Apple Watch Ultra 2 VERY dim inside and dark enviroments..

Hello.

I just bought a very expensive Ultra 2 Watch. I am happy with the watch overall, but what totally ruins the experience is it is SO dim inside and in dark enviroments! I can hardly read it. There is no override available and the brightness is set to full. My son has a Series 6 and that is brighter in the same conditions. This cant be real? This so called "ULTRA" is more weak in brightness performance than an older regular Apple Watch. If there is something I HATE it is factory controlled auto stuff like this! We know the watch can be brighter so WHY on earth is it locked to a weak sensor that is WAY to low calibrated? I know its unfortunately not a hardware issue as ALL other Ultra Watch suffer from this ridicolous factory setting. Why can I not disable this auto dim or at least raise the lower minimum brightness. This is a disaster, as I can hardly read the watch in my office and living room where we have low light usually. This is almost a RETURN ISSUE for me! The fact that the user cannot set this setting when I bought and paid for the watch is a disgrace! And for those that reply its working as intended I can see by a search that hundreds of other users complain about this "error". This HAS to be corrected in a software update ASAP!

Hello. Yes you are right- it almost seems like it dosent matter with this brightness slider! And I know the watch can be ultra bright IF you take a flashlight and light onto it. :( I just HATE these factory locked settings where "they know whats best for you!". But this is an essential thing for me to use! What if I was 70 years and had a bad vision! I really cant understand Apples way of thinking here! So I contacted support and they say the best we can do is write this complaint/ request at this feedback page which I did from two email accounts! ;) So PLEASE file a request or hardware issue! I did one on both topics!

I was just escalated to a level 2 “advisor” and he told me there was no known issues in 10.1 and did the whole rigmarole of telling me to repair it to my phone and call him back. Think he just simply didn’t believe me, and completely ignored me when when I asked him to just google “Ultra 2 Dim display”.

Sadly, viewing my feedback, it still shows "none" under "Recent similar reports".

So, I'm sure hoping folks are filing feedback as this forum isn't always going to be seen by the folks that matter.

Please file feedback if you haven't already!

Apple Watch Feedback Link

Yes, the feedback links are important as well, but are much easier for Apple to ignore since it’s not accompanied by actual test results and photos and videos that you get with calling in. The engineer confirmed that as well. He said that people need to call in to get results. He said they need actual test data to prove an issue. Also, when they have to send you out a replacement, it’s hitting them where it counts. It’s costing them money.

Just an update. Apple just called me back and they have chosen to ignore the issue. The engineering department is claiming that it is 'expected behavior' because it's still legible. Even though they saw video of my Series 9 next to my FAR brighter older Series 4, that's 'expected behavior'. This is ridiculous that they can deceitfully advertise a brighter watch and scam us out of our hard-earned money by denying the problem...and get away with it.

Wow, that is indeed a bummer. I've updated my feedbacks and not heard anything. Such a shame - I was so excited to move up to the best watch they make, and now I'm settled into a watch that works 1/2 of my day.

Had I caught onto this when it was brand new (Ultra2) I'd have returned it.

One thing for sure, I will NOT recommend this watch to anyone. In fact, I told my Dad not to get one as his eyes are even older than mine, and it would drive him nuts.

Since I have this watch now and can't do much about it, I'll remember this next time - likely won't be a next time for me.

I was wondering if a couple of you guys could try this and let me know what happens as it works for me..

I have to use a face that has no option for switching off night mode and because Siri face is the only one apart from wayfinder that the calendar sync works correctly with as it used to, all the rest the sync doesn't update the calendar correctly. I need to be able to show my blood glucose in the calendar, using another app Shuggah, but there is no option in the Siri face to turn off night mode, and I need to turn it off, so I can see my blood sugars in the calendar complication as I am a diabetic, hence when it gets dark I can hardly see any display apart from the time, so I added Modular ultra on iPhone watch app and set it as my face after turning night mode off in the edit mode on the iPhone sliding the green frame across to where it says off at the bottom, not the red just green frame with off at bottom of frame then set as my watch face. Then I went back to the watch pressed down on the face and went back to the Siri face. It's working OK for me in the dark now as night mode is turned off, now it's not brilliant but well usable enough for me to be able to see everything so you can now pick the face you want that doesn't have the night mode option to turn it off, and I'm a pensioner with poor eyesight. Let me know if it

works for you, please.

Tried early hours this morning pitch black, still can read it don't think It's as it should be but definitely usable I can even read the small blood value, just hate the face with a vengeance it's so ugly and limited to two complications when I need to use a lot more to use my home automations to make things easier for me as I am disabled.

Yes people are reporting that Series 9 has same issues as Ultra 2. And some people say its the software version WatchOS 10+. I am a little unsure of the last. But I got to say that I am loosing confidence in Apple. Since I wrote this post (OP) there has been two WatchOS updates. None of them had a fix included. And let´s be honest here, this is NOT something that requires months of beta testing or require a lot of programmers to compile code.

The functionality is already in place, via settings. The way I see it there really only is two ways of fixing this.

  1. Disable the ambient sensor.
  2. Boost the watch´s brightness settings (recalibrate)

I am very concerned about this as Apple has not even acknowledged the problem officially. Yesterday I did a quick google on the issue- just to see if there is a general awareness. And sure there is. Many news outlets and other places reports this via articles and so on.

