iOS 17 handsfree bluetooth issues

With the new update and using a Bluetooth headset (Powerbeats) when I press the CALL button on the headset to use voice dialling and say a name, it calls the person but via the handset only, I cannot hear the Siri caller name repeated, dial tone and persons voice on answer unless I tap the option on the iPhone screen that says iPhone/Powerbeats/Loudspeaker and this defeats the whole idea of handsfree calling, any help or settings I need to change ? Thanks in advance totally frustrated as a HGV driver I cannot touch a phone driving as the law and safety is paramount.

Hello everyone. Yesterday apple released a firmware update for the PBP. The new firmware number should be 6B27. I am able to make calls hands free now and I am so excited! So far it is working like it used to. You can check the version under settings --> Bluetooth --> your connected device --> Version. If it says the old version 5B66, connect the beats and wait for the update to go through. It does it automatically at some random point. I plugged mine in and left it in its case with top open overnight, connected and it didn't update. When I started using the beats was when it updated. Hope this helps! Thank goodness they fixed it!

You’re not alone. I am having the same issue. I ask Siri to make a phone call (while wearing PBP) and the exact same issue you described above happens. I recently went to apple and they wiped my phone by doing a System Restore. This did NOT solve the issue. We unpaired my headphones, then paired a new set of PBP the rep pulled from a drawer. Same issue. My phone defaulted to Phone instead of PBP. We unpaired this new set and paired AirPods. They worked perfectly. It was determined there must be a software glitch with the new iOS 17 update. I have the iPhone 13 Mini w/latest software update. Very frustrating :(

I have the exact same issue as everyone on this thread. Tried a brand new pair in the apple store, same issue. Performed every reset on my phone and PBP. If you pair it to a phone with the previous or older operating systems, it works fine. Sent my PBP to apple and was told they couldn't duplicate the issue. I have called apple many times about the issue and they have told me that they escalated this to their engineers, but I have no word on it yet. There definitely needs to be a patch for this and is some kind of software issue.

It’s very strange, if I don’t use Siri and use the phone then it works immediately through the headset but voice dial I’m same as you, I’ve updated to 17.0.3 and it’s not solved it, sometimes it will say “calling….” In the headset but I’ve still quickly got to tap Speaker then back to Powerbeats, does the same with my Beats Pro wireless too, a simple thing but so frustrating and still not solved by Apple.

I’ve updated to 17.0.3 and the problem is still there, it’s gradually getting towards were it needs to be, if I say “Siri call ____” it will recite who I said in my Powerbeats but then it’s almost like the iPhone steps in, kicks bluetooths *** and says it’s boss and sends all communication to the phone leaving the headset a bystander, only when I tap (aggressively and frustratingly a few times) Powerbeats does it send the sound back to my headset.

Really suprised this has not been spotted by Apple themselves so far and fixed, I have messaged them but the routes they say to try do not work.

Mine is still not working properly, like a previous answer said, with WiFi it works as it’s supposed but move onto my own mobile service (O2 5G) and it’s back to not working as it should. It will say all the usual Siri stuff via the headset like “calling….” but then redirects back to the iPhone, cannot believe it’s still not been fixed by Apple or spotted.

Months down the line 😳 and I am still with the same problem so you are not alone, it works fine on WiFi but on cellular it does the same as yours, only work around I have is to manually open contacts and tap on who you want to call and it will work in headset then but it defeats the object that it’s hands free, I will tap who I need to speak to before I set off and then set off once connected, rubbish by Apple really is and cannot believe there are not more complaints.

Sorry, to simplify what I mean is, on ios before this new update, I would press voice dial…it would say “calling ___”….then the dial tone and you hear them answer, meaning you do not have to touch the phone. Now, you voice dial then wait til they answer (which you can’t hear if they have) then tap Powerbeats for the headset to take control, I dunno why they mess with things at Apple, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I have exactly the same problem, I’ve reset my powerbeats pro several times, turned my phone on and off and for one or two calls it seems fixed but then it reverts back to having to select powerbeats pro manually when the call connects. I don’t understand it I make the call by pressing the Siri button on my powerbeats but the call does not go through them.

I have the same issue, but with mine, my screen turns on in my pocket and presses the keypad or straight up ends the call. The headset I’m using is an LG TONE platinum with Harman Kardon tuning. It didn’t used to do this on iOS 16, but it seems iOS 17 ignores the “pocket check” and will turn the screen on randomly when making a call, or just invoking Siri.
