TVOS 17 Audio Issues Require Daily Reboot

Immediately after upgrading to TVOS 17 I noticed audio issues that first present while on the home screen, the system clicks only intermittently play. This is also true when in apps (Settings, Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, etc.)

At first it was an annoyance but did not affect streaming performance. But within a few hours of uptime, the audio issues "bleed" to streaming. Presenting as no audio at all.

I force quit the streaming app, but no audio remains. Also no audio on home screen or other apps.

Restarting the Apple TV provides a temporary work around, but within the span of 1 day, the audio drops out completely. In the interim, system sounds are only intermittent.

Setup:

Apple TV 4K 3rd generation 128GB (purchased 2 weeks ago)

Ethernet connection to router

Samsung 75" TU7000 series TV

HDMI eARC connection to Samsung S series soundbar

TV setup to pass-through audio to the soundbar

I have fiddled with audio settings, to no avail.

I believe this to be a software bug because at no point prior to upgrading to TVOS 17 did I have any audio issues.

Here is what has worked for me (so far, going on 1 day of no audio issues):

Apple TV:

Navigation Sounds = off

Sound Effects & Music = off

Samsung TV:

Expert Sound Settings:

HDMI eARC = off

TV still uses ARC and pass-through to Samsung Soundbar, but enhanced ARC is just turned off. Reading about it, it's not widely implemented and required on only high end equipment.

Why I think this is the solution (at this time, might have to correct myself later on):

I no longer hear "pops" when new audio starts. Example: changing channels in live TV in Hulu or playing/pausing in any streaming app.

I might be able to turn back on navigation sounds and sound effects, but for now, because it's working, I'm leaving those off.

Nearing 24 hours with zero audio issues and no need to reboot Apple TV.

Hope this helps. It would be great if Apple acknowledged the issue where the common thread seems to be those of us who use external sound setups.

My audio was fine until, I updated to the latest TVOS. Now it is distorted and verified with apple to return the unit. Today, I received another Apple TV and that worked perfectly for me until, I updated to the latest TVOS. Then distorted sound again.

Apple get this fixed!!! I will be returning again for a refund this time and go with a different product. With a high fidelity sound system, this is not acceptable….

Thank you.

I just bought this **** yesterday. It was fine before the software update, but today, since morning till evening i thought it was my bad luck. I received a bad one. I have tried everything to get rid of the distorted sound. Finally i realised, it is the updated version 17. I never had any problem with any apple product. Apple tv was not my desire equipment. Now i am bit regretting. And bit worried, cz ppl are still complaining …… and no response from apple yet.

Audio is intermittently dropping - regardless of which app I’m streaming from.

if it is something to do with the eARC connection to our Sonos soundbar. I was able to add one of the other Sonos speakers in the next room), and that has not dropped the audio at all.

Unfortunately, that speaker is in a different room and spent really work as a temporary replacement option.

I’ll open a ticket with Apple tomorrow.

How do we get Apple Support to actually look at this and issue a software update.

my setup is AppleTV4k to my Samsung TV, Samsung TV to sound bar.

worked perfectly until os17. Now sound is very delayed when moving over any and apps like Apple TV, Netflix, YouTube, don’t work. Oddly Hulu works more often than others.

it seems Apple TV does get hot and after being off for a few hours Apple TV and Netflix will work but then stop working and sound delayed again.

tried resets, and all the normal stuff. No luck.

os16 worked great, upgrade to os17 and stopped.

Apple Support please patch this.

We have already tried turning off Navigation Sounds and / or Sound Effect & Music to no avail. We have Sony TVs and since the problem is obviously Apple TV iOS 17, not sure we want to delve into mucking with Sony TV settings. Will be curious though if for some reason your change on your Samsung continues to work. Bottom line is Apple needs to get their you know what together and fix this.

Yes. 100% agree. I'll keep everyone posted. I've been switching channels, swapping back and forth between apps trying to get the problem to come back, but so far it's doing good with audio working like it should. I hope it does not come back because you are right, this is a workaround, and they need to provide us with a bug fix / update. Never had any issues with previous OS. Last time I update to an optional major OS release. Usually, I like to wait a bit and I jumped the gun on this one. Not doing that again.
