iOS 17 / PadOS 17 / Mail : no longer remembers previously-used move-to folders

Up until iOS 17, my iPhone and my iPad would remember folders of frequently-moved messages from a known sender. Swipe right on a message and you’d see a folder suggested that was commonly used for that sender.

As of iOS 17, Mail no longer seems to remember previously-used folders, forcing me to navigate through all my folders to find the folder I want to move the message into. Every time.

Seems an unlikely feature to lose. I reported the issue via the Feedback app when I was using the beta, but now that I’m using the production versions I still have the bug but no direct way to further report it.

PS: any idea why Mail is missing from the Applications and Services menu when categorizing this message? All the other apps are there.

I’ve only had my iPhone 15 pro for about 3 weeks. I was having the problem with the Apple Mail app not remembering ‘previously used folders’ to move mail into. Yesterday, I saw where an upgrade to iOS 17.1 fix someone else’s problem. I upgraded from 17.02 to 17.1 last night. Apple’s mail app is now working as before.

i am finding that if you select move too, that a window or side bar opens and is usually near the top of the folder list, if you go to the top you can do a search for the folder and will bring up that folder to move your mail too. This is not as efficient as the mail folder move too suggestion but saves some time scrolling through all your folders looking for the right one…I would show picture but too much info on my folder names and email name to send the pic…sorry…

hopeful they will fix but then again iBooks creating folder on one device used to show up on all your devices to make finding a pdf easier if stored in that folder across devices…they removed so now if folder created in one device now then only appears on that device…why remove useful features for no reason

This problem occurs on the iPhone, not the Mac. On the Mac , the feature still works, but on the iPhone, since thew release of IOS 17, you have to manually choose the folder every time when you try to move the message, and it does not learn and then provide suggestions. This was one of the most useful features in mail as you could sort on the go, but now it is gone and that is incredibly frustrating.

I installed 17.0.2 on my iPhone last night and still no suggested move-to folder

If it’s something they decided to eliminate is a huge mistake because those little features make a difference from the Apple products to the competitors.

if its something that got out of hand I hope they solve it soon.

I have talked over the phone several times to Apple about this issue as well.

My Mac book pro is still suggesting the move-to folders as well as my iPad running under OS 16.7

I guess I’ll use my iPad or MacBookPro to manage mail and won’t update them until I know this issue has been fixed.

I contacted Apple today about this issue and spoke to an advanced support person who said she is escalating it up to the engineers but that very few people have actually contacted them about it. If few people contact them I suspect it will not be a priority to them to get it fixed.

If you are on this discussion and have this issue please contact Apple support and let them know!

Amen to know what person or developer did this…they should be ahem well you know. In the official release of iOS 17.1 it does not even mention that it resolved the mail move to suggestion issue. Apple does not even acknowledge its error even though this forum and other popular website all discuss this snafu as removing a very beloved mail feature.

many forum member myself included only get acknowledgment from speaking to senior tech agents that open a case and give you confirmation that the issue is being addressed and sometimes they even say thanks for letting them know of the issue.

Again I think this was done inadvertently when they added the new pull down search feature to your ALL INBOXES folder to type the name of the folder you wish to move the mail too. I find that really useful and either during the install of this new iOS 17.0 mail search bar feature it knocked the move to mail suggestion or they actually wanted it removed. Then all the negative feedback prompted then to about face and put it back… if it was done purposefully.

apple will never let us know, they do not even acknowledge that it was one of the items fixed in the iOS 17.1 release.
