Apple tvOS 17 No Sound

I have an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) connected to a Samsung TV that pushes audio out through a Sonos sound system. It was working fine earlier today. I upgraded the tv OS to v17.0. Now, several apps (e.g., Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, etc.) do not provide any audio while the YouTube TV and YouTube apps functions normally. I have 1) rebooted and 2) changed the audio format to a different setting. Any suggestions?

jees, I just came upon this thread. just posted a similar problem.

I've isolated it to dolby 5.1 and tvOS 17. just started having this problem so I suspect 17 broke something.

forcing everything to stereo audio format seems to be a workaround. after switching back to 5.1 it seems to work..... for a while... then it fails again.

dolby 5.1 will just go silent after a while. if I leave it in stereo format I have no problems. so that may explain why some sources work since not all are doing 5.1 or atmos.

affects all streams (music, tv+, Hulu, ...) that output 5.1 audio

So I have a similar issue. Sony TV, Sonos Soundbar and Apple TV 4K using eARC. No audio issue until upgrading to 17.0 then I lose the ability to change volume with the Apple Remote. It looks like it is changing on the screen but it will not change the actual volume. For me in settings > remote it defaults to Auto. I found that if I manually change to TV via IR it resolves the issue for a few hours or until I change multiple apps. I have seen some strange behavior where the selection will go back and forth between auto and TV via IR very quickly like in a feedback loop, but I can usually get it back to TV via IR and get it working again. I genuinely hope it is an OS problem and is addressed in an update. It’s pretty annoying.

I spoke too soon. There have been a couple times since I thought I fixed this where my sound once again stopped working. And so far the only way to fix it is to power cycle the TV. It's hard to say what caused the sound to go out again. I was cleaning and unplugging cables, that's about it. Right now it's working again. My TV is an old LG, like 12 years old. But I bought a new Apple TV 4K in 2020, hooked it up to this LG, never had any issue. That lasted a few years until I moved and switch things around. This past week, I once again hooked up the same Apple TV to this old LG, and noticed the sound issues. Luckily Apple TV can connect to soundbar over bluetooth as a backup.

Ok, so this is the set up:

  1. Apple TV is connected to the home network via WiFi
  2. Apple TV has the HDMI out that plugs into the Samsung TV
  3. the audio from the Samsung TV is using the HDMI (ARC) port the to connect to my Sonos Beam

I applied the tvOS 17 update, and half of the apps on the Apple TV had no audio. After 30 minutes of troubleshooting (e.g, reboot everything, change audio settings on the Apple TV, shut down and unplug/replug everything, etc.), I had the same results and went to bed frustrated.

I did note that my Apple TV was very warm.

The next day, I turned everything on and it worked. I do not know what changed, but it now works.

I’ve been experiencing this too.

I’ve been a long time apple TV box user…. From first gen to current gen (whatever it is right now). I even got this new gen cause I thought the last gen was the problem with regards to audio. But even with the latest apple tv box we experiencing this audio problem. Its not the hdmi cable and its not the receiver. You know how I know??? Cause you can hear the little blips when scrolling through the main menu and the settings… the only thing we can’t hear is the audio from the series or movies.

Just bought a new AppleTV last week. It worked just fine then update to 17.4 a couple days ago. Now low intermittent sound. Old one that I moved to the other room works great. Won’t update that one now.

Switched to the Apple app installed on the Samsung tv and no issues but without the great 4k. Definitely an AppleTV issue. Possibly a return?!?
