iPhone call history shared between devices after iOS 17 Update

on my primary device I have iCloud -> contacts turned off, also handoff is turned off on both devices.

Before iOS 17.0, each of my 2 devices has its private call log & contacts.

After iOS 17.0 on both devices, I started to see the call history of both devices on my primary device.

I carry 2 iPhones with the same Apple id since ages, and I don’t want to get confused by which phone initiated personal or business calls.

Its unreasonable to maintain more than one Apple ID after all of this years.

I already reported a bug to Apple. And I came here to see if anyone else noticed/fixed this.

It's not a bug. If you carry two phones – one for work, and one for personal use – for "security" reasons, then it stands to follow that you should "firewall" your accounts and have two Apple ID accounts, as well.

The call history sharing might be new, but there is all sorts of other sharing linked to having the same Apple ID. Sharing that's been around for a long time. E.g., keychain passwords, photos, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, and files on iCloud Drive.

iMessages are also linked to your Apple ID, whether you use "Messages in iCloud" or not.

My senior citizen parents are using the same apple id as they don't know how to access id's etc. now the calls I am receiving the same is showing in my parents phone, my missed calls are showing in my parents phone and they are giving them call back by thinking that they missed somone's call. How come apple belives that this isn't an issue or how apple intended to work it like this way by sharing your call details with other devices? There must be some settings or some sollution regarding the same. Even i have done all the resolution regarding this by turning off icloud drive, contants in icloud as well as airplay and handoff, even though it is sharing the same.

Apple intends an Apple ID to be used by one person. The solution to your problem is for your parents to each have their own Apple ID.

Please don't make the ageist assumption that your parents can't learn how to do something because they are "senior citizens". The majority of the long time voluteers here are "senior citizens". Using an iPhone doesn't change significantly with a different Apple ID. And, as they will stop having the confusion engendered by sharing one, it may, in fact be easier.

And if you look up a few posts, you'll see where someone else spoke with Apple Support, who told them this is exactly how its supposed to work and the ONLY way to separate the call logs is to stop sharing an Apple ID.

Do as you wish, but you'll likely be waiting forever for Apple to do anything about this as it's clear this is by design from Apple.

Your choice.

Hey guys,

I came here to find an answer to the question posted, but did not see any solutions. I ended up contacting support and they came up with a solution for me. I don’t know if it will work for you guys but here it goes…

if you have other devices, check to see if they have the same settings you want for the calls (FaceTime) and text distribution between all devices. If it’s not on, turn it on and check it. I ended up deactivating FaceTime and text from the other devices and that seemed to have resolved the issue. Good luck and have a blessed holiday season!

It's NOT going to be fixed as Apple clearly does NOT believe this is behavior which needs to be fixed. The ONLY sure way to stop sharing call logs and voicemail messages is to STOP sharing an Apple ID. That's the ONLY solution.

It most likely will not be fixed as Apple recommends the each user needs to have their own Apple ID and what you are seeing is the expected behavior of a shared ID. The people that are frustrated by this just need to follow the recommendation. It is not that difficult and Family Sharing can be set up if you want to share apps or subscriptions.

Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID - Apple Support

1. Well said.
it is obvious to many Apple customers that either:
There is a bug in the icloud functionality or
2. The ‘Phone’ app slider being turned off in iCloud has a bug or
3. Both 1. and 2. above.

Nope. There's NO bug. This is how Apple intends it to work. And waiting for Apple to fix what they don't believe is broken, won't get you anywhere.

There is ONLY one sure to stop the shared call logs if they bother you. STOP SHARING AN APPLE ID.

I am on the phone right now with a Senior Advisor in Apple and she says this is a known problem, that you are definitely supposed to be able to keep call history separate between two phones. Engineers are working on it and she's going to keep me in the loop with updates until it is resolved.

So, please stop saying it's working the way it is supposed to because it is not.

She said, in no uncertain terms, that you can use the same Apple ID on 2 phones- each with a different phone number- and have call histories be kept separate.

I also have a ticket with Apple Senior folks that has been submitted to engineering. The bug is that the phone toggle for iCloud is NOT working. If and when this is fixed ( I was told it may be a few weeks) then phone logs should not be duplicated. I agree that apple wants us to all have separate ids but this is not the issue. The iCloud phone toggle not working is the issue.

Thanks for replying.

few years ago I looked for a way to stop sharing call history between same Apple ID Devices, and I learned that if I turn off contacts sync on my device it will stop sharing the call log, so I did that and it was all good since iOS 13, but now it is different

if users want to share call history, they can turn on iCloud contacts sync.

Apparently, that is not the way Apple sees it. Apple seems largely unconcerned if changes they make cause workarounds for sharing Apple IDs to stop working. Their stance has been quite clear that Apple IDs are intended to be used by one person only.

You can certainly let them know your thoughts here:

But, I seriously don't expect this to change.

Right or Wrong doesn't make a difference. It's how Apple has chosen to implement this and the ONLY people complaining about it are people who share the same Apple ID. Apple is making it as clear as they possibly can that sharing an Apple ID is not recommended. It doesn't mean people can't share an Apple ID. But if they do, this is going to be how it works and people either live with it or stop sharing an Apple ID.
