iPhone call history shared between devices after iOS 17 Update

on my primary device I have iCloud -> contacts turned off, also handoff is turned off on both devices.

Before iOS 17.0, each of my 2 devices has its private call log & contacts.

After iOS 17.0 on both devices, I started to see the call history of both devices on my primary device.

Since the update, I have attempted all the techniques to stop the call log from my husband's phone appearing on my phone. It is very annoying not to be able to look at your previous calls to determine who called you instantly without questioning whether the number called you or your husband. I hope that Apple listens and is able to correct whatever was turned on or at least allow us to disable call logs from other devices.

Apple makes it clear in the link, which has been posted multiple times about why each person needs their own unique Apple ID that doing so on multiple devices makes them be seen as one device. I would fully expect that document to soon be updated to include call logs/voicemail messages, which would make it abundantly clear Apple intended this change and isn't planning to change it. In fact, iOS 17 was released in September, and in a few days it will be January. And these posts started soon after, with multiple iOS updates released since 17 rolled out. And yet, Apple has not done anything with this. This alone should give people a clue Apple doesn't see this as an issue. And people have called Apple and have been told this is the way they intended this to work, regardless if it didn't before iOS 17.

I get you're not happy with this. I'll remind you we are all users here and we didn't make this change in iOS 17, so arguing with us (who keep telling you the one way to fix this is stop sharing an Apple ID) is pointless. Share your displeasure with Apple. They are the ones who made the decision to merge call longs in iOS 17. Not one person here did this.

Thank you for posting this. This is exactly what I believe is the case and your post proves I am right. It’s a bug in iOS 17+. My call logs and visual voicemail suddenly started syncing between my 2 iPhones that are sharing one Apple ID. Both my iPhones have their own completely different cell #’s.

This has to be a bug and nothing else makes sense.

By the way, one has to wonder how much trouble this likely caused for many couples sharing one Apple ID.

I wanted to share my case as well.

Facts as of 1/2/2024 11:00 AM:
iOS Verion 17.2.1 on iPhone 14 Pro Me iPhone 15 Pro Wife running iOS 17.1.1
iCloud Drive Off both iPhones
iCloud Phone Off both iPhones
iCloud Contacts Off both iPhones
Live Voice Mail Off both iPhones

As of 11:11 I am receiving my wife's missed calls and voice mails. There is a "clue" when I call my wife's cell number the photo associated with my Apple ID profile is displayed. This suggests the issue may be related to shared Apple IDs vs iCloud accounts.

Not "may." It IS 100% related to shared IDs, period.

if no one has figured this out, I was able to fix it on mine. Go to Icloud, under apps using ICloud, click show all, and toggle off Phone. Do this for all devices.

That won't work long term. Initially, it will. But within a day your call logs will sill be merged as MANY have tried this and thought they solved it only to learn they didn't. The ONLY way to stop this if you don't want to share call logs is to NOT share an Apple ID. Report back in a couple days and you'll be admitting it didn't work ultimately.

Caper1111 posted a solution multiple times in this thread. It’s a bandaid that result in a frequent reminder that not everything is being sync’s but it works for both those sharing an ID and those not sharing an ID.

It's not a good solution nor a good bandaid. And when people lose things because they were no longer syncing anything, they'll be upset. I know you just don't want to admit it, but the ONLY true solution is to STOP sharing an Apple ID. OR......accept merged call logs/voicemail messages.

Totally agree - this update has caused so many issues. Along with this issue, since the upgrade many of the login info has changed on many of our apps. We have 3 phones on the family plan. For Example, my Southwest and Delta app changed to my son's login info on my phone and another example, my wife's Chix fil a app changed to my user name on her phone. This is just to name a few.
It doesn't seem like anything was kept separate and many were randomly changed. It is a pain to have to go in and change everything. Has this happened to any one else?

Your wife does not have her phone, your wife has your phone.

Your son does not have his phone, your son has your phone.

Your iPhone.

Not theirs.

Yours.

Your list of what gets shared is just a few of the ways that context is shared within an Apple ID.

Any word from her on a fix? Ours just updated and it’s very annoying, we run a business using both phones but also have kids and we never know who’s calling which one of us.

Ask one of the kids to fix this configuration for you. Pay them to fix this. It’s not particularly difficult to fix, either.

It’ll take an hour at most, if the currently-collided folks are not too fussed about the starting point for each Apple ID.

Set up family sharing, and an Apple ID for each person.

Maybe also a business Apple ID and a personal ID.

Once the corrected configuration is established, each person can also selectively enable all of what is shut off in this current collided-data configuration, which is very useful when anyone has multiple devices associated with their personal Apple ID.

Your call logs and voicemail may be merged, but only the number on the phone which is called should ring. If both phones are ringing at the same time, you have something set up wrong. Open the Settings app. Scan down to Phone and tap it. Make sure Calls on Other Devices is off.

Waiting for a fix which is likely never going to come will ultimately lead to frustration. The solution has been suggested many many times here. Either accept merged calls or separate your Apple ID's.

No you can't. Downgrading has never been supported. If you are waiting for Apple to figure out this out, you're likely going to be waiting for a very long time. This happened with iOS 17 released in September 2023. It's close to the end of January and Apple has released a LOT of updates since iOS 17 was released. And not one of them has changed this. Apple clearly doesn't see this an not working the way they intended it to work.
