VIP mailbox is broken
After upgrading to 17 my inbox has found its way into my VIP folder. If I look on the folder in menu bar, Inbox is greyed out so I can’t move them out that way, but if I drag and drop them back into my inbox, they don’t stay in VIP.
This is a problem - I use my VIP folder to ensure I see messages that are important, and can miss important stuff that is happening daily.

I just logged out of iCloud and logged back in and it seems to be working. It took a couple hours for mine. I don’t have nearly as many as you but maybe log out and log back in at night and it should be fixed by the morning. Fingers crossed for you.
Log out of iCloud and log back in. Mine seems to be working again after doing that. It looks good this morning! Let’s hope it stays this way.
I have spent some time working on this with Apple support. Re-installing Mail resolves the problem initially, but it appears to return - in my case within 48 hours. I reinstalled again, and it fixed it again, and I am waiting to see if the problem returns. It seems a number of people have this issue, and it is now recognised as a fault that some have experienced after upgrading to iOS.17. Technicians are looking into how it can be fixed, and when that is done, a patch will be rolled out in a future update.
My iPhone is stuck at iOS.16, and does not exhibit the problem. I am holding back on upgrading my MacBook Pro to OSX.14, because I cannot afford to lose this functionality on that device, and don’t want to risk the bug being on Mail in the new release.
The iOS 17.1 upgrade restored the functionality to my self-created mailboxes.
I hope it has repaired your VIP Mailbox issues as well.
It’s on mine as well. I have over 17 k in my VIP.
My other iPad on iPadOS 15 is ok, the iPhone on iOS 17.1 is ok. The MacBook on Sonoma is ok

I confirmed that deleting Apple Mail from iOS and reinstalling resolved the issue initally, but it re-occurred as soon as I added a new VIP.
The issue vacillates between having no messages listed in the VIP mailbox at all, and having VIPs as well as lots of other non-VIP email intermixed.
Big impact for those of us who rely in this feature, please fix!
Same here. I went from a super clean VIP in-box with just my GF messages in it to 21,000 emails and growing….super frustrated. I deleted contact for VIP inbox. Unchecked VIP. Then reset. Yeah. Even more emails in my VIP inbox. 😔
iOS 17 is a hot mess. With auto-correct suggesting words that do not even exist, to this in-box issue, to randomly initiating Home scenes…
My VIP mail no longer works either! First, it was showing all mail. I just deleted a contact from VIP and now it’s showing I have no mail. I hope they fix it cause I have to volunteer and can’t find the email from the person who sent it.
This exact scenario just happened to me. I just put the email address back on my VIP list and the emails repopulated in the VIP folder.. not just VIPs but ALL items from the ALL 4 mailboxes I have in the Apple Mail app. I’m on iOS 7.0.3, iPhone 14 Pro.
I have over 15K emails in my VIP box. I tried deleting everyone in my VIP list and then adding them back but that did nothing. With all the junk emails that are sent it is extremely difficult to keep on top of the important ones.
Very disgusted with this!!! Please fix ASAP!!!
I just upgraded to 17.1.1 today, and this was the first day there was more than VIP emails in my VIP box. I signed out of iCloud and back in, and that didn’t fix things. I hope Apple comes out with a fix soon.
Seems fine on latest OSX & iPhone still in iOS 16
It broke all the inbox links to the mailboxes I created and redoing them with new emails doesn’t restore them

Same issue here. From fresh and clean VIP view to now over 18,000 extra emails in VIP.
Same issue just encountered on iPhone 15 Pro Max iOS 17.0.3. Hopeful for fix Apple.
