Your apple pencil does not work with you new ios 17 software.

Now here’s a head scratcher. I just went from Sweden to Thailand on a holiday. The iPad and pencil has worked flawlessly since I landed. In Sweden it was basically unusable, but in Thailand it work. There’s no explanation for this. Did Apple sneak out some firmware for the pen when I was in midair (October 11-12)?!

I can’t explain this. I might just as well stay in Thailand and not go back to Sweden! 😅

Reboots, soft or hard, and disconnecting pencil and reconnecting don’t work.

My pencil worked fine with the old iPad OS 16 and even 17.0 and 17.0.1.

Can we go backward to an iPad OS that worked. An Apple Pencil is a **** of an expensive paperweight.

New iOS 17 update makes using your Apple Pencil 1 obsolete and drawing on older generation tablets impossible. Which means I’ll have to replace a whole tablet and get a new Apple Pencil? This was confirmed to me by geek squad.

False. iOS 17 does not obsolete Pencil first gen.

Apple is presently actively selling three Pencil models, including 1st gen: Apple Pencil - Apple

Just because they’re selling them doesn’t mean they’ll work. Even if I bought a new Apple Pencil 1 it won’t work on the iPad Pro 10.5 model. They intentionally put software that will make the pencil stop working.

For how long did you use the Pencil 2nd gen with iPad Pro 12.9” 3rd gen? Just fiddling around with it for a few minutes doesn’t prove anything. Mine can work too for a while.

Assuming that everyone’s pencil 2nd gen or iPad Pro 3rd gen magically broke as iOS 17.0.2 was released is as far fetched as thinking hitting the pencil hard on a table will fix this.

This is software related and Apple needs to fix it.

My Apple Pencil was working perfectly I’m my iPad until I did the recent update. It will now not pair. Please fix this problem and give a solution. I unpaired and now it doesn’t even recognize the pencil.

On my email, you replied with. “This seems like the battery is depleted or the batter may have failed,” WRONG! Whoever is answering these questions do not know anything. I did some other things and finally my pencil started working again. Apple doesn’t seem to know what they’re doing with their updates or how to solve problems!

I have an iPad Air and my iPad updated without asking just last night. Ever since my pencil gen 2 refuses to connect, charge, pair, etc. I tried hard reset, resetting network settings, forgetting the pencil, etc. and now it won’t even show up to be paired in the first place. I’m so livid right now.

iPad 12.9 (6th Gen) here, running iOS 16.7.2, and My Apple Pencil was working all morning when suddenly mid-use it started acting funny.

By “funny” I mean: it would hover and be recognized by the iPad but no tap feature worked. Apps swell when I hover over them, but will not open if I tap them.

• I unpaired
• hard reset

…no dice!

• updated to iOS 17.1.2
• unpaired again
• hard reset again

…still nothing!

However I did try the pencil on another device running 16.5.1 - and it works (so it’s not the pencil)

Is this just a bug in the iOS that needs to be fixed? (I find it weird that it happened randomly before the update even occurred.)

Sadly I’ve done all of the above (before calling Apple support) then I called Apple support and they told me to try what I’ve already tried.

It really is quite strange. It just feels like the connection is half way there.

Thanks MrHoffman. Just for fun, to add to the confusion I need to explain further:

• my Apple Pencil is not working on my iPad (which has been restarted, etc)
• however my pencil does work on my wife’s iPad
• And her Apple Pencil works on my iPad

So… somehow only MY Pencil doesn’t work on MY iPad hahaha I’m going to check myself into a looney bin!

We were going to swap pencils but my pencil has a special nib on the end (one that my wife does not like) so I said “no problem” let me put your nib, on my pencil (since my pencil works on her iPad) but when I swap the nib the pencil then does not work on her iPad. It only works with MY nib (the one she doesn’t like)… there is no consistency here and I’m at a loss lol.

I have an Apple Pencil first generation that worked fine with iPad ninth generation. It is now not working on iOS 17.2 despite trying all related help topics on re-pairing. I am considering buying a new Apple Pencil first generation thinking current one just bit the dust. Am I correct that is not the solution and must by a new iPad that supports a later generation pencil?!?

Same however I do not have another device that I can test my apple pen on. It links to my ipad pro 12.9 like it did before. ITt will not write or do anything other than charge and link. I dropped it and thought I might have broken it so I ordered a new one. I will be extremely upset if I order a new one to find out it was the software all along.

I’ve just updated to 17.3 and my 2nd Gen pencil now doesn’t work! Same symptoms as above, simply won’t appear in Bluetooth. I’ve tried everything other than a complete wipe of the iPad. Still works on my partners iPad who’s still on 17.2!
