iPhone does not ring with incoming calls after updating to iOS 17

I am continuing to have issues with my phone not ringing when a call comes in. Ever had this issue until upgrading to IOS 17. I think it has ruined my phone.

FIRST: Are there missed calls in Phone/Recents on the phone? If they are not the problem is in the network, because the calls aren’t getting to your phone. Contact your carrier:

  • check with your carrier that they don’t have a local outage, and that you didn’t have any settings that would have immediately invoked voicemail, such as call forwarding.
  • check up on them at Down Detector - Crowdsourced outage checker

If they are in Recents here’s what to check:

  • Check the MUTE switch on the left side of the phone, above the volume buttons. It should be towards the screen
  • Check the volume setting. With the Home screen displayed, press the VOLUME UP button on the left side of the phone. It’s above the VOLUME DOWN button.
  • Go to Settings/Phone. There’s a switch for Silence Unknown Callers. If it is on any calls from numbers not in your contacts will go directly to voicemail.
    • If you keep it on, in Settings/Phone make sure Dial Assist is enabled; it is needed to accurately match an incoming call to a contact.
    • Remember that banks, doctors and other professionals may not call you from the same number that you have in your contacts for them.
  • Also in Settings/Phone: Make sure Call Forwarding is off.
  • Make sure Do Not Disturb is off:
    • Open the Control Center and turn off the button next to the word Focus.
  • Go to Settings/Sounds & Haptics. Make sure there is a sound assigned to Ringtone.
  • Go to Settings/Accessibility/Touch/Call Audio Routing and make sure Auto-Answer Calls is off.
  • Go to Settings/Screen Time/Communications Limits. Tap each of the 2 entries and make sure both are “Everyone"
  • Restart your phone-->Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  • If all else fails, talk your carrier into replacing your SIM card (thanks to ASC user DShelbyD)

Or maybe you need to troubleshoot the problem with YOUR PHONE, as it is not a problem with my phone and millions of other iPhones.

I have no idea what you consider ALL of the recommended troubleshooting, but rather than ask what you tried, does ALL include the following:

  • check with your carrier that they don’t have a local outage, and that you didn’t have any settings that would have immediately invoked voicemail, such as call forwarding.

  • Make sure Do Not Disturb is off:
    • Open the Control Center and turn off the button next to the word Focus.
    • If it doesn’t ring just when driving either go to Settings/Focus/Driving and delete it
  • Go to Settings/Sounds & Haptics.

It has to be software because my Apple Watch is not longer ringing on calls either. And it wasn't always like that only for the past few weeks.

That is totally illogical. All calls go to the phone. If they don’t ring on the phone they won’t ring on the watch. NO calls go to the watch; it just reflects what is on the phone. And it is not software. I will repeat how to troubleshoot this so you don’t have to scroll up to read the Best Reply:

I just tested and solved it myself. Try in Settings -> Phone -> Call Blocking & Identification, uncheck Business ID. This worked for me so hopefully it will too for you!

This design is clearly flawed in my opinion. From the description “Display verified business names and logos identified by [your mobile carrier]” it doesn’t suggest in any ways that this will actually BLOCK those callers, so when I was trying to solve the issue by changing different settings, this wasn’t even in my first couple of trials. It should say clearly in the text that this will send unidentified callers to mailbox automatically.

There is setting that I just discovered with the phone. This may be there before but I had never noticed it.

Settings -> Sounds & Haptics -> Under "Ringtone and Alerts" there is "Change With Buttons"

Check that this setting is enabled. On my phone it was disabled.

Second thing to check:

Under "Ringtone And Alerts" There is a volume control bar. Make sure that is also turned up.

You do not need to restart your phone.

So far on the first page I did not see the mention of these settings.

Apple can’t do anything about a problem with your cellular service provider. Here is how to troubleshoot “no ring” issues:

Most basic first: Have you checked the mute switch on the left side of the phone above the volume buttons, and adjusted the ring volume with the volume buttons while viewing the Home screen?

NEXT: Are there missed calls in Phone/Recents on the phone? If they are not the problem is in the network, because the calls aren’t getting to your phone. Contact your carrier:

  • check with your carrier that they don’t have a local outage, and that you didn’t have any settings that would have immediately invoked voicemail, such as call forwarding.
  • check up on them at Down Detector - Crowdsourced outage checker

If they are in Recents here’s what to check in addition:

  • Go to Settings/Phone. There’s a switch for Silence Unknown Callers. If it is on any calls from numbers not in your contacts will go directly to voicemail.
    • If you keep it on, in Settings/Phone make sure Dial Assist is enabled; it is needed to accurately match an incoming call to a contact.
    • Remember that banks, doctors and other professionals may not call you from the same number that you have in your contacts for them.
    • As some users have discovered, turning it on, then off sometimes helps.
  • Also in Settings/Phone: Make sure Call Forwarding is off.
  • Make sure Do Not Disturb is off:
    • iOS 14 & older: Go to Settings/Do not Disturb. Turn it off if it is on. Also turn off Scheduled. With both off none of the other switches there matter.
    • iOS 15: Go to Settings/Focus, and verify that all focus settings are disabled.
    • iOS 16: Open the Control Center and turn off the button next to the word Focus.

Check to make sure that you’re Focus settings aren’t set to Do Not Disturb or Sleep. This same thing happened to me—no idea how or why my phone settings got changed after the iOS update.

from the Home Screen, swipe down from top right diagonally to access Focus (see screenshot below). Turn off any all settings that disable incoming calls. Hope that helps.
