Where is the dock in watchOS 10?

What happened to DOCK, which gave me quick access to the 10 apps I selected and use most, in Watch OS 10? Also, how is pushing the side button easier or better than a quick swipe up to access the Control Panel?

So the swipe up gives you the apps, and pushing the Crown gives you the apps. Both give you the same function?

No.

  • Swipe up gives you the widget stack.
  • Pushing the crown once gives you the apps.
  • Pushing the crown twice gives you the app switcher (analogous to the Dock on previous versions).
  • Pushing the bottom below the crown brings up the Control Center.

AGREED!! Losing the dock drastically worsens my Apple Watch experience. I think the developers are out of touch with the actual users. It’s almost as if they’re now making changes just for the sake of making changes.

Also, using the crown to access my apps in list view, it always starts at the top! So if my apps are at the end of the alphabet, you have to scroll, scroll, scroll to get to them!

Ok that’s good info. That sorta works. It opens a list of recently opened apps, but there is still no way to manually add and configure apps like before using the “dock” option using the watch app. It just seems like something that worked great and was very useful before. Control center was an easy swipe before. No need to be a button. I mean this recently opened apps thing is an OK workaround for the dock feature being gone I suppose.

Click the crown once to enter grid view of the apps on your watch. If you are in list view, go to the bottom of the screen and select the dots which represent grid view.

Long press the app you want to move so that all of the apps start wiggling. Then you can move it to the top of the screen. This is the same as you would do on an iPhone and iPad.

I hope this helps.

In thinking more about this, if Apple had just named it “Favorites” instead of “Dock” it probably would have had even wider use. Still, there were ways to keep it. Assuming that Apple won’t back track, perhaps the easier ask is to request the the App “List” view be user adjustable as the grid view is. Many users just have too many devices to see and remember what each tiny icon represents. If the List view were adjustable, you could put your 10 favorites (or any number) at the top of the List View, and basically our Dock would be back.

The more I think about this, why aren't all three buttons customizable? You should be able to click and double click the Action, Control, and Crown six different customizations. And that should definitely include If This Then That logic. That would be what the premiere smart watch on the market would do.

Why don't you tell Apple what you think?

I don't see it as likely as Apple, though they've loosened up since Mr. Cook took over, has never been big on customization.

I have to agree that the missing dock is an issue for me. I can’t find my O2 sensing. Heart rate and voice app icons are almost identical, so of no use.

Have you considered switching to the list view for all the apps? While I don't find it as aesthetically pleasing, it is more efficient, especially for those apps with similar icons.

I also can’t seem to shut the watch down now.

As far as I know, it works the same way it has for a while. Press and hold on the button next to the digital crown. There will be a small power button in the upper right corner on the screen that appears with the emergency options. Tap that. I admit, I don't power the watch off frequently enough (have I ever?) to remember when or if this has changed.

Apple appears to have done a product-wide update to their whole catalog. It seems to be aimed at interoperability. However, I have a lot of broken appliances.. especially on Apple Homekit. Lights no longer working, my garage door control is broken, my apple TV has streaming services that are now acting buggy.

Keep submitting feedback.

The WHOLE reason I have an Apple Watch is because it lets me find my phone so easily with a shortcut in the DOCK!I

You were never able to use the Dock to locate your phone. That was done, and still is, through the Control Center. You can still get to that with one step: tap the button next to the Digital Crown. It's oval and almost flush with the bezel.

I suppose then all this hullabaloo will eventually die, and we'll learn to live with this shortcoming. And one never knows, Apple might revert in their next release, after all, they have had enough flak by now.

We really don't know if the pushback on the change is greater or less that the requests to make the change.

But, certainly add, your feedback:

I wonder why they did this? The dock button now brings up an useless access to settings.

Do you mean the side button? If so, while you may not need access to the Control Center, many people have been complaining that they can't find it now that it has moved. So, it does seem to be a popular feature.

I don’t need settings often enough to forfeit a button for it. This is a terrible new OS and UX!

Settings, meanwhile, continue to be accessed they way they always have been: through the Settings app. You can access all of your apps by pressing the Digital Crown once (just like before).
