iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

Just to let you know how the story ended: I went to the Genius Bar and they attended me very well, they already knew about the problem but not officially, they knew because they had read about it, they did not tell me if more people had gone there with the problem, but cautiously at the table where I sat waiting for them to test the iPhone, there was another person who had the same problem, he was alerted with the heat that the phone got and even told me that he had bought a case in the hope that it would be less noticeable, which did not work. I also heard a conversation of another person complaining about the same thing but I was at a distance that I could not hear everything. In the end I was more than an hour, they tried to reset it without success because as I had tested the beta for some reason I could not reinstall the official version 17.03 or 17.02, they did not get it even with a special computer they had with an iPhone own software that resets in a deeper way. Finally they offered to refund my money even though the 14 days had passed, which I gladly accepted. I am convinced that Apple will fix this problem, but I prefer to wait and see how this story develops.

That’s a great result! I am glad for you. Maybe per Following along may help me.

i am wondering what options those of us that don’t have physical Apple stores have? We only have resellers here and I bought the 15PM direct:

given that the 11PM I “upgraded” from was doing this exact heating up issues (leaves your hand feeling radiated for hours after it gets THAT hot) I can’t believe this is the case also with a brand new phone. Apple support even suggested buying a new phone when I mentioned my other was having this issue. It was otherwise in great condition. But could function as a cooktop…

With the new phone, I’ve tried draining the battery, updating the software, closing all aps, turning off background refresh, you name it.

I feel that this is a very expensive mistake and helpless in this case

I would love some guidance

For me during my nightmare the best temperatures was when I take off the background app refresh, plus location off (that is not the best but maybe there is a intermediate solution turning off all you dont use a lot), plus using the iphone in low power mode. At last in the mean while until Apple fix it, that i’m pretty sure there will be looking how to solve the problem. I will come back to the iphone 15 pro max as soon they solve this, because the photos are gorgeous.

I also don’t have a physical Apple Store around me. Also there’s no returns where I bought it.

my advice is be patient. Apple will fix it in due time.

if it is really hardware that would be the worst case scenario but then apple will recall the phones and exchange them. They always take care of their customers and they have billions to be able to afford it

in fact they can’t afford not to - they can’t afford not to fix the issue

This is why it’s a very good thing when many have the problem. It means it will be fixed.

have some patience and wait. It will be good and in a year nobody will even remember

That's great news that they'll waive the 14 day limit on refunds. They would not do that unless they were aware that there is really no hope of a software fix for the overheating, at least one that does not significantly reduce performance.

They will likely address this issue in the 16 by using a more advanced thermal solution similar to what is being used by other manufacturers of high-end phones: vapor chamber cooling. The 16 is also going to have a more advanced Qualcomm modem.

That's not the case.

I was using my iPhone 15 Pro Max(on 17.0.3) in direct sunlight with ambient around 90F(32 Deg C). Direct sunlight pushed the brightness to max and screen started getting warm. Checked some emails and sent a couple of text messages, brightness started to reduce (screen & side frames got hot). Finally, I took 5-6 snaps using native Camera App (even back got very hot). All this under 5 mins of screen time. At this point, the phone got so hot that the brightness reduced significantly, refresh rate went down heavily and scroll became jittery and lagging (Pro-Motion became Slow-Motion); and Battery drained like an open tap. I could feel the heat ooze out even from Spigen Clear Case.

GUESS WHAT! NO OVERHEATING POP UP WAS THERE.

So, stop hypothesizing that Apple knows everything and they have highly sensitive circuitry to detect heating and they won't cut corners to maximize profits. I repeated several scenarios side by side with my iPhone 14 Pro Max, every time iPhone 15 Pro Max ended up getting significantly hotter.

I have been buying iPhones(Plus/Pro Maxes) for past 7 years now, all on launch day. Something is not right, this time.

Taking it to Genius Bar/Service Centre will be useless as it is unlikely that I will be given an instant replacement. Will wait for 17.1 and stock situation to ease out and approach Apple for replacement.

Really disappointed.

And Guess What? (though it needs certain amount of .... to acknowledge), an iPhone 14 Pro at the same instance under the same conditions neither drastically reduce brightness nor its Pro-Motion became slow motion or drained battery and became only slightly warm. Later, I tested the under the similar conditions with my 1-Year-old iPhone 14 Pro Max, to arrive at same conclusion.

Something is not right with iPhone 15 PM. Take 4-5 macro shots in quick succession without sun, even then iPhone 15 PM suffers a sunstroke.

I'm sorry to hear that your iPhone 15 is overheating. Overheating can be caused by various factors, such as running resource-intensive apps, high ambient temperatures, or a malfunctioning component. To address this issue:

1. Close any background apps: Make sure you're not running too many apps simultaneously.

2. Check for software updates: Ensure your iOS is up to date, as updates may include bug fixes.

3. Remove your phone case: A thick case can trap heat, so consider removing it.

4. Avoid direct sunlight: Keep your iPhone out of direct sunlight.

5. Restart your iPhone: A simple restart can sometimes resolve overheating issues.

6. Reset settings: You can try resetting all settings in the "Settings" app.

7. Monitor battery health: In "Settings" > "Battery" > "Battery Health," check the maximum capacity. If it's significantly degraded, it might be contributing to the issue.

If the problem persists, consider contacting Apple Support or visiting an Apple Store for further assistance.

I'm not sure why you feel you need to argue your concern with me? If you are concerned about your iPhone, which clearly you are, you are doing the right thing by taking it to the Genius Bar at your Apple Store. That's good and I hope they help you, if only to make you less concerned about your iPhone, or if found to be defective, replace it.

You can't by the way, compare iPhone 14 Pro to iPhone 15 Pro. They are completely different devices and the new 3nm chip in it is not the same chip used in any iPhone previously.

Heaven forbid Lobsterghost1,

The user should indeed first seek out a nearby cave to like any cave (wo)man of old.

While in that cave he/she would marvel over the wonder of a mobile phone made by Apple and check those messages / snaps and what not, to return to the world a modern (wo)man.

I, by the way, seem to have difficulties seeing real advice coming my way whenever you write something.

By the way I am sure Apple users would like to use their devices anywhere around the world (aka outside their homes/shopping centers).

Oct 15, 2023 7:31 AM in response to lobsterghost1

That's what I said mate, I will go to genius bar, once some stock builds up.

Your contention that until iPhone pops a message "iPhone needs to cool.....", phone is not overheating is not correct.

And by the way... 3nm has to be better in efficiency, so has to produce lesser heat for similar tasks. I can write a treatise on 3nm vs 4nm. But as a customer, I pay for experience, which was denied 1st time in 7 years.

You're absolutely right. Users should be able to use their iPhone outside their homes. But in some cases, such as using ones phone in directly sunlight, especially, if the ambient temperature might be hot or warm as it can be be in many locations, they should expect their phone to protect itself, if it starts to get hot, by lowering the brightness on the screen. That is normal and expected iPhone behavior. You simply can't avoid the phone getting hot in some cases.

But, if it gets hot, unusually hot, the phone should be tested by Apple to ensure there is nothing wrong with the phone.

I activated my IPhone 15 pro max on Oct 15. Over the course of the next week+ I noticed the battery was not great and when taking a call my phone would heat up.

I am not sure what changed but the last couple days my phone is not heating up on a call and my battery have improved. I made no changes to settings during this time.

I know when you switch phones it takes time for the new one to “settle” - download everything and finish set up - so maybe that was what was going on for me.

I don’t know if anyone else has had improvement after a few days or week, but I sincerely hope this means mine ironed itself out - crossing fingers.
