iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

Mine is heating up just listening to music

Yes, as lobsterghost1 explained, streaming music will cause your phone to heat up. Unless the phone gets so hot you can't hold it or you get a warning on the screen that says it's shutting down, what you're seeing is probably quite normal. Playing games is also another activity that tends to generate heat.

No is not. Not as hot it gets. The Genius Bar that got my iPhone for the hot it gets, said to me that is not normal, nor to be as hot it get just playing YouTube, taking 5 photos only or even ne minute call or any of the, more or less, problems of peolple described here by the users with this issue. So stop saying that please, that not help tho the people with this issue. That’s the reason the Apple Store manager decided to take my iPhone in return. So please help people taking to the Genius Bar for resolve, just saying it’s a normal thing that’s not help in anyway, could be phones that have problems and need revision of a real expert.

I wasn't responding to you. I was responding to FPilau, who simply said their iPhone heats up on "MOBILE DATA" viewing YouTube, which would be expected. They didn't say it go tso hot they couldn't hold it in their hand. Had they said that, of course that wouldn't be expected and if anyone has such a situation, their phone is heating to a level they can't hold it in their hand, they should take it to Apple for evaluation.

iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Replying here after 1 Month of use - after the 17.0.3 update my phone is fine. It's also fine with iOS 17.1 - I have been using the phone normally, and have not seen any unusual heating, warming, or battery use anymore.

In fact battery life is stellar and I usually go to bed at night with around 50% battery remaining.

In hindsight I believe there was a bug that was fixed with 17.0.3 (and also in subsequent OS releases)

Also add the fact that when we set up a new iPhone from iCloud backup, it works very hard downloading and installing all apps from the app store, indexing all files for spotlight, indexing all photos, running photo recognition on my roughly 20,000 photos, and so on - it does a lot of stuff in the beginning.

So give it 1-2 days, upgrade to 17.1 if you haven't, and then see.

Restoring from backup is an awkward phase of high CPU use for the first few days, especially if you're like me and always sleep with airplane mode on, meaning the phone can't do most of its work at night either.

These "that is to be expected" responses are silly - everyone here has been using smart phones for 10 years plus. We're not new to iPhones and have never held a phone in our hand.

So when people complain it's hot, we need to take it seriously.

Normal phones absolutely don't get hot watching streaming video or streaming music etc. We have all been doing these activities for years.

itunes was using a lot of battery on my 11 pro but still it never got hot either.

The issues with my phone resolved itself by waiting a bit after restore from iCloud, and with the 17.x updates. No more heat here. But please don't go around telling everyone it's normal for the phone to get hot when streaming music - you're talking to people who have been using smart phones for a decade and more and who have been streaming music for a decade and more - we know what it's supposed to do!

Did you update your brand new iPhone to iOS 17.1. And Apple suggests that over the first few days while it is indexing the billions of bytes of data over to the new phone it will run warmer. You need to let it do its thing over the next few days, update it to the latest iOS version and then if after a few days it's still too warm, schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar. There is no design flaw.

After the first couple days, my iPhone 15 Pro Max calmed down and NEVER gets too warm.

It’s not a hardware issue more like software during setup. The phone takes around a week to become “normal “ when you recover from backup

I was speeding it up by letting it run overnight and by indexing photos overnight but under normal conditions all the different heavyweight tasks will run at different times

my phone also overheated when charging for the first time and right out of the box

now one month later it’s cool at all times. No problems. Great battery life.

I just upgraded 4 phones in our family to Apple 15 Pro-max. When I charge it using a wall power socket the phone gets very hot and the i-phone turns the charging off, so it never gets to full charge but only about 75/80%. There is certainly a BIG problem with charging/power management, hardware or software both. Apple is playing a deceitful game here by not acknowledging the problem and acting as if all were fine. This problem must be addressed by Apple because denial or lies or blaming customer will not solve it. The problem is less severe when charging from a laptop socket. I did not have any such issue when charging my prior i-phone.

If my iPhone 15 is too hot to hold, it is overheating. Period.

So instead of telling us, what did Apple say when you showed it to them for testing? Surely, you did that??? Or are you more determined to make a complaint on a user to user only forum, where Apple doesn't participate and there is not one thing anyone here can do to help you.

Are the iPhones on display at the Apple Store "indexing all the new data?" They're in demo mode. I just went to the Apple Store near me to buy a new 15 Pro Max. I held every 15 Pro Max on display. They were all very hot. Sadly, I did not buy one. I really wanted to but not until they fix the issue. Please correct me if any of my assumptions are incorrect. Thank you.
