you check at least one alert type.

Frustrating. Ever since the iOS 17 update, my text notifications are not working. I have read some of the messages in this thread and the only way I get the notifications is if I turn on my banner or turn on the notification center or have the notification show on my lock screen I did not have to do this prior to the update, will there be a fix for this or has anyone figured out how to get their text notifications without having any of those lock screen, notification center or banner, turned on?

Had the same issue and solved it by activating all visual notifications with the sound also.

(lock screen + Notification center + Banner) even if i'm not a fan of displaying my chat alarm

Show preview is at : Never(default), so it's blank in the pop-up

Been working since yesterday, so decided to share

Hope this works for you too

UPDATE: With watchOS 10 installed, regardless of other settings,

for Mail it is only by setting in the Watch app

"Notifications > Custom > Notifications Off"

and for Messages it is only by setting in the Watch app

either "Notifications > Custom > Notifications Off"

or "Notifications > Custom > Send to Notification Center" with "Alerts > Sound" enabled,

that those apps' notifications sounds play on my phone while it is locked, but at the expense of them ever playing on my watch.

But as I said in my first post — Previously it all worked perfectly: all apps played a sound on both devices, regardless of lock screen state, when they were set to play a notification sound on both devices.

Since the iOS17 rollout I am only able to hear text alerts if Message Notification Alerts in Lock Screen, Notification Center, or Banners is selected. This was not the case with older iOS software. I truly hope Apple reverts the functionality of message notifications because the new requirement compromises users' privacy and security.

I have tried all of the suggestions that others have posted, however, none of them have fixed the problem that I am having. The issue that I am facing is that the ringtones that I purchased from the iTunes store do work, and they are assigned for specific people. I also had purchased an alert tone from the iTunes store that I use for my message alert. That also works.

The problem that I am having, and have spent several hours on the phone with Apple support is that the sound notification for apps that I have downloaded is not working. For example, I downloaded the "CBS Sports" app and when there was a change in score for the teams that I am monitoring, it provided a notification by sending a default Apple sound. I was fine with that, but as soon as I updated to iOS 17.0.2, the default sound stopped, and now all I get is a faint mechanical sounding clunk.

When I go into "NOTIFICATIONS" and then I see the "CBS SPORTS" app listed, and then when I press on the "CBS SPORTS" app, my "Allow Notifications" is active, all of my alerts... i.e. "Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners" are checked, the "BANNER STYLE" is set to "Temporary", and then under that is the choice for "SOUNDS". The "SOUNDS" selection is also active (showing green), but when I press on it which would ostensibly allow me to choose the sound that I want to assign to the CBS SPORTS app, nothing happens.

I can turn the "SOUNDS" on and off, but it does not allow you to select anything. It is like there are just no sounds available which I know is not true.

I absolutely do not know what to do because it seems that Apple is just ignoring all of this. Look, I like my iPhone 14 Pro, but the facts are that Apple is a trillion dollar company and unless it affects its bottom line, nothing is likely to be done quickly if at all.

I do agree with one of the other people who have posted, and what they said is that we all have to inundate Apple with complaints. If anyone can even notify a tech writer (preferably someone who writes about phones), then perhaps something will happen. In the meantime, if anyone has any sort of solution that works, please post it. Thanks!

How is it that no one at Apple tested this and it's not fixed yet? I had my text message sounds set to "none" for everyone except for a very few people. The same people who I allow to alert me while in Do Not Disturb mode. I no longer get notified when they those people text - ever. Do Not Disturb was suggested to use but it doesn't work and even if it did work, I do not want to be in Do Not Disturb mode all day as a work around. This is all since the upgrade to iOS 17.0.3. This is only one issue with the upgrade but seems I am not alone.

Reposting just to reach out to more people affected by this bug:
