Calendar widget on Mac won't refresh

My calendar widget on my homepage will not update with the time or day. The calendar app itself shows the correct date and time, but the widget will not refresh. I have deleted the widget and put a new one in but that will not fix the problem. My calendar app also refreshes every 30 minutes and that does not seem to change anything with the widget.

I was able to reset it by doing a few things:

  • Quit the Calendar app
  • Open the `Activity Monitor` app, while on the `CPU` tab, search for `CalendarWidgetExtension` and force quit the process
  • Reopen Calendar app

After a minute it should update. I sometimes also have to move the widget up/down and then move it back into place but I'm not sure if that's just me being impatient or not. HTH, YMMV.

This is a longstanding bug and I can't believe it's still around given the Calendar extension is really only useful if it's real time... I use this to keep an eye on upcoming meetings and it's not useful if I can't trust it.

It's probably worth pointing out that I use google calendar as the backing service so it could be a weird integration bug with that service. I'm sure this isn't exactly a rare edge case though.
