iOS 17 Storage Space Bug / Issue

This feature/item was not there upon iOS 16.6 - but after the upgrade to iOS17 - phone storage data has been taken up due to SYNCED CONTENT.

There was no reason for it to take up nearly 20-30% of the storage away from the phone (when my device had about 30-40 gigs left I'm down to 4.23gbs). This has disallowed me to back up my device to my iMac due to now lack of storage space b/c of this issue.

This seems to be an un-tested feature/bug/issue. I'm sure many users would not be happy knowing that their device storage was depleted for some unwanted/untested feature.

Is anybody else noticing this issue as well (as among many reddit forums /alternative forums as well).

The 17.1.2 update didn’t help, but I am seconding the restore comment.

Back up your phone, wipe it, then restore it from that backup. Since I’m a Windows computer user and I don’t use iCloud, I backed up my phone via iTunes. I then did a factory reset of my phone (make sure to keep your eSim/carrier data, it will give you that option before you completely erase it), then backed it up from the backup I created. You should also be able to create a backup from iCloud if you don’t have iTunes. It’s been around half a day and it LOOKS like everything is normal so far. One of my apps shrank from 1.4gb to 417mb, and the Documents & Data size now looks reasonable. Previously, simply deleting apps did nothing to change the size of Documents & Data.

It took a few hours and time will tell if is bloats back to its bigger size, but it’s worth a shot. Just be very careful when backing up and erasing your phone.

I was fine for a couple of days but when I opened my camera app, I again got the error message that I had no storage available. When I hit the "manage storage" option, the app dies and I can't get into settings to do anything. Soooo....I reboot the phone....which takes 15 mins to do and when it comes back up, my storage is fine. Well below half of the 256GB.

This is definitely BS.

This is where I leave you all....best of luck!!

So, I had a couple of IT folks tell me that it sounded like the problem with my phone was that the OS itself was corrupt. No matter how many times I erased and backed up from iCloud, it wasn't going to be fixed until the OS itself was fixed. That seemed to track so I looked to see if I was eligible for an upgrade and I was so I just bit the bullet and got a new phone. I know this isn't an option for everyone but it solved my problem. The storage is holding steady every day.

So, for those still trying to fix this, I would suggest trying to get the actual iOS removed and reinstalled. I have no idea how hard this might be but would certainly try to have someone at an Apple store do it if that's possible. That might fix it...or...putting on my favorite conspiracy theory hat...maybe some of us have this happen so we'll buy new devices. These days...anything is possible!

Good luck all!!! I know this is frustrating!!

Today i observe another issue with iphone storage since ios 17.0.1. The issue is that phone app is growing constantly after every time i open the phone app or view a contact. I am trying also to figure it out how to set up a full screen photo but not via poster. For now the only way is to delete the contact and save it as new then take a picture or select one from photo library change ratio to 3:5 and then use the assign to contact option trough share. Bear in mind that this is not always working but most times. Sorry if this is not fully relate but it might be helpful for some so i though i’d share:) Any one else have this issue?

Sorry - but my reply got removed by APPLE b/c they thought i said something"true" that they didnt' like.

As a consumer as well as a person that works in tech - they had lot of time to test the OS out when they allowed it out for developers so - surprised to see it not even get noticed for such a HUGE Bug in the coding.

I promise you this post is related to my issue. There is no way my storage goes from 60gb to suddenly 94gb in 2 days right after updating to IOS 17. I have cleared cache on all apps already. Previous to this issue my discord was 500mb, now it’s 13gb… Never has it gone over 500mb and I don’t even use it often.

I am not going to uninstall and reinstall the apps since it’s all my apps that have tripled or quadrupled in size. I will wait till bug fix.

Similar issue, and it’s unfortunate how widespread it is. My issue on my 64gb iPhone 12, is how my apps take up hundreds of MB’s if not a GB or so of “documents and data”.

iOS 16 never had this issue so it’s sad to see this. I have maybe 20 apps downloaded. YouTube, Snap, Facebook, Instagram etc, all fill up on documents and data extremely quick.

I am still dealing with same issue. I put all my pictures in the cloud/ I no longer receive my mail on my phone I desperately need more gb / now when I take a picture on my I phone I can’t send it to my email address because there is no message green logo in the cloud. So I have been asking my friend to send the pictures to my email.

64 gb should not be sold. I have an older friend he cannot do the download because of the same issue.

we both have 11 pro iPhone kind of joke because of not having convenience of taking spontaneous for that fact any pictures.

I am disappointed as I pay 2.99 for Icloud storage 200 gb. Not thrilled and am extremely disappointed .

thanks for reaching out. Have a good evening I am responding my iPad not phone,

Have you tried a roll back?

Hold down the Option/Alt key and click on Restore iPhone. You should be able to select the version of iOS you wish to install on the iPhone from your downloads folder. Click on Open. A message will appear saying which version of iOS you will install – this should be the one you have selected.

Restore from back-up;

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Tap Manage Account Storage, then tap Backups. Tap a backup to see more details about it, choose which information to back up, or delete the backup.
