iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

Of course not. But then the display models have their screens continuously ON and people are using them all day long. Plus, they're on chargers all day. I would fully expect them to run warm. I don't recall a time when display units in the Apple Store weren't warm. And that includes the previous generations of iPhone.

All I can tell you is neither our 15 Pro or 15 Pro max EVER run hot. EVER. And we do use them.

I mentioned previously but wanted to again.

I had issues with my 15 pro max getting hot, never had the warning come on, but you could tell it was not normal. Mine did it most when talking on the phone for over 5 min.

About a week and half after activating it and getting it set up it was better. No heating up like it was when on a call, the battery is better, etc.

I know it has been mentioned - but anyone that uses a cell phone knows that at times it heats up - when charging, excessive use, etc. But I have never had any phone until this one have a problem with heating up to the point it is almost to hot to handle. But now it’s fine. Whether it was that the phone finally got all squared away after being set up or the software update did it - but it is working better than my 13 Pro Max that I had.

This is happening to me now. My battery keeps draining and it’s super annoying. I’ve tried everything even taking the case off completely and it still just over heats all the time. I live in wisconsin so it’s winter and cold right now outside so that’s not even the issue. (15 pro max)

What did they say at the Genius Bar, when you surely showed them your phone? And at a minimum, you surely are current with updates, right? This issue was addressed with iOS 17.0.3 and we are now on iOS 17.1.1

Hi All

My phone was heating up quite a lot while charging, you may refer to my earlier posts in this thread. However, just wanted to confirm that post 17.1 update, it has improved.

Y'day I got 17.1.1 update, and whilst updating I felt my phone got quite hot.

Today morning when I charged the phone again (post 17.1.1), it was not that hot as it used to be, so I am good for now and looks like it has improved (at least while charging) for me.

Best wishes to all of you!

I have been getting this warning every time I charge my iPhone 15 base model with 20 w charger, even on the replacement device, never happened with my iPhone 12 and 13.

That does not mean your phone is overheating. It's just telling you that Optimized Battery Charging is working and that it has stopped charging your phone until it the battery temperature drops some. Phones have done that since optimized battery charging was introduced but there was no message explaining what was going on. That meant people thought something was wrong with their phones because they weren't charging.

All batteries will get hotter while charging. To increase the overall life of the battery, you want to decrease that, hence, Optimized Battery Charging.

I’ve just finished a call. It lasted 7 minutes when I’ve figured out the phone is extremely hot. I am extra sensitive so it was unbearable to talk further.

The phone is brand new and bought in the US. If this is common I don’t think that replacing it will

do any good.

In my country I have only reseller stores (I style)

is there some answer from the #applesupport

It is disgraceful that this “high end” piece of tech is struggling with temperature.

This is honestly the most odd thing i have heard about optimised battery charging today :/
If you have used Apple products, you would know OBC has a separate notification, and this is coming for me even when OBC is off :(

Even when OBC is off, your phone stops charging, but instead of at 80%, it's at 100%. It then lets the battery cool and drain slightly. Again, that warning does not mean your phone is overheating. If your phone was overheating, you'd get a big error message on the screen telling you it was overheating and shutting down.

False, only time this would be right is if you had a phone that dates back to like 2010. I have both a 13 pro and a S23 Ultra, my S23 ultra didn't even get warm while fast charging with a 30w brick, watching a video on the highest setting possible and having the highest brightness on. My 13 pro doesn't just randomly warm up either.

This new iphone 15 promax is hot while it charges. Only iphone we possess that this has occurred with...But it charges relatively quickly and has not shut down as yet.

That would make sense, especially if you are fast charging the phone. The faster you feed power to a battery, the warmer it gets. It's physics.

Apple did say that when you get a new iPhone 15, for the first few days, while it's doing it's normal indexing and putting everything in place, you can fully expect it to run warmer than you may be accustomed to.

After a few days, it should run cooler and iOS 17.0.3 was specifically released to address the overheating issues some people experienced (but not all people did, like me, for example).

Purchased phone last week, It is getting hot even after 17.1.1 , even without usage, the charging stops with a msg “charging will start after phone lowers temperature “

That message means the phone is functioning as intended. iPhones have always stopped charging when they reach 100% to allow the battery to cool. What's new is the message that tells you what's happening. Also, if you're using optimized battery charging, they will stop at 80% before resuming.
