Wi-fi stopped working after upgrading to iOS 17.0.1

I am having trouble with my internet connection since downloading the latest iOS update 17.0.1. I am only able to access the internet through cellular data. My other devices are working on the wi-fi network normally. This issue began immediately after installing the update.

Update: I updated the software to 17.0.2 and still experiencing the same issue. One workaround I found is that my iPhone 11 will only connect to the wi-fi network (WPA2) when turning off the “Private Wi-fi Address” setting. I hope this issue gets addressed in a further update.

Troubleshooting iPhone WiFi:

A. About "No Internet Connection":

Just because you are connected to a network, does not mean you have an Internet connection. You may be connected to an internal LAN, and not to the Internet.

B. Troubleshooting iPhone WiFi:

A few thoughts to try:

I. Start Here: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch won't Connect to a Wi-Fi Network - Apple Support

II. Clear the Temporary Internet Files:

III. Restart your Router:

  1. Power: off the router
  2. Wait: 30 seconds
  3. Power: It back on

IV. Reconnect to your Network:

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: Wi-Fi
  3. Disable: Wi-Fi
  4. Wait: 30 seconds
  5. Enable: Wi-Fi

V. Add Back the Network:

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: Wi-Fi
  3. Remove: the network
  4. Wait: 30 seconds
  5. Add: the network back

VI. Reset All Network Settings to Default:

Example of items that will be reset: (Wi-Fi Passwords, VPN Connections, etc):

  1. Go To: Settings
  2. Tap: General
  3. Tap: Reset
  4. Tap: Reset Network Settings.
  5. Enter: [Your Passcode]

Here’s something to try, we’ve been noting issues with corporate wifi and “private wifi address”. (there are other threads following this).

Go into settings->wifi then tap on “edit”. Find the network(s) it won’t connect with and tap on the (i) icon. Turn off “private wifi address” and see if that helps.

It seems that iOS 17 automatically sets this and sometimes other privacy settings when you install it.

Mine was also fixed by 17.0.3. I did not need to do a reset or anything special -- simply update to 17.0.3.

Please note that this fix seems to be specific for those of us that had/have issue connecting to certificate-based Wifi authentication. If you have issues connecting to, say, WPA authentication access points, this is not your issue.

Hello everyone,

Here’s a workaround until Apple can patch it soon!!!

The issue:

iPhone on iOS 17.0.1-3 joins home wifi network. It receives a DHCP address as it should, however the phone reports no internet. So the wifi is connected, but the internet doesn’t work.

All other devices on the network are working just fine.

You have rebooted your phone, rebooted your router and reset iOS network settings. None of that worked, it’s still broken.

Temp Fix:

Step 1: On your iPhone go to Settings>Wi-Fi>”your wifi network name”

Step 2: Toggle Private Network Address

that means, If it’s on, turn it off, if it’s off turn it on.

Each Phone reboot, you will need to toggle it. Keeping it on or off won’t fix the issue once the iPhone is restarted, or your DHCP lease expires.

Let me know if this resolves it for you.

I’ve tested this on 2 devices that have this issue on two different wifi networks.

Good Luck

This morning I upgraded my iPhone 14 Pro to iOS 17.1 and immediately had issues with connecting to wifi. I came out to this forum and saw all of the issues that were being posted and tried all the fixes to no avail. As I was clearing papers off my desk I came across some notes I made (right after upgrading to 17.1) regarding my VPN. Bells went off. I went into Settings>VPN and touched the (i) on the old VPN that I had. The "Connect on Demand" button was on and the scroll wheel was going round and round. I turned off "Connect on Demand" and was immediately connected to wifi.

I don't know if this will help anyone out, but it was obviously my issue with connecting to wifi. Best of luck to all of you. Seems to be a very pervasive issue.

AHA!

I have all my devices' MAC addresses in the allowlist for my router. All other addresses are blocked.

As I waited for my iOS17.1 iPhone to get an upgrade to 'fix' whatever happened, I was surprised this morning when my 16.6.1 iPad which I hadn't used in a few days suddenly started to be unable to connect with my WiFi either.

On my router admin screen, I also noticed a device with a local IP address, but a MAC I didn't recognize. HMMM.

Then I looked at my iPad's Settings -> WiFi -> (my router name) screen and there was a Private WiFi Address switch and it was turned on. I turned the switch off and the address changed. And suddenly my iPad could connect.

I did this with my iPhone, and bada-bing, I'm back in the saddle again.

Apparently this feature is supposed to give you a different address for different networks, so no one can track your device across networks??? Whaaat? Did I ask for this? I connect to one network - mine. Why was this feature automatically on??? OMG!

Hi, I had the same problem with an extremely slow and almost non working connection with my ipad pro, this definitely solved it: go via internet browser to your router setting (by typing IP adress of your router and enter the admin password), find WIFI setting, and change "channel" to auto.. or try any other channel (for some TP-LINK routers: Wireless>Basic Settings>Channel>Auto). I had a fixed channel set up before. But strangely, the connection on both PC and Iphone with ios17 ran without a problem. Really it is probably some specific problem with the firmware that does not communicate properly with the router..

Just returned from the “Genius Bar” at the Apple Store. Before going I had disabled my VPN and suddenly it worked. I was told I had fixed my problem and there was no need for a VPN unless it was also a work phone which I would never do. Anyway, she went on to say this is the source of many problems and then asked if she could delete it on my phone. I gladly let her do that given the inconvenience of being unable to connect.

I have an iPad Air 4 that I updated and nothing worked. I read all the posts on this page. Eventually Reddit saved me. Apparently it can be an issue with IPV6 or something, so a workaround is to disable it I believe.

anyway this worked for me;

  1. Go to Settings
  2. tap i next to your Wi-Fi SSID
  3. Configure DNS
  4. Select Manual
  5. Remove your IPv6 DNS addresses

I messed around with it until it worked. Hopefully this helps some people!
