AirPrint not working after iOS 17 Update

AirPrint was working on ios16 using a Canon printer connected to my home WiFi. I recently updated to ios17 and the printer shows up as an available printer but shortly disappears after selecting it. I am able to print on iPad os 16 and my MacBook Air on Ventura using AirPrint. I’ve reset network setting on both router iPhone and printer and I am still encountering same behavior. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix it or if it is a known bug in ios17? I’ve also restarted my phone and tested it on my partners iPhone which shows same behavior on ios17.

Updates are what firmware is all about. To get something working as it should with a newer Operating System and to fix bugs, install firmware updates.

Excellent job troubleshooting!

I was having the same problem printing to an HP9015e printer with my iPhone. I tried everything I found on the Internet and finally decided to delete any HP app from my phone (HP ePrint and HP Smartprint) and then doing a hard reset on my phone. It seems to be working now. If it doesn't solve the problem I will update my post.

ABSOLUTELY! Hardware manufacturers are required to keep their firmware compatible as Apple (and other manufacturers) update to new standards and fix identified vulnerabilities. It is part of the agreement they make when they request Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc announce that their product is supported. This applies to printers, medical devices such as hearing aids or blood sugar monitors, speakers, smart TVs. If this was not a requirement no manufacturer could ever add new features to their hardware.

Photo printing is a special case; that issue has been reported for your specific printer under other conditions also.

Thanks Lawrence, it makes sense to have all the various pieces of information in one place. It will take you a while but it will make things easier for people.

Read your resume and it all makes good sense. As a detailed point, Bonjour (AirPrint) works over Ethernet as well as WiFi.

Good point, I’ll mention it as wired connection, as most users don’t know what ethernet is.

Bought a new iPhone yesterday, I can print to my 12 year old laser with original firmware on it. 😁

Take care Lawrence catch up again sometime.

Congratulations on your new iPhone. I suspect that the Canon firmware problem is that it used an unsupported API or misused a supported API that went away with the latest BonJour update.

Not true at ALL. I print to Lexmark, HP, Canon, and Brother printers at various IT businesses I work for. Airprint will NOT print photos to any printers anymore since IOS 17 came out, it just prints blank pages. This is NOT a printer firmware issue, it is purely an IOS issue. I updated to the new IOS 17.1.2 this morning, and it still isn't fixed.

It has always printed PDFs, etc. just fine, it has just lost the ability to print any pictures from the phone since IOS 17 came out.

Come on APPLE, fix this already!!

My Brother printer will not connect to my iPhone since the latest upgrade. If so many people are having this problem it is clearly an apple screw up. They need to fix it fast. We need to use our printers.

No, it is NOT clearly an Apple screw up, it could be a settings problem, a network problem VPN problem printer firmware problem and more . AFTER you follow the troubleshooting steps here→AirPrint Troubleshooting - Apple Community post back with the results.

Thanks for this! After installing the "HP Samsung Mobile Print" app on my iPhone I can finally use your method and print over WiFi on iOS 17.2. I have an unsupported Samsung printer (M2875FW) that is still in good condition and I'm just not ready to buy a new printer or could not be bothered to setting up an AirPrint server, just because Apple doesn't want to play nice anymore. I should add that the app looks prehistoric and I would still expect Apple to fix this in the OS so that printing can be done natively instead of relying on an ancient third-party app.

My HP printer stopped working on the IOS 17! Thought it was the fault of the printer. I got a new HP printer but it didn’t work as well. It recognised the printer after I downloaded the HP App from the Apple Store, but I cannot print because it always shows the printer offline! It’s frustrating. Both the iPad, iMac and iPhone doesn’t recognise the printer.
