Your apple pencil does not work with you new ios 17 software.

I do not understand why apple would put out a software that would not work with their own accessory devices. I have a apple pencil 2 with an ipad 12.9 pro. I have been using my apple pencil with my ipad with NO problems since I purchased the ipad. I upgraded my ios software and now my pencil does not work. It will connect and charge, but with not interact with the ipad. They really need to fix this problem with the software.

For much newer design iPad models, without a Home button, try the new simple hard reset/forced restart procedure for the new 2018-2022 iPad Pros, 2020/21 iPad Air 4 and 5, the 2021 iPad Mini 6 and the new 2022, 10th gen base models,

1. Press and release the volume button closest to the top Power button

2. Then immediately ( and quickly ) press and release the volume button farthest from the top Power button.

3. Then, press and hold the top single sleep/wake/power button You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018-2022 iPad will boot up completely to the iPad’s Lock screen.

Not working here as well. So annoying

Working okay here. If you have un-paired and re-paired, contact Apple Support.

Possibilities here range from a problem with a specific Pencil, an exhausted or failed battery, a problem with the iPad, or a problem with iPadOS.

Based solely on the paucity of Pencil umbrage posted around here, that tends to imply some more specific issue with the particular configuration here.

Contact Apple Support.

What you bought is supposed to work.

Apple usually runs diagnostics for free, and the chat or call is free.

And if there are issues with iPadOS, Apple usually knows about them.

Probably the worst that happens here is learning this iPad needs a repair or replacement, or the Pencil needs replacement, and you then get to decide how to handle that.

I’ve been having a similar issue since iOS 17. Mine is an iPad Pro 12” (4th Gen) and I have a 2nd Gen Apple Pencil. I’m continually running into issues where the Apple Pencil interacts with the iPad incorrectly. Things like brush strokes in art programs cutting off randomly, pressure sensitivity not working at all or working incorrectly and inconsistently, tilt sensitivity also behaving incorrectly, and the Apple Pencil randomly disconnecting and refusing to reconnect.

I've done the forget device, re-pair, hard reset, reattach/ re-place the nib shtick several times, and while sometimes it works after a few attempts, recently it’s been working less and less. So much so that now, after hard reseting, forgetting and attempting to re-pair the apple pencil to the iPad, it simply will not connect. The little “Apple Pencil” bubble still pops up when I attach the pencil to the magnetic connecter, but it will not appear in the bluetooth menu.

I've not had any of these issues before iOS 17. I even bought an artist glove suspecting that my hand on the screen might have been the problem, but no luck. Buying a new Apple Pencil isn't really on the table for me right now, and to be honest I’m not entirely sure that would solve the issue. Since after reading lot of other comments it seems like the new update is the cause, not the Apple Pencil itself.

Besides, I shouldn't have to bear the burden of buying a new $100 Apple Pencil just because the software devs didn't do enough bug tests to catch something as catastrophic as an issue making the software being completely incompatible with one of their best selling accessories.

it’s April 10th 2024, just updated my iPad Air 4th gen to iOS 17.4.1 wishing my Apple Pencil would now work. But with no luck, it’s connecting for a few seconds then would disconnect again. I tried turning off my bluetooth unpairing and then pairing again my pencil 2, 100% charged but still no lock. i do hope Apple would fix this problem. it’ll just make the pencil disposable.

Try reseting your iPad's Network Settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings

I have tried the above. My warranty is not valid anymore so I don’t think the Apple support will help me.

So to confirm, you have attempted a charge, have performed an un-pair, then forced restart, have re-paired, have contacted Apple Support, and have then logged feedback?

If so, you have done what you can with what you have,

There’s potentially a bug in iPadOS here, or your iPad is faulty, your Pencil battery is depleted, or the Pencil is bricked.

None of which csn be addressed here.

Next step is trying the Pencil on some other iPad Pro elsewhere, and probably then a repair discussion with Apple.

Highly doutful.

The 2017, 2nd Gen, 12.9 inch iPad Pro is still supported and still works with the 1st gen Apple Pencil.

Why not avail yourself of using the Support link, at the upper right hand side of these support community Webpages to either chat with Apple support directly or make an appointment with your nearest Apple Store or Apple authorised service provider ( AASP ) to have a free diagnosis of your iPad Pro and options presented to you.

Best Buy Geek Squad is not very reliable or knowledgeable, these days, as Best Buy seems to be always on the verge of bankruptcy.

Just because they’re selling them doesn’t mean they’ll work. Even if I bought a new Apple Pencil 1 it won’t work on the iPad Pro 10.5 model. They intentionally put software that will make the pencil stop working.

That would usually mean an issue with the Apple Pencil 1st generation, or potentially with the iPad Pro itself.

Supported configurations: Apple Pencil compatibility - Apple Support

As a new Apple Pencil purchase has a warranty from Apple, contact Apple Support.

If this is an older Pencil purchased used, it’s quite possible the Pencil was damaged, or its battery has been depleted, potentially irrevocably.

If deprecation were true, we’d be awash in reports and questions and complaints.

iPad Pro 11" Gen 3 w/256GB, wifi only - Pencil would not connect or charge after updating to 17. All other Bluetooth devices worked and connected fine. Genius Bar at store worked on it for an hour - no joy. Pencil was fine - charged on the other iPads in store. They gave me a replacement, I've left it at v16, everything's good.

I don't think I will update to 17 until they sort this out.
