Apple tvOS 17 No Sound

I have an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) connected to a Samsung TV that pushes audio out through a Sonos sound system. It was working fine earlier today. I upgraded the tv OS to v17.0. Now, several apps (e.g., Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, etc.) do not provide any audio while the YouTube TV and YouTube apps functions normally. I have 1) rebooted and 2) changed the audio format to a different setting. Any suggestions?

jees, I just came upon this thread. just posted a similar problem.

I've isolated it to dolby 5.1 and tvOS 17. just started having this problem so I suspect 17 broke something.

forcing everything to stereo audio format seems to be a workaround. after switching back to 5.1 it seems to work..... for a while... then it fails again.

dolby 5.1 will just go silent after a while. if I leave it in stereo format I have no problems. so that may explain why some sources work since not all are doing 5.1 or atmos.

affects all streams (music, tv+, Hulu, ...) that output 5.1 audio

On with Apple Support. They had me go to Settings on my Samsung TV -> General -> external device manager -> Input Signal Plus and un-check the input that Apple TV is on. This did not work.

I then “reset and update” my Apple TV back to factory settings. That did not work immediately. While we were on the phone (about 20 mins in) it just started working randomly. It’s delayed for sure compared to the way it was. Like i’ll open an app and audio takes like 1.5s to come in. At least it works.

I am not a fan of Apple support. Lot of back and forth. Like it’s not our job as consumers to troubleshoot these things. It’s their job to make products that work correctly and troubleshoot reported issues. We are busy.

I am having the same issue with my Bose Soundbar 900. Switching any streaming app or Tv source breaks the eARC connection. Either, I have to tell the TV to re-establish the eARC connection or yank the power to everything. This started right after I upgraded to IOS17. Oh, and my Bass module started bunging, too. That has since subsided, because I yanked the power. Way to go Apple.

Definite issues with tvOS 17. Maybe I’m one of the few that still use multiple room audio, but the upgrade totally locked up my full network of ATV 4K’s from receiving audio from both iTunes and Apple Music Preview from my PC’s. I proved it by hooking up a 4th gen HD ATV that still had tvOS 16 installed. Absolutely no issues. I escalated to Apple CS and they seem to be aware of the multiple bugs with the latest release. I wouldn’t mind so much if I could restore back to tvOS 16, but as we all know that’s not really an option. Hopefully, they work some of this stuff out with the next release. Terribly frustrating.

It's wedging something on the Samsung TVs.

I'm running the 65" Class Q90R QLED Smart 4K UHD TV (2019) -- QN65Q90RAF

Yesterday I configured a smart plug on the TV outlet so that I can toggle the wall power to it from my iPhone.

Powering off only the TV completely for 15-20 seconds corrects the issue until it recurs.

This is honestly making me consider buying another 4k streaming device as a backup to use until this is corrected. Never an issue with any content right up until this update. Very frustrating....

I've given up on trying to fix this issue by toggling from Best Audio (Atmos-enabled) to 5.1 or stereo and back. I put two HomePod minis in front of my TV, and when I start up my system, I set my Yamaha CX-A5100 preamp to a fairly loud volume. Then I use the tvOS control center to select the HomePod minis as well as keeping the main speakers "on".

It can take anywhere up to a half an hour before the sound suddenly becomes noticeably louder, which is the sign that the Apple TV has started transmitting sound to the main system again, and I can turn off the HomePod minis. Until the next day, that is.

OK community, I ask you this....when the audio stops, is your Apple TV warm or hot? My audio has gone in and out (e.g., after watching a movie or a football game, and then switching to a different piece of streaming content - regardless of app), and my hypothesis is there is something in how tvOS 17 regulates the power. When my Apple TV is warm or hot, the audio stops. After it cools down, I get audio. Anyone else?

I had the exact same thing yesterday, but prior to me upgrading to IOS17. No sound on any apps from Apple TV, but sound worked on Samsung TV apps (meaning, Hulu on Apple TV had no sound, Hulu app on my smart TV did have sound). I updated to IOS17 and problem persisted.

I talked to Apple Support twice, first time said it was a known issue with my Sonos, but Sonos support ran a diagnostic and there was no issue, and the second Apple Support Call we were able to get sound to my airpods, but not output to the speaker. We both thought I had a bad soundcard and I scheduled a Genius bar appointment for today. Before walking out the door, I tried Apple TV again and works fine. Looks like it was a one day blip.
