iOS 17 / PadOS 17 / Mail : no longer remembers previously-used move-to folders

Up until iOS 17, my iPhone and my iPad would remember folders of frequently-moved messages from a known sender. Swipe right on a message and you’d see a folder suggested that was commonly used for that sender.

As of iOS 17, Mail no longer seems to remember previously-used folders, forcing me to navigate through all my folders to find the folder I want to move the message into. Every time.

Seems an unlikely feature to lose. I reported the issue via the Feedback app when I was using the beta, but now that I’m using the production versions I still have the bug but no direct way to further report it.

PS: any idea why Mail is missing from the Applications and Services menu when categorizing this message? All the other apps are there.

I’ve only had my iPhone 15 pro for about 3 weeks. I was having the problem with the Apple Mail app not remembering ‘previously used folders’ to move mail into. Yesterday, I saw where an upgrade to iOS 17.1 fix someone else’s problem. I upgraded from 17.02 to 17.1 last night. Apple’s mail app is now working as before.

I am not sure how much Apple can do about the “Important” labeling. As I understand it, GMail’s approach to sorting messages is a non-standard interpretation of the IMAP (mailbox access) standard. Instead of “moving” messages into folders (as IMAP was conceived), GMail allows tagging messages with labels. This means messages can appear in multiple “folders” as interpreted via an IMAP lens, but that might also be confusing the mechanism Apple uses for making filing suggestions.

Just this week I finally got a few GMail messages that Mail.app used to suggest filing under “Important” with a new and different suggestion that matched how I file them. I think persistence will eventually pay off, but it has taken a very long time (several months of consistent filing) to get this new association to work out. I hope this helps.

I just tried contacting Apple support. The bot I got professed knowing nothing about this issue, but I didn’t want to spend hours on chat with a bot troubleshooting something that might be fixed in iOS 17.0.1.

Normally with upgrades the Mail app needs retraining but recovers within a day or so but this has been happening for three days now. I don’t think they removed the feature as they promote machine learning broadly, but surely hope 17.0.1 comes quickly with a fix.

17.0.2 was initially a release only the iPhone 15s were getting, but now it’s been released for all iPhones and iPads.

The subject of this discussion thread is a behavior that started with iOS17.0 on all iPhones and iPads. As of 17.0.2, the bug (I’m going to call it that, as I can’t believe Apple would kill a feature like this intentionally) persists.

I hope Apple are going to sort this fault out soon!

I’ve now realised that this problem with moving emails to folders not being suggested is also now happening on my old iPhone 8 running iOS 16.7 as well as my iPhone 1; Pro on iOS 17.0.2

Very annoying!!

Whilst posting, I’ve also got a glitch with Safari. It won’t open a lot of links including this discussion site. Had to switch to Chrome as default.

what on earth is going on??!!

Rang support but they didn’t seem to know how to resolve it 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🙄😪

Seems Apple is going backwards!!

I rang Apple Support today about this issue.

Monika did not seem to grasp the issue however many times I explained it, and she had access to my iphone 14 pro too. She just kept telling me I had to select the chosen folder to place the email!!!! Aarghh!!

Hopefully, after a stressful and lengthy conversation we got there in the end and I insisted that she made sure that this problem of folder selection not being remembered & suggested from previous emails/selections was escalated to senior mgt.

Another glitch I had was Safari not connecting to browsers or allowing log in when clicking on a link to a website, such as my car service garage check in/progress of service; also trying to log in to this site too and a few others.

I seem to have resolved it by following a resolution on the Apple Support app >

I unselected BLOCK COOKIES in Settings/Safari/Advanced. Yay! At last!

This was another issue I'd trying talking to Support about but the only suggestion they had was to completely restore my iphone!

I'm also very unhappy about the new Contacts format of grey/black background!

Anyone else?

Feeling very disappointed with Apple of late. All this is so time consuming and stressful!

Hope the Apple developers get to read all this!

So tell me I get email saying the below post removed for inappropriate content…I am flabbergasted, what is so bad….

Original removed post below…

The issue continues, I have tech support asking for more video recordings of how it should look under my non iOS 17 phone and how it looks with all my iPads that are iOS 17.0.2

i am not sure why they keep asking as I even pointed my support agent to the numerous forums explaining the issue. I am not sure the engineers know what happened or how to fix. They are again asking for more diagnostic data.

i regret upgrading all the iPads. This is so difficult and time consuming to manually hunt for folders. I think it would be helpful for those on the forum with this mail issue to get on the phone to apple support like I did and get a tech support agent to do what they ask if me. I think they need more data logs to find solution.

Apple support number that I use: (800) 275-2273

ask for senior support person or supervisor. If you only deal with initial contact you will get nowhere.

Once you get the supervisor or higher support to open a ticket, send them whatever they request but also a link to this forum.

but my supervisor and I have parted ways a few days ago when my ticket supposedly started the developers toward a solution. My supervisor said given the size of IOS to give them time to release an official fix.

wait if you have time for official release…

not patient then use unofficial fix…if I explain, my post will be deleted again…so figure it out…you all are smart

Not to say unofficial does not have other issues but timesaver more important to me

Would you believe it - my old iPad Air running iOS 12.5.7 works perfectly in remembering which folder to file emails in! But not my iPhone 14 pro on iOS 17.0.3!!

Is Apple going backwards?

Ios 17 certainly seems to have gone retrograde!

So many annoying & negative things with it.

Grey/black Contacts background too. Ugh!!!

And I also now now find it hard to put the cursor in a gap in text in a message or email to edit a word without it highlighting the adjacent word - then even worse - it offers a spelling which is totally misspelt!

What on earth is going on with Apple?

Beginning to give up with Apple after being a fan for many years since the iPhone 4s!

This old iPad is a joy to use on iOS 12 vs iOS 17!

All this certainly does nothing to encourage you to want upgrade to a new iPhone!

Does anyone know if Apple read our blog?

And will iOS 17.1 fix all these things?

Oct 10, 2023 3:42 PM in response to Red1948

Hey Red1948…I am not RUDE. I have posted it many times both cryptically and blatantly and each time it is removed by the moderators for violation of rules.

i just got email saying I must stop or else. So good luck. I will say apple is aware of the issue and has addressed but iOS is a large system so fixes take time to roll out.

If you have a backup just before you updated to iOS 17 you can factory reset you iPhone like if it’s a brand new iPhone and restore it from that back up.

Youll need the right IPSW for the iPhone you have.

i strongly suggest to make a backup just before you factory reset it just in case.

Further this site is designed to help forum members and if we have information to allay the worries of our forum should we not post it. How is deletion helpful if it contains information to tell users it is being worked on and just be patient… The information is straight from the apple senior tech agents that open cases to send to the apple developers to research. Thankfully the apple agent open cases, take your devices data logs and forward it to engineers to look at…

I wish the forum agents would look at the topic and maybe they themselves chime in to say apple is aware and working for resolution.

but yes your idea to wait for 17.1 or later before updating is wise. I upgraded all my devices and family devices except for the phones thank the lord we did not do those immediately after iOS 17.0 was released. I just update our iPhone’s last night.
