iOS17 Upgrade - Wallet/Apple Pay broken

I upgraded to iOS17 last night and now when i open the wallet app on my phone it says "Apple Pay requires an update on this iPhone". This morning when i opened the wallet app for the first time i got email alerts from my credit cards saying my cards have been removed from Apple Pay.

Things i have tried:

Re-installing the wallet app

Wiping and restoring

My cards were NOT in the Apple wallet, but I didn’t receive any notification saying that they were removed

Now I tried to re-add cards and they won’t enter. iOS 17 needs lots of repair. Every time the face identification doesn’t work(which is frequently )and I enter my Lock Screen passcode wrong (even just one time) , it locks me out of my phone for an hour. I don’t get more tries, nothing! Immediately lock out for 1hour.

After updating to IOS 17 UPDATE on my Iphone 12, I received message that I did not have Apple Py availalbe. I just go off phone with Apple Pay support and he ran diagnostics and stated it is a hardware issue. He made an appointment to take it to my local Best Buy. He said that since I had Apple Plus, it would be covered.

With the initial IOS 17 update, I could no longer access certain parts of phone and spent a long time on phone with support and they finally determined it was due to having VPN ( had Norton) and once I deleted it, I no longer had an issue.

The next update, my phone got very hot - this has never happened - and before I determined it had to do with update, they had the next fix.

This doesn't sound very promising

There’s no reason you wouldn’t. Diagnostic tools exist for Apple to both remotely and in store diagnose multiple hardware issues. If it’s determined that an iPhone with warranty has a hardware issue not cause by user, it will be replaced. I’m a former Apple Store manager and hardware issues are fairly easy to determine in store and do the replacement on the spot.

I’m going to take mine in, I’m not gonna sit on the phone with a rep just to be told the same as what’s being posted here, but unfortunately this happened at the start of my work week and I work nights so I won’t be able to go in for another 4+ days. thankfully Apple Pay still works on my watch… weird… but the double click on the phone doesn’t even bring up my cards anymore and checking in settings just says unavailable… hope my bills get payed lol…

Cards not coming up is a symptom, indication that it’s hardware. If the NFC module isn’t detected, why pop cards up.

Overheating is not related to your issue. Overheating was a cause of software, software didn’t break something causing the overheating. It more likely was a memory leak, causing the processor to continuously run at full speed causing heat symptoms. It could have been an error in the firmware controlling the throttling of the processor to prevent overheating. Multiple possible causes. Engineers resolved it with a software/firmware fix. Nothing was broken in the hardware.

I’ve had the same issue. Less than 2 year old iPhone 13 mini updated to iOS 17.0.3 overnight, was ‘recovering data’ when I went to use it in the morning. When it came back on it came up with a notification that Apple Pay had stopped working.

Apple have told me today it will cost £319 to fix because it’s a hardware issue, I told them it’s clearly software related because it happened when it updated.

Apparently the updates use a lot of power, and if the hardware isn’t powerful enough it can overload it and cause it to break. So that’s why it’s so expensive to fix.

So tell me Apple, why would you enforce an update on a phone that isn’t compatible with the hardware? And how isn’t that your fault?

Hoping the next update fixes the issue. It’s become a habit to not take my real wallet anywhere so this is a really serious issue.

Pedantic but sure, not “enforced” as I could have had automatic updates turned off, but when Apple tells you not having the latest iOS updates is a security risk, and they’re on a device which has access to all of my financial data….

I understand the work that goes in and the cost behind that. It doesn’t change the fact that expecting me to pay for something they’ve broken is an expense that should lie with them, not with me. Not sure why you’re here defending them when it’s clear they’re in the wrong in this situation.

The same thing happened to me today. I tried to use Apple Pay, but nothing happened when I double-clicked the side button. I tried opening the wallet app and it was a completely blank screen. At that point, it got even weirder because it wouldn't allow me in the settings to click on the wallet to see if there was something wrong. But I tried powering it off and it's working now. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again, but I noticed it happened with the new update.

After I was able to get the 'fried' part taken out of my phone and replaced with a new part; restored my phone; and, updated IOS 17.0.3 - I am now able to add my cards to my wallet. The entire problems with IOS 17 has caused me a lot of time and frustration. I try to be patient when contacting support, but sometimes when I have to keep repeating the same issue over and over again, I get very annoyed. It just seems that if they are getting a lot of calls/chats about the same issue, there would be some sort of 'alert' sent to the reps flagging them
