iOS 17 alert tones & alarm tones issues
I’m going to do my best to explain what’s going on and hopefully it makes sense.
After updating to iOS 17, I can no longer use purchased tones (from the tones section of the iTunes Store) as text alerts, voice alerts, new mail alerts, etc. I spoke with customer support last night via text and some of the “tones” that I purchased are apparently technically classified as “ringtones” not alert tones (even though I specifically purchased them from the tones section). With the new update, it seems we can no longer use them as alert tones if they are not specifically classified as a “tone”.
All of the purchased tones that I assigned to various contacts can no longer be used… I had specific sounds for certain people so that I knew who was texting me and if it was important enough to open immediately.
I know for a fact that I purchased all of them from the tones section of the iTunes Store because I have a system for finding them. I go specifically to the tones section of the iTunes Store, look at what’s charting, give them a listen, and buy what I want.
3 of my 12 or so purchased tones were truly classified as tones. I had them being used for various alarms throughout the day. Tones are also apparently no longer allowed to be used as alarm sounds… Only those classified as “ringtones” can be used there. Therefore not a single one of my alarms have been going off and instead immediately the sound was set to “none” for them all. As someone who struggles with ADHD, my many alarms throughout the day help to keep me on track.
When you go to select a tone to be played as the alarm sound, you can also click on the iTunes tones store at the top. This takes you directly to ringtones in the iTunes Store, and there seems to no longer be a designated section for tones. When I scroll through and look at different sounds that I think would be classified as tones (even ones I have that I know for a fact are classified as tones), there is nothing in the listing description that says whether or not it is classified as a ringtone or a tone. How is one supposed to know the difference then when making a purchase so that it may be used for its intended purpose?
It is incredibly frustrating to have such inconsistency with this in the new update. I realize there are worse problems to be had, but it has disrupted my personal system that I’ve had in place for years and I’m incredibly irritated that this changed just does not make logical sense... I hope this is just a bug and something they will consider fixing in a future update.
