Why won’t my iPhone 15 charge up on the qi tray in my Audi q5?

Your welcome. It's too bad car companies don't make their Qi chargers more friendly to other phones. They often just put one charging coil in the middle of the plate. That's not good enough. And soon Samsung will be adopting the MagSafe Standard, which will make newer Samsungs not charge wirelessly with many car chargers. Fortunately, it's not a big big deal as we can still plug them in to charge!

Whatever you bought (and it's highly unlikely you bought a new 15, as they haven't officially been released to the public), with MagSafe charging built into the phone, unless the magnet in your Audi aligns precisely with the MagSafe charger in the phone, it may not charge. I have the very same issue with my 14 Pro Max in a 2023 Genesis GV70. So I plug the phone in to charge if I need to charge it. It just won't charge wireless.

I've come to believe that the magnets in some devices (e.g. MagSafe capable iPhones) are tripping a safety in some of the qi charging pads in vehicles causing them to not charge. As I understand it, it's a safety feature to keep the charger from powering up and trying to 'charge' things like pocket change, keys, tins of mints, etc. which could present a serous safety hazard.

I have found the Qi charging pad in my wife's Tucson works great on my 12 an her 13. I've also found it's a bad idea to plug the phone in so you can use CarPlay and put it down on the charger as it gets really hot...

Nah, I don't think they're tripping anything. In my car, my iPhone 14 Pro Max won't charge on the charging pad. The cars coil in the charging pad, isn't aligned with the MagSafe charging coil on my phone. But I can immediately place our iPhone 14 Pro on the mat and it charges just fine. It's an alignment issue with the coils. The same is true for older Qi charging stands from a couple years ago.

And yes, you should NEVER plug it in to use CarPlay while also placing the phone on a charging pad. Besides, when plugged in for CarPlay, the phone is already charging via the cord.

I have the 15 Pro Max. My 13 worked fine in my new truck but 15 won’t, due to the camera holding it off the flat charging surface. I went back to dealer and tried the new Silverado and it has a shorter slot for wireless charging so the camera is out on its own. Worked fine. I don’t think it will work on any flat surface. I realize I can plug in but I did use this option quite often for quick top off. Bad design on phone.

Double check that. The iphone 15 won’t be available for retail purchase until Friday.

Apple support said they had never been contacted with this issue.

Same issue here iPhone 15 Pro and audi s6 2021. Does not charge my phone disregarding whether it is "cased" or caseless
