After iOS 17.2.1 the whole notifications cocktail involving the iPhone and Apple Watch is a complete disaster, utter shambles. I receive an SMS yet I get NO notification sound AT ALL on either the phone or the watch and no visible indication that I have received an SMS either, nothing, I literally have no idea I have received a message unless I open the app! Nothing on the watch and nothing / no badge on the phone. Yet I can open up Messages on the watch or the phone and can see them all sat there, unread. What's the point of having these insanely expensive devices if they can't even perform the most basic phone functions? This will be the last Apple purchase for me. Sure Android has its problems but Apple is total shambles at the moment! I get the feeling Apple is trying to be way more clever than it actually is, trying to link and mirror too many things and when the wheel comes off it comes off big time, and takes way to long to put back on!!!

Not receiving Gmail notifications on iphone and apple watch. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Gmail app daily which is ridiculous and that works for a few hours. I have also turned off both devices and back on again. This is very annoying to have spent so much money on these devices and not to be able to receive Gmail notifications. What is going on?

Thanks for this info about the iwatch taking precedence over the phone.

why Apple thought this was a good idea is beyond me.

it should be OUR choice where we want sound not theirs.

bad show Apple

I did find a site that explains it and gives a work around. But the work around comes at the expense of lots of other stuff not working which they explain in the article . Come on Apple gives us the choice of sound on watch or phone or both.

Hi Abbyherrmann,

Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you can hear your iPhone ringing while wearing your Apple Watch. What you've noticed is normal behavior. When your iPhone ringer is turned on, you will hear it ring even if you're wearing your Apple Watch. To silence your iPhone, you will need to turn the ringer off.

silencing the phone is an easy fix. How do you get the ring on both???

haven’t been able to wear my watch since Xmas. 😫

Already posted this but trying to link this with the most recent post so apologies for repeat posts, but :

Go into the watch app on your phone, look for and open passcode, then look for and turn OFF wrist detection.

Sorted the problem out for both myself and my wife's phone (and watch) - and works with phone locked/screen not on.

Hope it works for you too.

I purchased an Apple Watch in December. I just tried turning the watch off as Damianfromvancouver suggested, and Messaging works normally. When I turned the watch back on, my iPhone 13 Pro Max iOS 17.3 will not display or sound or show alerts on the Lock Screen. I've never had this issue before I added the Apple Watch Utra 2 to the mix.

The only way I have gotten my iPhone 13 Pro Max to resume normal Messaging is to turn off the watch. Bluetooth has no effect with messaging in my situation. There are so many people with this same question... (Google Search has About 834,000,000 results (0.39 seconds). I think there are about the same amount of suggestions on how to fix the problem, but nothing has worked for me except for turning off the Watch.

Had exactly the same problem and tried everything (focus settings, sound settings, notification settings, soft restart, hard restart etc) but no change.

Spent a good few days looking at and trying so-called solutions and nothing worked.

Then found a suggestion from some time back, tried it, and it actually worked and has sorted this issue out for both my phone and my wife's - it didn't involve switching off bluetooth as some posts suggest, and agreed, not a sensible thing to do.

We have different version iPhones and different series apple watches, but both phones running 17.3.

I have no idea why this worked but it has for us and we haven't lost or dropped any functionality from either the phone or watch other than "wrist detection" whatever benefit that gives...

Can someone out there just try what I've already posted as I'm curious to know if my wife and I have just been "lucky", or if this does indeed help a lot of the community.

All we did was turn OFF wrist detection (in passcode) in the watch app on your phone.
