Memojis disappeared after iOS 17 upgrade

I just upgraded to iOS 17 and now my memojis have all disappeared. I checked for how to get them back and found a process that involves the App Store button that SHOULD be next to a camera icon when I open my messages app. Neither the camera nor the App Store icon appears. Without these, I can't proceed to the next steps. I tried looking in Settings to see if I just needed to enable a keyboard, but there was nothing there to enable.

I downloaded a memoji keyboard from the App store, but it's clunky to use - not seamless like the memojis I used to have. How can I get them back?

In new message hit happy face icon by the space bar, Hit "show Stickers", scroll action bar at the top to the right, hit memoji icon and the personalized faces show up. Very complicated compared to the old way. Liked that much better.

I got Stickers turned on and have everything available, but all of my personal Memojis did NOT come back. In fact, it's just the animals and the custom "Me"moji and all of its iterations are nowhere to be found. And there is no way to make a new one either. The only option is to do a live recording as an animal, but you can't design a Memoji anymore. So it seems the personalized Memoji have just been discontinued...?

My problem resolved.

Back story. I upgraded from iOS 16.x to 17.1. Afterward, in iMessage, I couldn't find my Memojis (the one I created to resemble me, plus the subsequent ones auto-generated from that). I followed the various suggestions here, to no avail. I tapped the + next to the message box, tapped Stickers, then scrolled through the row of icons, tapping on each one. Where I expected to find them (the icon of the face with a heart covering each eye) was empty.

I reflected on the several posts here reporting the same problem I had, but it being resolved after they updated to 17.1. As updating from 16.x to 17.1 is what resulted in the problem for me, I hadn't given much consideration to those posts. But it struck me that perhaps the specific version might not be the essential fact, but rather the upgrading itself. (An odd consideration, I realize, but software can do all sorts of quirky things.)

So, I checked for an upgrade, and 17.1.1 was available. I installed it, and voila, my Memojis were back, right where I had initially expected to find them.

Stupid and annoying, but resolved. Thanks those here who have posted replies to try to fix the missing Memojis problem. I appreciate the community!

Reunable your emoji keyboard from the keyboard settings of your iPhone and check if it solves the problem.

Second, reset Predictive emojis on the iPhone. First, turn off the Predictive emojis, then wait for a few seconds, and then again turn on the Predictive emojis.

Lastly, your iPhone should be updated to the latest version of iOS (According to your device).

Ok, thanks for the help. But for what it’s worth, I just want to register disappointment for an update making one of the sweetest, most enjoyable extras (personalized memojis) not only harder to find, but kind of a pain - they were a nice surprise, now they are missing and i almost wish i hadn’t ever discovered them. Why make something cool and easy suddenly unfindable and extra work? It’s like they don’t want you to use a thing they once practically begged you to use (and made it super obvious and easy!)

This update just made things more tedious, more work, and therefore less interesting

Hi,

You can re-enable the emoji keyboard and reset Predictive Emojis on iPhone. Go to setting >>> Gor to General >>> Go to Keyboard >>> Turn off Predictive Emoji, wait for a few seconds, and then turn on.

Also, you can check on your iMessage App. Open any conversation and click the "+" icon near the text bar. Now, choose the Memoji sticker packs.

Hi. Same problem. The only icons I see are a plus sign on the left and a microphone on the right. There are no symbols as you described. Under a previous update they were moved from the emojis area to the stickers area. Now they’re neither place. Why does Apple keep screwing with them? It takes quite a while to remake them. Please put them in one place and leave them alone! What do I need to do to get them back, again?

I guess you didn't read any of the thread before posting. You can access your Memoji by tapping on the "+" next to the text entry box then selecting "Stickers". Depending on how many sticker packs you have installed, you may have to swipe a bit. The icon for Memoji is three faces with the central face having hearts for eyes.

If you have iOS 17 and you cannot use your Memojis on Facebook messenger, you have to drag the Memoji you want and put it into the reply field.

In order to find your Memojis, you click on the happy face as usual. Then you have to click on that icon that looks like a half folded circle and you should be able to find all of your memojis there. You have to click on all the ones that you use frequently and they will show up next time on the bottom left where they usually are.

My personalized emoji disappeared and is not under the new drop down menu in stickers. It was an animated emoji, not like the ones available from Apple. I called Apple help desk and after 10 minutes of searching the Apple rep was unable to help. She suggested my VPN might have blocked my emoji and said I should try disabling it briefly to see if the emoji reappears. I am hesitant to do that so I’ll probably just try to find the APP that enabled me to create the emoji.
