TVOS 17 Audio Issues Require Daily Reboot

Immediately after upgrading to TVOS 17 I noticed audio issues that first present while on the home screen, the system clicks only intermittently play. This is also true when in apps (Settings, Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, etc.)

At first it was an annoyance but did not affect streaming performance. But within a few hours of uptime, the audio issues "bleed" to streaming. Presenting as no audio at all.

I force quit the streaming app, but no audio remains. Also no audio on home screen or other apps.

Restarting the Apple TV provides a temporary work around, but within the span of 1 day, the audio drops out completely. In the interim, system sounds are only intermittent.

Setup:

Apple TV 4K 3rd generation 128GB (purchased 2 weeks ago)

Ethernet connection to router

Samsung 75" TU7000 series TV

HDMI eARC connection to Samsung S series soundbar

TV setup to pass-through audio to the soundbar

I have fiddled with audio settings, to no avail.

I believe this to be a software bug because at no point prior to upgrading to TVOS 17 did I have any audio issues.

Here is what has worked for me (so far, going on 1 day of no audio issues):

Apple TV:

Navigation Sounds = off

Sound Effects & Music = off

Samsung TV:

Expert Sound Settings:

HDMI eARC = off

TV still uses ARC and pass-through to Samsung Soundbar, but enhanced ARC is just turned off. Reading about it, it's not widely implemented and required on only high end equipment.

Why I think this is the solution (at this time, might have to correct myself later on):

I no longer hear "pops" when new audio starts. Example: changing channels in live TV in Hulu or playing/pausing in any streaming app.

I might be able to turn back on navigation sounds and sound effects, but for now, because it's working, I'm leaving those off.

Nearing 24 hours with zero audio issues and no need to reboot Apple TV.

Hope this helps. It would be great if Apple acknowledged the issue where the common thread seems to be those of us who use external sound setups.

From what I've seen in these posts - various configurations net slightly different end results, but the common denominator is most certainly iOS17 and Apple TV. Here, it is Apple TV / Sony smart TV / over WiFi to a stereo pair of Apple Homepod Minis, and the sound just cuts in and out sporadically, seemingly volume levels pumping back and forth between the two of them for a couple / few seconds. Absolutely nothing else has changed here other than the update to iOS 17 on our Apple TV. Oddly enough - we also have an Apple TV in another room that does not play through Homepods, but rather through hardwired speakers, and we have not noticed the problem there - so perhaps the problem with iOS 17 has something to do with the WiFi coding. Either way - not our job - but it is Apple's job to fix this - pronto.

I tried this and it does not work for me. I also tried stereo. Since there was no change I put it back to auto (Dolby Atmos available). What I have just tried, still waiting for results is:

Turning off navigation sounds

Turning off system sounds & music (or whatever it's called right under navigation sounds)

I believe this disables all system sounds created by TVOS.

This should leave only audio from the apps you use. I will give this a couple days and see if it drops out before claiming it as a solution.

Right now, TVOS makes zero sounds when navigating or opening/closing apps. That is my test for the next couple of days.

I have a similar problem. I have a similar setup as you with the same hardware. I’m experiencing issues with my video streaming apps (Apple TV+, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc.), but that’s not the case for my music streaming apps. I’ve tried rebooting the hardware but to no avail. Audible from the navigation clicks works fine. Today, I powered off my Samsung soundbar to allow the audio to be played from my tv speakers, and it worked. However, when I switched the audio back to my soundbar the audio ceased to play. In conclusion, it’s not specifically the soundbar or my Apple TV, it appears to be an issue with the apps’ compatibility with the soundbar. Regardless of whether that is the case, this is a terrible inconvenience since I enjoy and prefer the Dolby Atmos capability of my soundbar.

Similar problem here that I posted about in a separate thread. For me the audio glitches randomly. Like the volume level just randomly drops for a split second and then comes back. It only seems to happen on certain shows in certain apps like Prime Video. Never had this problem until the OS 17 update so there is definitely something off. There were some posts about this on Reddit too so it seems many people are noticing audio problems.

Which update are you referring to? Since TV OS17.2 is not available yet other than in test mode - I am guessing you meant TV OS17.1. Others have posted, as well, that 17.1 does not fix the audio problems (but are hopeful that OS17.2 might) Sure wish this thread and the other had never been separated - but here is the other one.

I just updated to the latest release, 17.2, and the sound issues described in this discussion are now present. This issue did not occur with the 17.0 to 17.1 versions.

The only solution is to unplug the Apple TV; however, this only works while the unit remains on. If the TV/Apple TV is turned off, I need to unplug it the next time it's turned on to get sound.

My TV is a Samsung UN60D8000 (60”). The Apple TV model is A1842.

Any ideas when Apple may provide a permanent solution?

Has anyone tried resetting aTV to default factory? If so, what improvements if any have you had? I did this yesterday and while it's too early to tell I'm hopeful it worked out some of the kinks. Most notably in Hulu when changing live channels, it would immediately start the new channel video, but audio would not kick in for ~20 seconds. Also, in Disney+, after some period of time, the audio would glitch and you would hear a pop or other distortion, and then the audio would be out of sync and seemingly lose tracks. Everything is wired so the wireless variable is not a factor here. I'm done many other troubleshooting steps in the past to work this out and get around it and nothing has worked hence the factory reset. As of lunchtime yesterday so far Hulu channels have been working normally, but time will tell. What has resetting to factory done for you all to improve the situation?

I am having a similar issue, which started after my update to tvOS 17. I have a Yamaha surround system where the sound will completely drop after watching a couple of hours of TV. Not sure if it's the changing to a different streaming service which causes it or if it's completely random. It's happened with the AppleTV app, Max, Prime and AMC+. I do have a stereo pair of HomePod Mini's in the living room that I can switch to and I have no issue playing sound from there once I lose sound from the Yamaha. Issue seems to reset overnight as every time I wake up in the morning and turn on my AppleTV, the sound issue is resolved until later in the evening where it happens again. I'm hardwired from my cable service to the AppleTV as well as to the Yamaha system and Samsung TV.

I’m having the same/similar issues. I get loud random clicks. If you rewind the program the click does not repeat. I have restarted and even reset after chatting with support. Nobody at Apple tech support has had any reasonable insight. It is only happening with my Apple TV. All the same apps run fine on smart TV without use of physical Apple TV. I’m running a Sonos arc and a samsung OLED.
