Had the same issue. Got it to work by having Apple Music open on both phones before CarPlay connected. Had passenger try and join SharePlay then on my phone I opened the now playing and there was a 1 beside the SharePlay icon, tapped the SharePlay icon hit the green check mark and it worked.

Good luck!

I have tested this feature with both a IOS 17 parental controlled phone and a non-parental controlled phone. Scanning the barcode does pop Apple Music up on both phones, however only the non-parental controlled phone worked. The parental controlled phone gave the "Feature Unavailable" message posted earlier. Hopefully they Apple addresses this because it seems like an oversight. The feature will be great if kid's phones can use it.

It works fine for my 15-year-old. It does not work for my 12-year-old. My 12-year-old is turning 13 in one weeks time. I will report back then.

that’s also how things like Apple Pay work. My oldest daughter can use Apple Pay. My younger daughter cannot 13 seems to be the cut off of when Apple thinks you are a child or not.

you also can’t remove a child from the family settings until they hit 13 as well

Have this issue also. My wife (family owner) starts music with car play. I am able to scan QR code and share play. My 11 year old daughter on her iPhone cannot. All devices up to date and in family. My suspicion is age restriction problem as other has posted. Annoying as main benefit from this feature was to enable her to play music without giving up our iPhones 🤣

If this was a parental control thing, not only would it be extremely dumb as letting the kids control the music without handing out your iPhone or constantly switching Carplay users has to be the most likely use case for this function but also, wouldn’t Apple just program their phones to say exactly that instead of letting them control the music for a minute using Safari and stuff? My bet is on it being a bug.

Same here. Tried a lot of things: Called support, changed age to above 16, disabled all parental controls, restarted multiple times after every step, reset phone, changed account type from apple music single to family, ...

So far share play works during a facetime call, but not in carplay mode. I can even set up a wallet credit card in the child account now but still not share music in the car...
