iOS17 Upgrade - Wallet/Apple Pay broken

I upgraded to iOS17 last night and now when i open the wallet app on my phone it says "Apple Pay requires an update on this iPhone". This morning when i opened the wallet app for the first time i got email alerts from my credit cards saying my cards have been removed from Apple Pay.

Things i have tried:

Re-installing the wallet app

Wiping and restoring

Wow!

I also opened a case with Apple Support.

They ran diagnostics as well and confirmed it was a software issue for mine.

Since yesterday they have provided a new iOS 17 update overnight to fix the issue.

I can now successfully add by card back on my wallet.

I have not yet checked to see if it works whilst shopping.

After I was able to get the 'fried' part taken out of my phone and replaced with a new part; restored my phone; and, updated IOS 17.0.3 - I am now able to add my cards to my wallet. The entire problems with IOS 17 has caused me a lot of time and frustration. I try to be patient when contacting support, but sometimes when I have to keep repeating the same issue over and over again, I get very annoyed. It just seems that if they are getting a lot of calls/chats about the same issue, there would be some sort of 'alert' sent to the reps flagging them.

This was my response on 10/9/23. I was able to call apple support and they ran diagnostics and sent me to get fixed at store. I went to local Best Buy and they also ran diagnostic and they told me a part needed to be replaced as it had 'fried'. I have NOT had any issues with my phone since then.

I did have to re setup Apple Wallet, which was no big deal.

On 1/1/24, I received a message that one of my cards in Apple Wallet had expired. It had not but I deleted the card from the wallet and then added it back and it works fine. I have Iphone 12. Since then the version on my phone is 17.1.2

My girlfriend had the same issue with her iPhone 13 (less than half a year old).

she upgraded directly from the latest iOS 16 to 17.1.1.

I was reading up in this thread what people had done to resolve it.

I just turned the phone off and after turning it back on it showed the “hello” screen and after swiping up the message that the software update is successfully done.

so somehow the update procedure didn’t finish properly and continued after turning it off again.

Very strange but I’m just happy we don’t have to deal with apple care as the next Apple Store is quite far away.

Finally iOS 17.2 fixed it for me.

Apple reps are quick to tell you that hardware is bad, or software can never cause the issue. Even their diagnostic tests reported hardware failure. they are quick to ask you for more money but never acknowledge or even willing to register a possible issue. I am glad I didn’t spend any money on fixing this. Apple reps are serious scammers.

But after 17.2, I have my Apple Card back in wallet, I can add cards and no more annoying pop up that said my phone require update when using wallet.

I don’t believe it was the overheating issue, mine has never had that, unless it happened while I was asleep or away from my phone I have not had any heat issues, I know that it is a software issue and not a hardware issue (at least caused by software) because it’s happing on multiple generations of phones with the common factor being IOS17… albeit different versions of IOS17, nonetheless, history for me at least is… Apple Pay was working fine, update to 17.0.3, get message saying Apple Pay needs an update, look online Apple has a post saying plug into computer and redownload IOS, double click is still pulling up the wallet but it says unavailable under all cards, restart my phone I get a new all white screen with a loading bar that says something along the lines of “trying to restore data” it loads all the way phone comes back, double click no longer works at all, also can’t pay for in app things that require Apple Pay, thus not an nfc hardware issue but a software one people that have nfc hardware issues it still pulls up the wallet but can’t pay with it… regardless I’ll be taking mine in unless an update rolls out that fixes it…

note I just realized I have another issue… haptics is not working when I type or when I use the new button to change between silent and ring, also when pressing the new button to switch between the two I have to long hold it twice and it’s lagging to change and the settings screen for sound and haptics is glitching out… I’ve never had issues this bad with an iPhone lol it’s 100% software related

The same thing happened to me today. I tried to use Apple Pay, but nothing happened when I double-clicked the side button. I tried opening the wallet app and it was a completely blank screen. At that point, it got even weirder because it wouldn't allow me in the settings to click on the wallet to see if there was something wrong. But I tried powering it off and it's working now. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again, but I noticed it happened with the new update.
