How can I change Standby mode's time zone after iOS 17 update?

I updated my iPhone 14 and was excited to use the new Stand By feature as a nightstand clock. However, I'm in New York City and the Stand By feature only shows the time in Cupertino. What I've tried:

  1. Settings->General->Date and time: time zone is correctly set to New York and on the Lock Screen the correct time shows
  2. World Clock: Made sure New York City is the first time shown in the list. It is.
  3. Settings->General->Stand By: no option to change time zone here

Any ideas how to fix this? Otherwise, this feature is completely useless to me.

Thanks

This is the way. People, look at the widgets. There are "Clock" widgets, and there are "City Clock" widgets. Why in the world Apple made a "City Clock" widget the default instead of a standard "Clock" widget that automatically shows the local time according to your device settings...I'll never know. What a boneheaded decision THAT was. At any rate, as IdrisSeabright has pointed out multiple times, you have to DELETE the default "City Clock" widget and add one of the generic "Clock" widgets (which, conveniently, are at the beginning of the clock widget list).

Hi Everyone,

There are a lot of answers here. They are all wrong. I figured it out. It is indeed a glitch and I give apple a bad apple because the default clock is wrong and will remain wrong (for many people). HERE IS THE FIX: 1) Delete the clock, 2) choose another clock or even choose the same one after deleting. That's it. However, if you keep the clock widget they gave you by default, that time does not reconcile, at least not on my iPhone 15 Pro so I recommend deleting and adding a clock and it should resolve. .. I hope. Good luck!

Apologize if I was mistaken. Shouldn’t have come off so strongly. When I read the things above, I didn’t find one that said you must first delete the widget. I only read that you can play with other widgets

Both are options. If you want to use the City widget, you need to change the city to one and the same city. You can have widgets for up to three cities, in fact. But, if you don't want to see the time in another city, it makes sense not to use the City widgets and use the Clock widgets instead. In that case, delete the City widget from the stack.

Thank you!

I think the user interface is very counterintuitive. I figured long pressing on the clock widget to get into widget edit mode. I then tried similarly long pressing on the icon in the widget editing display, and expected to see settings. There was nothing suggesting a simple tap on the widget would show settings. Why not just add a visible "Edit" icon or text that one can click? I don't think this is a very good UX the way it is currently implemented.

And why default to Cupertino timezone and not the local timezone? It's like the Apple devs thinks everyone either lives in Cupertino or wants to know their time.

I have two clocks in the Standby window. The first is the one that has all twelve hour numbers. It is set to Cupertino. The second clock is the stylized one. It is the one with only 12 3, 6, and 9 on it. I do not remember what city this second clock was set to. I would prefer to use the first clock.

I went into the edit window. I held down the face of the first clock. It turned over. I entered the name of my city. I let the iPhone go back into Standby. The first clock reopened to Cupertino time.

Following the instructions in this thread I went into the edit window. I could not delete the first clock, the one set to Cupertino. I did not try to delete the second clock.

I went into World Clock. In there I had two cities. The first was New York City. The second was where I am. I deleted NYC from my World Clock.

I returned to the Standby clocks. Now I cannot edit either clock, nor can I delete them. The first clock, the one I prefer, still shows Cupertino time. The second clock, the stylized one, shows my correct time zone, but whether this clock is set to the correct city, I do not know. Neither this clock nor the one I prefer will turn over and show me what cities they are set to.

I try pressing on the minus sign in an attempt to delete these two clocks. IOS does not respond. These two clocks are still there in Standby.

I do not see in Standby any area on the right offering replacement widgets--unless it is the blue tool "widget suggestions." I have "widget suggestions" on, BUT I get no response from the iPhone when i press the blue icon above the caption.
