Apple tvOS 17 No Sound

I have an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) connected to a Samsung TV that pushes audio out through a Sonos sound system. It was working fine earlier today. I upgraded the tv OS to v17.0. Now, several apps (e.g., Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, etc.) do not provide any audio while the YouTube TV and YouTube apps functions normally. I have 1) rebooted and 2) changed the audio format to a different setting. Any suggestions?

jees, I just came upon this thread. just posted a similar problem.


I've isolated it to dolby 5.1 and tvOS 17. just started having this problem so I suspect 17 broke something.


forcing everything to stereo audio format seems to be a workaround. after switching back to 5.1 it seems to work..... for a while... then it fails again.


dolby 5.1 will just go silent after a while. if I leave it in stereo format I have no problems. so that may explain why some sources work since not all are doing 5.1 or atmos.


affects all streams (music, tv+, Hulu, ...) that output 5.1 audio

How do we get Apple Support to actually look at this and issue a software update.


my setup is AppleTV4k to my Samsung TV, Samsung TV to sound bar.


worked perfectly until os17. Now sound is very delayed when moving over anpps and apps like Apple TV, Netflix, YouTube, don’t work. Oddly Hulu works.


it seems Apple TV does get hot and after being off for a few hours Apple TV and Netflix will work but then stop working and sound delayed again.


tried resets, and all the normal stuff. No luck.


yesterday morning worked great, upgrade to os17 and stopped.


Apple Support please patch this.

I was on phone with them for over hour and half. Reset my Apple TV twice; reset my TV once. New HDMI cable, new port on TV and they escalated me to a “Senior Support Specialist” who just reiterated what the other support people told me.


I got the gist they have other fish to fry. My TV also works intermittently. I’m just not updating my other Apple TVs for a while.

Not solved but I have an observation. I have Samsung tv. Sonos arc. Appletv 4k. I’ve had issues with no sound on SOME apps (frequently YouTube and YouTube tv) and it’s been dif apps at dif times. Frustrating. I’ve rebooted each device individually and tested. It’s the tv. I’m going to dig further into Samsung settings. My 2 cents. Stay tuned.

my situation is even worse. I get crickets in 5.1 or atmos mode. stereo is the only mode that works. going through an Onkyo receiver. not being an expert on any of this.... but do you think that the TV is putting out an audio signal that cannot be interpreted properly by any of our receivers/soundbars? interesting that you get a silent center channel while others get no sound at all. I wonder if some receivers would chose to mute all of the channels in that case.


if any help, I first noticed this with Apple Music. guessing that some of the content there is 5.1 or atmos.

Hey guys

Tonight I have no sound at all in all apps after starting a show on Netflix

each time I restart the Apple TV I have the sound and then after starting a show on an app, no sound

i even try to reset the Apple TV and it’s not working ..

im not using any bar sound just the sound of my TV everything was working fine until tonight …