This is not a feature request or demand on changing radically the watch. This is very serious request/ complaint as were to the watch become useless and worthless when in semi/ low light conditions. For me personally it ruins the entire experience! I mean I was like... ahhh should I do it? Buy a Apple watch? And then should I REALLY pay double up for a Ultra compared to regular series although I never would need the "Ultra features". So I fired the trigger and bought it. Its a big investment and I just feel so let down and cheated that basically I am only happy 12 hours of the day of the watch. The rest 12 hours its useless and something that bothers me. But the whole process to seeing the ad´s and 3000 nits screen- blah blah... And then this feature is only available if you place the sun on top of the watch lol! Now I did not for one second took note or was impressed over the "as low as 1 nit" about the display. Because I thought this was reserved for standby or other power saving features. Now I don't know if it IS 1 nit in the evening where I cannot read it due to dim, but it certainly feels like it. I am just so.... WAUV! baffled over Apple could think that this VERY low brightness settings is like "one size fits all". Not only can I not read it, but it hurts and put stress on my eyes when I try to. And then there is the fact that you want this "Ultra feeling" about your "super titanium watch". Well I am getting far from that. It looks weak and under powered and is just bad energy with this problem. I dont understand why either the auto dim is locked. On the iPhone it can be turned off, which I always do and adjust after my own prefs. And like on the phone the user is full aware that adjusting the brightness is a balance between battery life. This should 100% be the user set this and have power over this! The idea of that "Apple knows whats best for you and your eyes" are a joke! Anyway I just had the need for another rant because I am getting impatient and loosing hope!

Side note: I actually noticed yesterday for the first time that when in the low light conditions and the watch is in this "too dim" mode. If you then take your phone and slide the brightness (for the watch) down and up (from already max level) while the watch is active- It actually for a short time goes up to the "desired" level (for what is usable). This for some seconds like it should have been, it looks like. But after like 20 sec or something like that the watch dim down to the unacceptable level. So if the user could just skip at least the final dim down level it would be very likely- not an issue.

What I am trying to say is that the way I see it, it requires SO little from Apple to at least fix this to a acceptable level. And that would not even be to re-calibrate the sensor but disable the final level like described if you understand. And this "final dim level" seems like, or at least sounds like its a "feature" of the Ultra 2 and Series 9.

I have made comparisons with my son´s Series 6 watch. And his does not go down to this final dim level. Although the optimal would be total user control and a way of disabling the sensor, and on his Series 6 I would prefer a notch more brightness. His watch defiantly is on a usable and acceptable level compared to mine. And that's just another meeeeh! That an older regular Series 6 is "better" and more "powerful" than the brand new "Ultra 2". It´s a complete joke!

I bought the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 on Friday (11/10/23) before having read any of this. I loved it all day and then nightfall came and the watch became useless. I couldn’t read anything and luckily I still had my Apple Watch 4 which still works great. Much better than the new watch at night. I found this string online and decided to return the new watch before it was too late. I returned it after only 2 days. I think it is irresponsible for Apple to even sell these watches until they find a fix. As for me, I decided I wasn’t going to keep a useless watch at night in the hope that Apple would resolve the issue sometime in the future having done nothing to resolve it for over two months. My advice is don’t buy one until it is resolved and tell everyone you know about the problem. The sales people at the Apple Store claimed to know nothing about it…

Hello everyone,

I think I may have some good news to report. I am the proud owner of a brand new Apple watch ultra 2, that I literally just got in the mail today. As I was configuring it, I set the brightness to max, as I also was interested in the higher brightness screen than other models. However, as many of you reported, I noticed that in my dim entertainment center room, I was almost completely unable to see the screen. After hours of messing with settings and reading up on forums, I lost all hope that it was a software bug that apple was supposedly aware of, and that it needed to be fixed in a future update. Much to my surprise, as I was getting ready for bed, I noticed a software update was available, 10.2 (21S364). I did the update, and did some testing. I went into a completely dark room, and raised the watch to my face, and to my surprise, I personally feel that the screen is a bit brighter now than it was before. If anyone else has this same experience, than apple may have listened to us. I did not check the patch notes to see if this was a fix mentioned in them. My background is, I had terrible eyesight my entire life, and had Lasik in 2011 in both eyes, so I am very sensitive to things being dim or blurry still, and I prefer all of my screens at near maximum brightness. Sorry for the long post, figured I'd report on this as it is my personal experience and it may help others install this update for a possible fix. I hope I'm not imagining this all and it truly is a fix for you all. Take care

Haven’t found a fix. However I found a few tweaks that made my screen more usable despite the low light.

Use a watch face with a white center. Infograph with the white circle works best for my eyes.

My favorite screen is Modular Ultra. I created two versions. One is the standard. I made a second one which is just white. Much better in low lighting. The red version for Night Mode is awful but all white works a bit better.

Turning on bold and increasing text size helps. Bigger thicker letters means more light is emitted

Again none of these fix the underlying issue but they have made my watch a bit more usable

I spent an hour on the phone with Apple Support

There is no way of adjusting the ambient light adjustment

I was told that this is not on their list of “known issues “ and that these devices are “responding as designed”

I have a two page summary of why visually impaired people cannot see these images but there evidently is no way of sending this to them and the engineering team will not speak to consumers
