iPhone does not ring with incoming calls after updating to iOS 17

I am continuing to have issues with my phone not ringing when a call comes in. Ever had this issue until upgrading to IOS 17. I think it has ruined my phone.

FIRST: Are there missed calls in Phone/Recents on the phone? If they are not the problem is in the network, because the calls aren’t getting to your phone. Contact your carrier:

  • check with your carrier that they don’t have a local outage, and that you didn’t have any settings that would have immediately invoked voicemail, such as call forwarding.
  • check up on them at Down Detector - Crowdsourced outage checker

If they are in Recents here’s what to check:

  • Check the MUTE switch on the left side of the phone, above the volume buttons. It should be towards the screen
  • Check the volume setting. With the Home screen displayed, press the VOLUME UP button on the left side of the phone. It’s above the VOLUME DOWN button.
  • Go to Settings/Phone. There’s a switch for Silence Unknown Callers. If it is on any calls from numbers not in your contacts will go directly to voicemail.
    • If you keep it on, in Settings/Phone make sure Dial Assist is enabled; it is needed to accurately match an incoming call to a contact.
    • Remember that banks, doctors and other professionals may not call you from the same number that you have in your contacts for them.
  • Also in Settings/Phone: Make sure Call Forwarding is off.
  • Make sure Do Not Disturb is off:
    • Open the Control Center and turn off the button next to the word Focus.
  • Go to Settings/Sounds & Haptics. Make sure there is a sound assigned to Ringtone.
  • Go to Settings/Accessibility/Touch/Call Audio Routing and make sure Auto-Answer Calls is off.
  • Go to Settings/Screen Time/Communications Limits. Tap each of the 2 entries and make sure both are “Everyone"
  • Restart your phone-->Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  • If all else fails, talk your carrier into replacing your SIM card (thanks to ASC user DShelbyD)

I have followed the suggested steps to get it to ring. It’s a very $$$ non functional brick. Some texts don’t ring either. Especially from my boss, I’ve changed the text tones and the ring tones too!

To say that I’m disappointed in this iPhone 15 pro max is an understatement.

The only calls that come through are those that rang before I got a new phone and updated to ios17.

Come on Apple Fix this!!!

Those of us that have or had the issue know it's not a a problem with our carriers or the phone hardware as we have seen this issue across multiple devices and carriers.

We also know Lawrence isn't going to assist in anyway because he has very little understanding. The fact that it didn't know that an Apple will ring when someone calls your phone shows how little understanding he has of the Apple ecosystem.

In all the years I've had an iPhone and Apple watch I have never encountered this problem until end of November or early December when there was a system update for my phone. I know it happened then because whatever update it was bricked my phone and I had to use my PC to restore it.

I believe mine has been working since I followed someone's recommendation in this thread. It may have been the call blocking toggle from chujie17. I have multiple phones/phone lines so I can't delete other iCloud backups of other phones to try and fix the issue.

This reminds of Antenna Gate from years ago with the iPhone 4 when a poorly designed iPhone antenna was causing dropped calls and Apple blamed customers for holding it wrong instead admitting the design flaw.

Don't count on them admitting any fault or any of the call center reps in the forums to actually help either.

Well, what do we have here? An article in Macworld discussing the iPhone not ringing on incoming calls. Obviously this is an issue.

Yes! Did you actually READ the article? It provides exactly the same advice in my post above!!!! They probably even copied it from my post! Is that plagiarism?

Thank you for re-affirming the legitimacy of what I posted.

Now that is a reply I can agree with. Something in the update changed something. I still think Apple needs to identify what in their update changed things. I had an issue with a Brand New Out of the box phone yesterday that when the data was carried over from the old phone the new one began to announce call names. Never had that setting on and also it began to vibrate when ringing. Never used that setting. So there is something in Apples software that is making changes and as stated Apple needs to work on a fix. How, When or why is their problem. They are product providers for the public.

Edit to say you might have meant it's just not making the sound-- but UGH, I'm just so done. I'm here because I'm trying to find a solution, but I feel like it's absolutely futile. There are no real solutions anywhere that I can see.

I've spoken to apple support twice about this issue, and also my phone provider twice... None of their suggestions fixed it. Everyone's convinced it's some setting in my phone- It's not. I've changed everything I can change. I've done the settings reset. I even switched from a sim card to an esim, it made no difference. The network resets when I make a change & it lets me get a call in, but then a day after that it starts doing the same thing!!

It has been like this for MONTHS.

99% of the time I do not receive any incoming calls. A small percentage of the time, I also cannot make outgoing calls or send text messages.

This all happens whether I'm on my cellular data, or a WiFi network.

It's not consistent, once in a while a call will come through- But as I said, 99% of the time, they do not.

I cannot rely on this phone to get calls. When it decides no calls will come through- It does not even show in my missing calls, and I've been told by the people trying to call that my phone goes straight to voicemail, and does not ring at all. I have missed so many calls because of this. Many important, like doctors.

I don't even know why I have a phone at this point. I'm switching to android as soon as I'm able- I'm very tired of this... 🙃

pretty interesting that in that huge list that Lawerence gave of possible fixes he DID NOT list the actual fix.
was the business block not really a fix option or was the list just slight of hand?

The phone not ringing is a symptom. It has numerous different causes. The same solution isn't going to work for everyone. Lawrence took the trouble to provide quite a lot of possibilities. It's up to the user to see which one might apply in their individual circumstances.

I also know that a polite suggestion that Lawrence add that item to his list would have been well received.

"Slight of hand" generally refers to a magic trick. It's not clear what you mean when you used it here.
