How can I change Standby mode's time zone after iOS 17 update?

I updated my iPhone 14 and was excited to use the new Stand By feature as a nightstand clock. However, I'm in New York City and the Stand By feature only shows the time in Cupertino. What I've tried:

  1. Settings->General->Date and time: time zone is correctly set to New York and on the Lock Screen the correct time shows
  2. World Clock: Made sure New York City is the first time shown in the list. It is.
  3. Settings->General->Stand By: no option to change time zone here

Any ideas how to fix this? Otherwise, this feature is completely useless to me.

Thanks

Hi boaster_11! If you long press the clock face while in Standby mode you'll be able to edit your widgets. Tap the clock widget you wish to update and you'll be given an option to select a city for your time zone. Hope this helps!!

This is the way. People, look at the widgets. There are "Clock" widgets, and there are "City Clock" widgets. Why in the world Apple made a "City Clock" widget the default instead of a standard "Clock" widget that automatically shows the local time according to your device settings...I'll never know. What a boneheaded decision THAT was. At any rate, as IdrisSeabright has pointed out multiple times, you have to DELETE the default "City Clock" widget and add one of the generic "Clock" widgets (which, conveniently, are at the beginning of the clock widget list).

I agree this was not what I would consider one of Apple's better decisions. But, it's not unprecedented. The default city in the iOS Weather app is Cupertino. Over the years, there have been a lot of questions about that as well.

Found an alternate solution if you have only the City Clock widget with Cupertino noted in Standby Mode showing, it is to long-press the widget to get into the edit Widgets available mode, then (and this is what I haven't seen anyone else or anywhere else note) don't long-press the Clock Widget; but a quick double tap of your finger, should bring up the edit mode, where you can search of your closest city.

I am on an iPhone 14, and this only started working with IOS 17.0.3, prior to that, I couldn't edit the City Clock widget except to remove and add it anew; but then, it would default back to Cupertino.

I hope this helps someone.

Also, it is not intuitive and should be an option in the System's Settings > Standby Mode page to change or should default (as others have noted) to the System Settings timezone setting.

See above. If you pick one of the "City" clock widgets, the clock ALWAYS shows the time in that city, doesn't matter where the phone is in the world. The only way to have the clock always show the time that is shown on the face of the iPhone, you must pick one of the clock widgets that DOES NOT have "City" in its name.

I say that about once a page in threads like this. Maybe people will pay attention to you..... ;-)

You have two options. One, change the clock widget from the City Widget to a standard clock or two, change the city. To change, press and hold on the Clock on the screen in standby mode (authenticate as required). To change to a different widget, tap the plus button in the upper left corner. To change the city, just tap on the current widget. It will flip over and you can choose a different city in the list by scrolling down or by typing the name of the city you're looking for.

To change the standby city/clock time do the following:

  • In standby mode with phone on the side, plugged in and clock visible, long press the clock until you get the widgets.
  • Tap the clock widget
  • You should now see a city change box where you click on the city to change
  • A city list of available cities appear and you can scroll or search for the city and SELECT the city. The city change box now shows with your selected city.
  • You MUST click on the screen somewhere OUTSIDE of the city change box.
  • The widgets appear and press done.

The standby city/clock time should be correct.

Agree. It still doesn't work. And by select a different clock widget, I don't know what you mean. There are no other clock options when I hold press, I can swipe up for other things but no other clocks. I can swipe through but it just shows other options like calendar. Please advise. Tap on the "+" button in the upper left, then, swipe down to "Clock". The first one that appears is called "Clock I" it has no city. Add that. Then, make sure you remove the City clock from the stack. Swipe up and down to move through the stack and delete the clock app with "CUP" on it.

It worked different for me. When I opened the Cupertino clock, I found that, if I scrolled down fast enough, I could find my city way, way down the list. Then I clicked on the name of the city. That name replaced Cupertino. When I closed the clock, it spun around and showed the correct time for my time zone.

What I had tried to do yesterday was to type the name of my city into the window on the back of the clock. That did not work. The clock refused to accept the name of the city that I had typed in. What I find today is that I have use the pull-down menu on the back of the clock.

But I have to be fast on using the pull-down menu within the clock. Three times I was too slow, and Standby took me to the next widget.

In contrast to what others have written in this thread, I did not have to delete my clock and then go look for the same clock with the name of my city.

The name of the city appears on the back of the clock widget. It turns out that that city-name window is actually a pull-down menu. I found the pull-down function by random finger movements. Pull down that menu to a city in your time zone and click the clock to go back to its obverse.

Be persistent in using the pull-down menu. Three times this menu took me to the next Standby widget instead of the name of the city I wanted in the clock.

Using this pull-down menu obviates the necessity of deleting and reinstalling a widget.
