iPhone call history shared between devices after iOS 17 Update

on my primary device I have iCloud -> contacts turned off, also handoff is turned off on both devices.

Before iOS 17.0, each of my 2 devices has its private call log & contacts.

After iOS 17.0 on both devices, I started to see the call history of both devices on my primary device.

I carry 2 iPhones with the same Apple id since ages, and I don’t want to get confused by which phone initiated personal or business calls.

Its unreasonable to maintain more than one Apple ID after all of this years.

I already reported a bug to Apple. And I came here to see if anyone else noticed/fixed this.

It's not a bug. If you carry two phones – one for work, and one for personal use – for "security" reasons, then it stands to follow that you should "firewall" your accounts and have two Apple ID accounts, as well.

The call history sharing might be new, but there is all sorts of other sharing linked to having the same Apple ID. Sharing that's been around for a long time. E.g., keychain passwords, photos, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, and files on iCloud Drive.

iMessages are also linked to your Apple ID, whether you use "Messages in iCloud" or not.

While it was clear in the update that it was only for iPhone 15 - iOS17.02 installed on both my phones over night - I think it might have fixed the issue.

Yesterday evening - I put my 2nd phone back on the single Apple ID. Got everything working correctly again - except the shared call log issue. Within an hour, all the saved voice mails from phone 1 appeared on phone 2.

Overnight, iOS17.02 installed on both phones. Now the saved voice mails are GONE from phone 2 but still exist on phone 1. YEAH!!!! While not a true test, 3 phone calls on phone 1 do not show on phone 2 today. Maybe I need to say "yet", but they were showing up within minutes and it has been 2+ hours. I have hope!!!

What I believe is happening is as follows. As you might know, from iOS 17, turning off iCloud Drive no longer impacts 3rd party apps that use CloudKit syncing. Further on, I think that call logs (which I’m assuming were a part of iCloud drive sync - because disabling it stopped the syncing) were also moved outside iCloud drive, together with the other apps - so it can now sync regardless of the iCloud Drive state.

But unfortunately, we don’t get a switch to turn the sync off for them (the “Phone” you see in “Apps that use iCloud” is just for voicemail sync between devices, as someone discovered, so not for actual calls log).

Crazy stuff from Apple, dont see any problem ? its a privacy issue .

No, it's not a privacy issue is you use the same Apple ID on more than one iPhone. That's a choice you made and as far as Apple servers are concerned it's all one device. It would be a privacy issue if you started seeing the call logs of others users who do not have your Apple ID.

It was easy, once you deselected that you didn’t want messages etc to go to all devices on your ID, call logs did not show up on all devices. Now the same procedure does not work with the IOS 17.

I can stop all other syncing between devices but the call logs. So yes this is a bug, and Apple told me that this is a known problem that they are working on resolving. They Could of been telling what I wanted to hear as well.

It sounds like the OP is sharing an Apple ID with his or her parents. I can't think of any upside to that.

Even if the parents do not mind sharing their passwords so that the OP can help to manage their settings for them, they need to be on a different Apple ID, or IDs, than the OP.

Correction: When I wrote 'the OP', I should have written 'tanurag' (the "OP" of this particular subthread). That person's case (sharing one Apple ID between three individuals living in two households) is not the same as the OP's case (sharing one Apple ID between a business phone and a personal phone).

Apologies if writing 'the OP' instead of 'tanurag' caused any confusion.

Yes but the thing is, I can own 2 iphones, one private and one for business. I don't want them to share Call history but I have the right to use my apps and other thing on both of them since I am the owner.

You are the owner of the physical device. You do not, however, own any of the software on it. You only have a license to use iOS. And, as the owner, Apple retains the right to make changes. You can be okay with that or hate it, but it remains an established legal precedent.

If you want to share apps across two phones but do not want to share personal data, create a second Apple ID and set up Family Sharing. Using your personal Apple ID for business purposes has all sorts of downsides.

This behaviour was introduced with iOS 17. Of course Apple can make changes.

People have been complaining about this particular issue for well over a year, probably longer. But the point isn't when it happened. The point is that because Apple doesn't support the sharing of Apple IDs, they do not take that into consideration when they make other changes. With every update in iOS, some workaround that made it feasible to share Apple IDs breaks.

False. We do not "all acknowledge" any such thing.

It is working as designed.

The "solution" is to change your behavior. i.e. stop sharing an ID.

The purpose of this forum is to ask other users how to questions. Since no user here has any way for you to not have your call history shared between devices using the same Apple ID, there is nothing anyone here can offer you. This is not a discussion forum. It is a support forum to solve technical issues, which other users can help you fix. No one here can do anything about this.

If you want to argue your point on this subject, you need to argue it with the only entity who can help you with it and that is Apple directly.

Feel free to share your thoughts with Apple here --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting you should be happy about this change Apple made. Nor am I suggesting you shouldn't tell Apple what you think. I am saying telling Apple what you think they should do here on this user to user only forum, gets you nothing at all.

Soooo, is it Apple doesn’t want us sharing IDs with others,

Do whatever you want.

An Apple ID will, however, share data among all devices logged into that Apple ID.

The mechanism to enable this sharing and to keep this data separate from others is the Apple ID.

If you do want to share data with others, sharing an Apple ID is an excellent way to share all of your data with others.

or that they don’t want us using them on more than one device?

One Apple ID works just fine across multiple devices used by the same person, including working fine for someone using multiple iPhones. You can share cut-and-paste data across devices, extend displays, transfer photos, have your passwords available across multiple devices, everything.

What doesn’t work quite so fine is sharing an Apple ID among multiple people, or sharing an Apple ID across disparate roles; a work iPhone with work data with a personal device with personal data.

if you have other devices, check to see if they have the same settings you want for the calls (FaceTime) and text distribution between all devices. If it’s not on, turn it on and check it. I ended up deactivating FaceTime and text from the other devices and that seemed to have resolved the issue.

Other people have noted that that works for a little while then stops. The only surefire way to resolve the issue is to stop sharing an Apple ID.

I find it interesting that there is a few that keep insisting that this is not a problem and keep stirring the pot because they are the minority of the users. This will probably get deleted but users will see it in their email.

Apple likes to make things complicated, like this forum, since it got updated its a pain to navigate and the posts are not in order anymore.

The solution I found was simple for us who have two phones for work and personal, log out of your ID on your work phone, the syncing will stop. I have not had a call log sync.

If you want to add an app, log back in.

IMO there is no point in having a apple ID for the second work phone, what other data is Apple storing on their servers without users knowledge. I won’t even allow diagnostics info to be sent and I have it toggled off, maybe it is doing it anyway.
