iOS 17 / PadOS 17 / Mail : no longer remembers previously-used move-to folders

Up until iOS 17, my iPhone and my iPad would remember folders of frequently-moved messages from a known sender. Swipe right on a message and you’d see a folder suggested that was commonly used for that sender.

As of iOS 17, Mail no longer seems to remember previously-used folders, forcing me to navigate through all my folders to find the folder I want to move the message into. Every time.

Seems an unlikely feature to lose. I reported the issue via the Feedback app when I was using the beta, but now that I’m using the production versions I still have the bug but no direct way to further report it.

PS: any idea why Mail is missing from the Applications and Services menu when categorizing this message? All the other apps are there.

Yes, 17.1.1 did fix it and then 17.1.2 screwed it up again. Very annoying.

Well it seemed fixed on my iPhone 14 Pro Max for a while after the update but now seems to not be working again. The move-to suggestion is always the “Important” folder. I dislike the “Important “ folder anyway because all incoming mail is marked as “Important “ therefore using up space. My iPad , even with all updates, still doesn’t remember previously-used, move-to folders. I really hope someone can figure out how to fix this problem once and for all.

I am not sure how much Apple can do about the “Important” labeling. As I understand it, GMail’s approach to sorting messages is a non-standard interpretation of the IMAP (mailbox access) standard. Instead of “moving” messages into folders (as IMAP was conceived), GMail allows tagging messages with labels. This means messages can appear in multiple “folders” as interpreted via an IMAP lens, but that might also be confusing the mechanism Apple uses for making filing suggestions.

Just this week I finally got a few GMail messages that Mail.app used to suggest filing under “Important” with a new and different suggestion that matched how I file them. I think persistence will eventually pay off, but it has taken a very long time (several months of consistent filing) to get this new association to work out. I hope this helps.

The “Important” folder is created by Gmail and can’t be deleted.

I tried to do it logging in a web browser but is something from google system.

What I do is to create a folder or folders within iCloud where I want to move Gmail emails.

I move them from “All inboxes” into the folder I designated and sure it remembers the folder (but within iCloud)

It will always keep a copy of the mail in “Important” within Gmail. There is nothing Apple can do about it being a third party system.

This issue appears again in ios 17.4. Zilllions of subfolders on the DCIM/Internal storage ranging from "202403_a" upto "202403_z" and then starting at "202403aa". Total chaos ... can't find anything what I need to find based on date/time. Currently at "202403da" ... where does it end .. two weeks after release of this reappearing bug. Does this menace wants us to stop taking pictures, stop receiving social media images of videos or worse ... swap our phones for samsung trash with google spywear?

Yes. I have been dealing with this for years now. I was in touch with a support guy at Apple over a period of months who was trying to help. At one point, he downloaded code from my laptop to have the software engineering department look at; and then he ghosted me. I've spoken to two other support people who cheerfully promise to get on the issue—I never heard back from them. Users online have proposed workarounds, but I don't want a workaround—I want the functionality I had back. The curious part is that this works fine on my iPhone (iOS), and it partially works on two university email accounts on my laptop (OS). But even in the latter two scenarios, it gets folders mixed up, or fails to update when I have a new folder for "Admin 2024" instead of "Admin 2023." When you have more than a dozen folders where you need to retain emails, it's a pain, literally (for those of us with carpal tunnel syndrome), to have to drag to a folder name. Meanwhile, Apple is full throttle on developing more emojis and software that allows you to create your own emojis, like that is a serious need.
